Bill Gates’s $200 Billion Giving Plan: What It Means and Where the Money Will Go

Bill Gates’s pledge is a 20-year foundation spending plan, not an immediate $200 billion transfer. Learn how the estimate works, where funding is intended to go, and when the foundation plans to close.

Bill Gates did not promise to transfer $200 billion in cash immediately. In May 2025, he said he would give virtually all his wealth to the Gates Foundation over 20 years, while the foundation projected that it would spend more than $200 billion by 2045. That projection includes the foundation’s endowment and Gates’s future contributions, and its eventual total depends on markets and inflation.

What did Bill Gates announce?

On May 8, 2025, Gates said he would give virtually all his wealth through the Gates Foundation over the following 20 years. The foundation announced that it expected to spend more than $200 billion between 2025 and 2045. Gates wrote that the precise amount would depend on markets and inflation; the estimate includes both the foundation’s endowment and his future contributions. It is therefore a projected total of foundation spending, not a guaranteed fixed sum Gates had already transferred. The foundation’s announcement and Gates’s statement describe the commitment.

The foundation said its board changed its charter to set a permanent closure date of December 31, 2045. The previous charter set the sunset 20 years after Gates’s death; the new timetable gives the foundation a fixed endpoint.

How much has the foundation given, and how much is planned?

The foundation reports that it gave away more than $100 billion from 2000 through 2025 and plans to give away about twice that amount from 2025 through 2045. These are the foundation’s reported figures. The later figure is a forward-looking estimate, not a fixed cash balance or a guarantee of how much will be spent regardless of economic conditions. The foundation’s 2026 annual letter and its FAQ provide the historical figure and context.

Where will the money go?

Global health

The foundation’s January 2026 budget announcement says its board approved an annual payout of $9 billion and that about 70% of its 2026 budget supports global health. The foundation’s stated goals include preventing deaths of mothers, babies, and children from preventable causes, and helping the next generation grow up free of deadly infectious diseases. Its priorities include maternal and child health, nutrition, and infectious disease. The foundation’s budget announcement gives the payout and allocation figures.

Africa

Gates said the majority of the planned $200 billion in spending would go to Africa, with an emphasis on working with governments that prioritize health and well-being. The cited announcement does not specify a percentage or provide a country-by-country breakdown. The foundation’s June 2025 announcement reports his statement.

U.S. education and agriculture

The foundation says the remaining budget largely focuses on education in the United States and agriculture in low- and middle-income countries. Its broader stated aim is to help hundreds of millions of people break free of poverty. The annual letter describes the foundation’s approach as supporting or testing solutions, then working with governments, businesses, and communities to extend them. Those are the foundation’s priorities and intended approach, not a guarantee that the targets will be achieved.

What does the 2026 payout figure mean?

The $9 billion figure is the annual payout approved by the board in the foundation’s January 2026 announcement. It is distinct from the more-than-$200-billion projection for total spending across two decades. The foundation also said about 70% of its 2026 budget is allocated to global health; that percentage describes the budget, not the full 20-year plan or a fixed share of every future year’s spending.

Why set a 2045 closing date?

Gates said 20 years struck a balance between giving the foundation time to make progress and giving people notice that its funding would eventually end. The Associated Press quoted philanthropy expert Rhodri Davies saying the announcement could reflect a shift in norms away from foundations operating indefinitely. That is Davies’s interpretation, not proof of an industry-wide change. The Associated Press report covered the announcement and his comment.

What happens to grants and funded work?

The foundation says charitable funding to organizations, including private-sector organizations, comes with global-access requirements intended to make knowledge gained publicly available and funded products affordable and accessible. That is the foundation’s own description of its policy, rather than an independent assessment of how every grant is implemented. Its FAQ explains the policy.
