A separate promotion is running in the United States in 2026. Its official rules say no purchase is necessary and buying does not improve your chances.
What is McMillion$ about?
McMillion$ is a six-part documentary series about the historical fraud involving McDonald’s promotional games. HBO’s listing describes $24 million stolen from the game during the 1990s; Bell Media describes the fraud period as 1989–2001. Those descriptions refer to the documentary’s subject and should not be confused with the narrower amount the Department of Justice said was corruptly claimed as grand prizes.
CBS covered the series on February 4, 2020, identifying James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte as its directors. The report says the series includes interviews with FBI agents, McDonald’s employees, and game winners. Hernandez described the case as involving many people over more than a decade, adding that investigators eventually learned of it when somebody talked. That is the director’s interview comment, not a court finding.
How did the McDonald’s Monopoly scam work?
In an August 21, 2001 arrest announcement, the Department of Justice alleged that a Simon Marketing employee diverted winning game pieces before they reached the public. The government said recruiters then found people to submit those pieces and falsely claim the prizes. The announcement identified Jerome Jacobson, who worked in Simon Marketing’s security department, as an alleged distributor of winning pieces to friends and associates.

A 2004 Eleventh Circuit opinion provides later court context: McDonald’s had contracted Simon Marketing to develop, manage, and advertise its promotional games, and Jacobson was Simon’s Director of Security, responsible for disseminating high-value game stamps. The opinion discusses allegations that stolen stamps went to recruiters, who arranged for others to claim the prize money. These descriptions explain the case; they do not mean that McDonald’s employees generally were involved or establish the guilt of everyone charged.
The DOJ said more than $13 million in grand prizes had been corruptly “won” by co-conspirators. The $24 million figure used in descriptions of McMillion$ is a separate measure of the fraud’s scale; the two figures are not interchangeable.

How is the 2026 game different from the historical case?

The historical scandal is not evidence that the 2026 promotion is rigged. The current rules are a separate set of terms for a new U.S. promotion.
Is McDonald’s Monopoly back?
Yes. The official rules identify McDonald’s USA, LLC as sponsor and cover the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The game period runs from October 6 through November 1, 2026, while game pieces last. Codes may be entered and prizes claimed through November 22; the Chance Card game ends November 8.

To participate, a person must be at least 18 and meet the rules’ app, Rewards, and game-registration requirements. The promotion uses game pieces and codes through the app; the deadlines differ by activity, so check the official rules for the terms that apply to a particular entry or prize.
Do you have to buy something to play?
No. Under the 2026 rules, a participant can obtain a game piece by buying an eligible item while specially marked supplies last, or use the specified mail-in request process. The rules say that no purchase is necessary and that a purchase will not improve the chance of winning. The mail-in route has specific envelope, date, and quantity requirements, so consult the full official rules rather than relying on an abbreviated description.

What are the odds of winning McDonald’s Monopoly?
At the outset of the 2026 game, the official rules state overall odds of winning an instant-win prize of 1 in 5, based on planned game-piece distribution. Most instant-win prizes are food. This is an overall starting figure, not the odds for every individual prize or a guarantee: the rules warn that prize counts diminish as prizes are claimed, so the odds change during the promotion.
