Nonprofits can strengthen fundraising by making recurring gifts easier to start, improving donor retention, accommodating donor-advised fund grants, diversifying revenue sources, and measuring results consistently. These approaches address different needs; sector data can inform decisions, but it cannot guarantee that a particular organization will raise more.
1. Make recurring giving easy to choose—and retain recurring donors
Recurring gifts can make revenue more predictable, but the opportunity is not only about signing up new monthly donors. GivingTuesday’s 2026 analysis of Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP) transaction data found that donors on recurring schedules grew from 6.6% in 2021 to 7.9% in 2025. Most of that growth came from retaining existing recurring donors; the median organization acquired effectively zero new recurring donors in each year analyzed. Make a recurring option visible alongside one-time giving, explain how the gift supports the organization, and ensure donors can understand how to manage or change their commitment. Retention deserves equal attention: recurring revenue depends on donors continuing their gifts, not just enrolling. Track new recurring donors separately from existing recurring donors who remain active so the two outcomes are not conflated.
2. Prioritize donor retention and re-engagement
Acquiring gifts is only one part of fundraising performance. Reviewing who continues to give, who stops, and whether lapsed donors return can help a development team identify where relationships are weakening and where its efforts may be working. The Association of Fundraising Professionals describes FEP as providing quarterly and yearly gain/loss statistics and giving-performance measurement tools for nonprofits. AFP’s overview of FEP

Use those measures to review results by reporting period and donor cohort—for example, comparing donors who first gave in different years—rather than relying on a single organization-wide total. That makes it easier to distinguish a change in the number of donors from a change in gift size or repeat giving. 3. Make donor-advised fund grants straightforward
Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are a meaningful channel to account for in fundraising planning. A DAF account holder may recommend a grant to a nonprofit through the sponsoring program, so the process and information donors need can differ from making a gift directly on an organization’s donation page.

The DAF Research Collaborative’s 2024 National Study draws on nine years of activity from more than 50,000 accounts at 111 participating DAF programs. Its scope includes more than 600,000 inbound contributions and over 2.25 million outbound grants. Make it easy for donors to find the organization’s legal name and other identifying information they may need to recommend a grant. Explain how to notify the nonprofit about a recommended grant and how the organization acknowledges it when received. Clear instructions can reduce avoidable confusion without implying that a grant recommendation is the same as a completed donation.

4. Build a funding mix that fits the organization
A nonprofit’s best revenue mix depends on its mission, donor community, capacity, and funding requirements. National giving data can provide context, but it is not a template for how any one organization should divide its fundraising effort.
Giving USA’s 2025 report, as reported by the Associated Press, put U.S. charitable giving in 2024 at $592.5 billion, a 3.3% increase after inflation adjustment. The reported sources were individuals (66%), foundations (19%), bequests (8%), and corporations (7%). These are national shares of giving, not recommended targets for an individual nonprofit. Use the categories as prompts to assess fit: individual gifts may support broad donor participation; foundation grants may align with defined programs or priorities; bequests concern long-term legacy giving; and corporate contributions may depend on organizational and mission fit. Before pursuing a channel, weigh its likely timing and predictability, relationship-building needs, staff and technology effort, accessibility to donors, and whether your team can measure outcomes with the data it has.

Fundraising decisions are more useful when teams can see what changed and when. FEP provides growth-in-giving measures and tools that organizations can use to assess performance over time. A practical measurement plan can include:
- Donor retention: whether donors who gave in an earlier period give again in the period being reviewed.
- Recurring giving: new recurring donors and continuing recurring donors, tracked separately.
- Revenue by source: amounts from individual giving, grants, bequests, corporate contributions, and other relevant channels.
- Reporting period and cohort: the time window and donor group behind each figure, so comparisons remain meaningful.
Use the results to decide what to continue, adjust, or investigate. A measurement tool can describe performance; the figures alone do not prove that a particular tactic caused a change. Interpret them alongside operational context, and avoid treating a national benchmark as a promise of local results.
How to choose which strategy to start with
There is no head-to-head evidence establishing one of these approaches as best for every nonprofit. Start with the question that matters most to your organization and the information you can reliably collect:
