There is no universal heat scale, so this guide uses broad reader-facing categories: plot-first, story-and-sex balance, and erotica-forward. The labels describe emphasis, not a guarantee of how any reader will experience a book.
How to choose a smut book
Start with the kind of reading experience you want, rather than relying on a single “spice” score. Marie Claire’s 2025 erotic-novel list uses mild, medium, and hot as editorial categories reflecting different balances of plot and sex; those labels are not an industry-wide rating system. Its recommendations include Julia Quinn’s The Duke and I and Evie Dunmore’s Bringing Down the Duke in the mild-spice section. Marie Claire’s list is a useful example of one approach, not a definitive ranking.
- Plot-first: Choose a romance where the relationship and external story are central, and explicit content is not the only draw.
- Story and sex in balance: Look for erotic romance that gives substantial attention to both the relationship and sexual content.
- Erotica-forward: Short-story collections or erotica may suit you when sexual content is a central part of the reading experience.
Retailer descriptions and editorial labels do not always provide detailed content notes. Check the book description and any available content guidance if particular themes are a concern.
Books to consider by reading style
| Book | Best fit | What the source establishes | Edition or buying route |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Duke and I by Julia Quinn | Plot-first historical romance | Marie Claire places it in its mild-spice section; that is an editorial classification, not a standardized rating. | Check the retailer listing for the edition available in your country. |
| Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore | Plot-first historical romance | Also placed in Marie Claire’s mild-spice section. | Check the retailer listing for the edition available in your country. |

| Scandalized by Lauren Billings, writing as Ivy Owens | Contemporary romance with suspense and high chemistry | Hachette UK describes the book and hosts an endorsement from bestselling author Rosie Danan: “Scandalized is the definition of spicy – bursting with tension and teasing, banter and blistering chemistry”. This is publisher-hosted praise, not an independent review. | The accessed publisher page does not establish live price or all available formats. Check Hachette UK’s book page. |
What to check before you buy
Confirm the format and edition
A publisher page may list a paperback, trade paperback, or ebook, while a retailer may carry only some formats. For example, Simon & Schuster lists both trade paperback and ebook for Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 7, while the PRH pages for Bared to You and Pucking Around list paperback editions. Open the destination retailer’s listing and confirm the format, ISBN when shown, and territory before ordering.

Look for the relationship setup you want
When a dependable description identifies a relationship configuration, use it to narrow your choice: PRH calls Pucking Around poly and “why choose,” while its kinky-romance selection includes Bared to You. Do not infer representation or relationship dynamics from a title or cover alone.
Use heat labels cautiously
“Mild,” “medium,” and “hot” are useful shorthand only when you know whose labels they are and what they mean. The Marie Claire categories describe its editorial judgment about the balance of plot and sex; they should not be treated as a consistent scale across publishers, authors, or retailers.
Compare retailer listings, not just book titles
Inventory, format, and price can change by retailer and region. Bookshop.org’s Romance – Erotica category displays paperback listings and says its model supports independent bookstores, but an individual title’s availability can change. Publisher pages can help identify an edition; the retailer page is where to verify what is currently offered.
