The best ACH processor depends on how you collect payments, your typical invoice size, and whether you already use an accounting or ecommerce platform. For broad collection methods and larger invoices, consider Helcim; for QuickBooks invoice workflows, QuickBooks Payments; for occasional ACH invoices in Square, Square; and for eligible PayPal Online Payment Services checkouts, PayPal. Stripe and GoCardless may suit configurable online or recurring bank-payment flows, but the pricing figures available here come from a third-party comparison and should be confirmed with each provider before signing up.
ACH transfers move money between bank accounts, but they are not instant, and a quoted processing percentage is only part of the cost. Caps, minimums, returns, software subscriptions, and the exact collection method can change which option is economical. The comparisons below are U.S.-focused; prices and feature availability can change.
At a glance: six ACH processors and their best-fit workflows
| Provider | Best fit | Published fee evidence | Important scope or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helcim | Businesses wanting several ways to collect ACH, including invoices, ecommerce checkout, recurring billing, virtual terminal, and payment requests. | 0.5% + $0.25 per ACH/EFT-PAD transaction, capped at $6 for payments up to $25,000; above $25,000, an additional 0.05% applies to the excess. | Helcim says typical ACH deposits take 3–4 business days. Pricing applies to U.S. and Canadian merchants. |
| Stripe | Businesses building configurable online checkout flows or platform payment experiences. | Fit Small Business reported ACH debit at 0.8%, capped at $5, ACH credit at $1 per payment, and a $4 reject/failure fee. | These are secondary-source figures from Fit Small Business, published August 5, 2026—not verified here against Stripe’s current official terms. The outlet reported four business days for standard settlement. |
| QuickBooks Payments | Businesses already using QuickBooks that want ACH invoice payments or quick requests reflected in their accounting workflow. | 1% for ACH payments on invoices or quick requests; QuickBooks said its displayed rates were accurate on September 18, 2026. | Include the cost of any required paid QuickBooks software plan in the comparison. |
| GoCardless | Businesses looking for standalone or recurring bank-debit collection. | Fit Small Business reported fees starting at 0.5% + $0.05, capped at $5. | The figure is secondary-source reporting from August 5, 2026 and was not verified against current official GoCardless terms here. |
| Square | Square users who occasionally send invoices payable by bank transfer. | 1% with a $1 minimum for ACH bank transfers on invoices. | The cited ACH option is for invoices only. Square Free has no monthly subscription fee before processing costs. |
| PayPal | Businesses that want ACH available within an existing eligible PayPal Online Payment Services checkout flow. | 0.80%, capped at $5 per transaction for ACH Services. | This fee is for PayPal Online Payment Services in the U.S. fee table, not necessarily every PayPal product; eligibility and agreement terms apply. |
Provider pages and product definitions are not perfectly comparable. For example, Square’s stated ACH rate applies to invoices, while PayPal’s cited rate is tied to a specific online-payments service. Fit Small Business’s Stripe and GoCardless figures are useful comparison points, but confirm current pricing directly with those providers before relying on them.
How to choose the right ACH processor
Match the collection method to how customers pay
Start with the payment flow rather than the provider’s headline rate. Sending an invoice that a customer pays from a bank account differs from embedding ACH in ecommerce checkout, collecting a recurring debit, or accepting an ACH credit. Helcim lists a broad set of collection methods. Square’s cited ACH feature is invoice-based; QuickBooks Payments’ quoted rate is for invoices or quick requests; PayPal’s cited fee is for its Online Payment Services; and Stripe and GoCardless may be worth assessing for configurable online or recurring flows, subject to confirming current terms and features.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- For invoices and payment requests, compare the steps required for your customer and how payments reconcile in your books.
- For online checkout, confirm that the provider supports the exact checkout or platform integration you need.
- For recurring debits, verify authorization, scheduling, customer notifications, and failure handling before committing.
- For ACH credits, confirm whether the provider is processing incoming bank payments or merely offering a different transfer workflow.
Calculate the fee using your actual transaction sizes
A cap can make a percentage rate less expensive on larger payments, while a minimum can weigh heavily on small invoices. Compare the fee on a representative small, typical, and large transaction, then multiply by expected monthly payment count. Include any reject or return charge, verification fees, billing add-ons, faster-funding fees, and required software subscription. The listed pricing alone does not establish every possible cost.
For instance, Helcim’s stated $6 cap applies up to $25,000, with a separate 0.05% charge on the amount above that threshold. Square’s $1 minimum means a small invoice may incur more than 1% in effective processing cost. These mechanics matter more than a simple ranking by percentage.
Value accounting and operational fit
QuickBooks Payments may reduce reconciliation friction for a business already working in QuickBooks, but the full comparison should include any paid QuickBooks plan needed for that workflow. Square’s no-monthly-subscription Free plan can be attractive for existing Square users, but its cited ACH collection method is limited to invoices. A low transaction rate is not necessarily the lowest total cost if it requires another subscription or creates manual bookkeeping work.

Plan for settlement and payment failures
ACH is not an immediate funding method. Helcim reports typical deposits in 3–4 business days; Fit Small Business reports four business days for Stripe standard settlement and says ACH receipt commonly takes 2–5 business days overall. These are estimates, not guarantees: verification, account history, provider payout schedules, weekends, and bank timing can affect availability. If cash timing is critical, ask the provider about eligibility and the cost of faster funding before choosing.

