PILOT’s B2P Ball Plus is one documented example with both: the manufacturer says it is refillable and contains more than 85% recycled plastic by total product weight. That specification does not establish that it has the lowest overall environmental impact.
What makes a pen a more responsible choice?
“Eco-friendly” is not a single measurable feature. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends choosing refillable products and products made with recycled materials as waste-reduction choices. It also advises consumers to read package labels for recycled-content information. These are useful criteria, but they do not amount to a comparative life-cycle assessment of particular pens.
- Refillability: A refillable pen can reduce the need to replace the whole pen when its ink runs out. Check the exact refill code and whether replacement refills are available where you shop.
- Recycled content: Check the percentage and what it measures. A share of the complete pen’s weight is not directly comparable to a claim covering only selected components.
The two features are independent: a pen may be refillable, contain recycled material, both or neither. The EPA’s consumer guidance supports both choices, while its procurement guidance identifies refillable pens as durable products that can reduce waste and disposal impacts (EPA consumer guidance; EPA procurement guidance).
Documented pen options
The available product specifications support comparison of these PILOT examples, not a controlled test across brands. Specifications and product names can vary by market, so confirm the exact item and package before buying.

Product specifications are from PILOT Europe; check the current listing for the precise model and refill. The “up to 10 times” figure is PILOT’s stated limit for its V5 cartridge system, not a guarantee for every pen or every use.
How to choose the right pen for your use
1. Start with the writing format
Choose the format you will actually use. The B2P Ball Plus is a ballpoint; the V5 cartridge system is a liquid-ink option. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of smoothness, drying time, leakage or writing performance, so choose based on your own needs rather than assuming one format performs better.

2. Confirm the refill before you buy
Look for a refill code or an explicit compatibility statement on the product page or packaging. For the V5 system, PILOT identifies a refill compatible with V5 and V7 pens. Do not assume it fits unrelated models. For the B2P Ball Plus, verify the refill specified for the exact version you are considering.
3. Read the recycled-content claim closely
Prefer a clearly defined percentage and check whether it refers to total product weight or only part of the pen. PILOT Europe’s B2P Ball Plus page states more than 85% recycled plastic by total product weight. A high recycled-content figure can help compare material claims, but it does not by itself measure the product’s full environmental impact.

4. Check local naming and availability
PILOT’s UK page says its Begreen name, used for the eco-designed range since 2006, was changed to PLUS+, with recycled-content percentages presented using total product weight. The Nordic PILOT page describes Begreen products as Eco Mark certified and says the label uses whole-life-cycle evaluation and third-party certification. Those statements are market-specific; confirm the name, model and current certification on the package in your country (PILOT UK; PILOT Nordic information).

The cited EPA and PILOT sources support practical checks for refillability and recycled content. They do not establish which pen has the lowest total environmental impact. The B2P’s recycled-plastic percentage is a manufacturer claim, and the V5 refill count is a manufacturer specification; neither proves overall environmental superiority.

Do not infer from “recycled” or “refillable” that a pen is compostable, accepted in local curbside recycling, non-toxic or carbon-neutral. The sources cited here do not establish those claims for these models. If end-of-life handling matters to your decision, check local recycling rules and the product’s current packaging.
