American Airlines no longer operates Airbus A330s. It retired the fleet in 2020 and disclosed in 2024 that it had entered an agreement to sell its remaining A330 aircraft. The airline’s 2026 fleet disclosure lists Boeing 777s and 787s as its mainline widebody families, not the A330. Public company disclosures do not identify the buyers or the later history of each aircraft, so their individual destinations are not confirmed.
What happened to American Airlines’ A330s?
American announced in 2020 that it was accelerating the retirement of its A330-300s amid record-low demand. The airline said it had nine A330-300s in its fleet as of January 1, 2020, and that they flew mainly on trans-Atlantic routes, with some domestic service. That figure applies to the A330-300s at that date; it should not be read as a count of every A330 variant American had operated over its history. American Airlines’ 2020 announcement
In 2024, American Airlines Group reported that it had entered into a sales agreement for its remaining Airbus A330 aircraft. The agreement resulted in a $42 million gain, according to the company’s annual filing. The filing does not name the buyers, list aircraft registrations, give delivery dates, or describe what happened to the aircraft afterward. American Airlines Group’s 2024 annual filing
Why did American retire the A330?
American said the retirements would reduce the number of aircraft types it operated and bring forward savings and efficiencies. The airline also cited training efficiency and streamlined maintenance. These are the company’s stated reasons for the fleet changes, not an independent assessment of their effects. American Airlines’ 2020 announcement

- FUN AVIATION GIFT & DESK DECORATION — A unique gift for aviation fans, aerospace enthusiasts, teenagers, adults, or anyone who enjoys unusual aircraft. Does American still fly the A330?
No A330 subfleet appears in American’s 2026-1 financing disclosure. Its mainline widebody families are Boeing 777s and 787s; its listed narrowbody families include Boeing 737s and Airbus A320-family aircraft. The disclosure also notes the retirement of several mainline and regional subfleets. American’s 2026-1 fleet disclosure
Where are the former aircraft now?
The available company disclosures establish that American retired the fleet and agreed to sell its remaining A330s, but they do not establish where each aircraft is today. They do not identify an aircraft-by-aircraft buyer, current operator, storage location, or scrapping status. Without registrations or another source tracing specific airframes, a more precise destination would be speculative.

The A330-300 was the variant singled out in American’s 2020 retirement announcement. Airbus describes the A330-200 as the shorter-fuselage version, designed for greater range than the -300. The distinction matters when interpreting American’s nine-aircraft figure: it refers specifically to A330-300s in the fleet on January 1, 2020, while the 2024 filing refers more broadly to the remaining A330 aircraft.
