Renting a private jet in the U.S. has no single standard price: the aircraft’s flight time is only one part of the bill. A trip quote may also include empty positioning legs, airport fees, fuel or crew charges, taxes, and optional services. The most reliable way to budget is to compare written, itemized quotes for the same route, dates, aircraft needs, and schedule.
1. Aircraft and flight time
The aircraft class and the billable flight time are usually the largest starting points. UpLeg’s 2026 guide reports these typical U.S. aircraft-only hourly observations; they are estimates, not guaranteed offers or all-in trip prices:

These are UpLeg’s 2026 typical U.S. figures, based on its review of public rate cards. The guide cautions that individual aircraft can cost more or less than the class observation, and other charges may be added. Choose the smallest aircraft that can safely and comfortably meet the trip’s passenger, luggage, and range requirements. A larger cabin can raise the hourly rate without being useful for a short trip with a small group.

2. Positioning or ferry legs
If the aircraft is not already at your departure airport, the operator may need to fly it there empty. An empty repositioning leg after your flight may also be billable, depending on the operator’s schedule and aircraft availability. Ask how many positioning hours are included in the quote and whether the operator expects to bill any empty leg at the charter rate.
A GSA-listed operator, Executive Fliteways, states that positioning hours from its Islip, New York base are added at the applicable charter hourly rate. That is a contract-specific example, not a universal rule or fee. Its GSA price list also illustrates that operators may itemize charges separately.
3. Airport and handling charges
Landing, parking, ramp, and terminal handling fees depend on the airports, aircraft, and length of stay. The Executive Fliteways GSA price list gives examples of $20–$1,200 per landing and $20–$2,500 per parking period for that listed service. Those ranges are specific to its contract and should not be treated as standard consumer rates.

Ask for the departure and destination airport charges separately, and check whether parking is charged for each airport or each period the aircraft remains on the ground.

4. Fuel and crew costs
Fuel surcharges can vary with market conditions and aircraft size. Crew standby or overnight expenses may apply if the itinerary requires the crew to remain away or runs across duty days. The Executive Fliteways GSA schedule lists $400 per crew member for a domestic overnight or standby charge and says aircraft standby applies when a trip exceeds one 14-hour crew duty day. These are terms of that service, not standard prices for every charter.
Ask the operator to state the itinerary and duty-day assumptions behind the quote, including whether a delay or overnight stay could change the crew or aircraft charges.

5. Taxes and optional services
The IRS says that a 7.5% tax applies to amounts paid for taxable transportation of persons by air. Its Publication 510 (12/2025) says taxable amounts include charges for layover or waiting time and movement of aircraft in deadhead service. Domestic-segment tax is a separate passenger-based component, generally adjusted annually for inflation; ask the operator to show the tax calculation for your itinerary rather than assuming the 7.5% percentage is the only tax line.
Catering, ground transportation, and other requested services may be additional. Confirm in writing which services are included and which will be billed separately.
How to compare charter quotes
A low hourly rate does not necessarily mean a lower trip total. Request quotes for the same route, dates, passenger count, luggage, aircraft class, schedule, and overnight plan, then compare the complete totals and assumptions.

- Flight hours and hourly rate
- Positioning or ferry time, including any minimum daily hours
- Airport landing, parking, ramp, and handling charges
- Fuel surcharge
- Crew standby or overnight costs
- Catering, ground transportation, and other requested services
- Taxes and the basis for their calculation
- Cancellation, schedule-change, and other change terms
The GSA price list shows how individual charges can be itemized; your operator’s written quote and contract determine the charges for your trip.
Check the operator and charter terms
Price is only one part of the decision. The Federal Aviation Administration advises consumers to ask to see the operator’s Air Carrier or Operating Certificate to verify that the aircraft is authorized for charter use. It also warns that a missing federal excise tax charge can be a red flag. Review the FAA’s Safe Charter Operations guidance before booking.
Confirm who is operating the flight and what type of charter you are buying. The U.S. Department of Transportation says public-charter sales materials, including price quotes, must name the airline operating the flight. DOT also describes refund and major-change protections for public charters; these may not describe every charter arrangement. Read the agreement’s actual cancellation and change terms, and consult DOT’s Charter Flights guidance.