Helcim: broad collection tools and larger invoices
Helcim is a strong candidate when you need more than one ACH collection channel. Its ACH page describes bank-transfer processing and lists invoice, ecommerce checkout, recurring billing, virtual terminal, and payment-request options. The pricing page lists 0.5% + $0.25 per transaction, capped at $6 for payments up to $25,000, with an additional 0.05% on the excess above $25,000. Helcim says typical ACH deposits take 3–4 business days. See Helcim’s ACH payment processing details and pricing.
This may suit service businesses with larger invoices or businesses needing recurring and online collection options. Confirm the exact rate treatment for your transaction sizes and market, especially for payments above the stated threshold.

Stripe: configurable online flows, with pricing to verify
Fit Small Business’s August 5, 2026 comparison reports Stripe ACH debit at 0.8%, capped at $5; ACH credit at $1 per payment; and a $4 reject or failure fee. It also reports four business days for standard settlement. The comparison describes Stripe as configurable for custom checkout and platforms, while noting technical complexity and possible billing add-on costs. These pricing figures are secondary-source reporting, so check Stripe’s current official pricing and terms before using them in a budget. The comparison is available at Fit Small Business’s ACH processor comparison.
Stripe is worth considering when the business needs a tailored online payment flow and has the technical resources to configure it. Factor in potential billing-related add-ons and payment failures rather than treating the reported debit rate as the complete cost.

QuickBooks lists a 1% fee for ACH bank payments made on invoices or quick requests. Its rates page states that the displayed rates were accurate as of September 18, 2026. For businesses already using QuickBooks, keeping customer payments connected to the accounting workflow may simplify reconciliation. Check the QuickBooks Payments rates and include the cost of the accounting software plan your business needs.

- USB interface, keyboard emulation, no need to install software to read, configuration software for changing settings available.

This is a workflow-led choice rather than an automatic low-cost choice: a subscription can change the total expense, and the cited 1% rate is specifically for invoice or quick-request payments.
GoCardless: recurring bank collection, with price confirmation needed
Fit Small Business reports GoCardless pricing starting at 0.5% + $0.05, capped at $5, and describes recurring debit options. Those are secondary-source figures published August 5, 2026; they were not verified against current official GoCardless terms here. Review the comparison at Fit Small Business, then confirm the price, supported collection flows, and failure or return costs directly with GoCardless.
Its reported recurring-debit focus may fit businesses that collect scheduled payments, but do not choose on the reported rate alone until the provider confirms the current agreement and applicable fees.

Square: occasional ACH payments through invoices
Square lists ACH bank transfers at 1% with a $1 minimum for invoices only. Square Free has no monthly subscription fee before processing costs. Check Square’s merchant services pricing and its pricing page.
Square is most relevant when your business already uses Square and an invoice is an acceptable way to collect bank payments. The cited ACH feature does not establish ACH availability for every Square checkout or in-person workflow.
PayPal: ACH in a specific online-payments product
PayPal’s U.S. business fee table lists ACH Services at 0.80%, capped at $5 per transaction, under PayPal Online Payment Services. This should not be read as the price for every PayPal product or account. Eligibility and agreement terms apply. See PayPal’s U.S. business fees.
PayPal may be convenient when the business already accepts payments through an eligible PayPal online checkout. Confirm that your product, customer flow, and account qualify for this ACH fee before comparing it with invoice processors.
Is ACH cheaper than credit-card processing?
It can be, but the answer depends on your processor’s card and ACH pricing, average payment size, and extra costs. The cited options include percentage fees with caps, a fee with a minimum, and fixed fees for different ACH payment types. Returns, failures, billing features, and subscriptions can also affect total cost. Compare the same payment amount and workflow across payment methods rather than assuming that a bank transfer is always cheaper.
How to compare total cost before signing up
- Write down your use case. Specify whether you need customer invoices, ecommerce checkout, recurring debit, ACH credit, or vendor bill payment.
- Estimate payment profile. Use your typical invoice size, number of monthly payments, and expected range of small and large transactions.
- Apply each fee rule. Account for percentages, fixed charges, minimums, caps, and any surcharge on amounts above a threshold.
- Add operating costs. Include accounting subscriptions, billing add-ons, verification charges, rejection or return fees, and faster-funding options that you expect to use.
- Confirm timing and eligibility. Ask what settlement estimate applies to your account, what verification is required, and whether the desired ACH product is available for your payment flow.
- Check current terms directly. Provider pricing can change; confirm official pricing and contract terms, especially where the figures above are reported by a third-party comparison.
Where Melio fits—and where it does not
Melio is primarily relevant to business payables and bill management, not as a like-for-like substitute for a processor focused on collecting customer ACH payments. Its pricing page describes plan tiers with monthly ACH allowances, QuickBooks/Xero syncing, invoice creation, payment links, and AP controls. Its vendor-authored overview discusses paying vendors by card while vendors may receive payment through ACH. Review Melio pricing and its ACH overview if paying vendors or managing bills is part of the problem. Treat any invoice or receivables capability as a separate workflow to verify against your needs.
