The Onion was sold by G/O Media to Global Tetrahedron on April 25, 2024. Jeff Lawson, Twilio’s former CEO and co-founder, was the new company’s principal financial backer—but the reported buyer was Global Tetrahedron, not Lawson acting alone. The sale price was not disclosed in contemporaneous reporting.

Who bought The Onion?

G/O Media announced the sale of The Onion to Global Tetrahedron on April 25, 2024, according to Axios. The acquiring company was newly formed and backed primarily by Jeff Lawson, the former Twilio CEO and co-founder. That distinction matters: reports described Lawson as the buyer’s principal backer, while naming Global Tetrahedron as the company that acquired The Onion.

Who was behind Global Tetrahedron?

Axios identified four media veterans behind the buyer: Lawson, Ben Collins, Leila Brillson, and Danielle Strle. It reported that Collins would serve as CEO, Brillson as chief marketing officer, and Strle as chief product officer. Former G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller described the group in a staff memo as having “a profound love for The Onion and comedy based content,” as reported by Axios.

How much did Jeff Lawson pay for The Onion?

The sale price was not disclosed in Axios’s April 25, 2024 report. A later New York Times story quoted Lawson recalling, “I said, ‘I have $600 — who wants to help me buy this?’” That was a recollection about the group’s early interest, not the purchase price or a confirmed account of the transaction’s funding. The same story quoted Lawson saying he hoped to own The Onion for the rest of his life.

What happened to The Onion after the sale?

In an August 17, 2024 report, The New York Times said The Onion had begun distributing a monthly print edition for the first time in more than a decade, as part of perks planned for online subscribers. The story also described an effort to focus on paying customers and reduce some digital advertising. Those are developments reported in 2024; current subscription terms and print availability are not established here.

Was the Infowars bid part of the Onion sale?

No. Global Tetrahedron’s November 2024 bid involving Infowars was a separate matter from its acquisition of The Onion. A legal-news report described the bid as covering Infowars intellectual property, social accounts, copyrights, trademarks, and websites; the price was not disclosed, and final court approval was still outstanding at the time of that report. That separate bid should not be confused with the April 2024 Onion transaction.
