There is no single best ecommerce platform for every business. The right choice depends on how you sell, how complex your catalog and operations are, how much technical work you can take on, and the full cost of running the store—not just its monthly subscription.

This guide compares eight candidates named in the available comparison: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Adobe Commerce, PrestaShop, and GoDaddy. The evidence is deeper for the first five; treat the remaining options as candidates to investigate rather than proven winners. Verify current plans, payment terms, and regional availability directly with each provider before committing.

How to choose an ecommerce platform

Start with the way your business works, then compare platforms against that reality. A small, design-led shop and a growing store with complex operations do not have the same requirements. Avoid choosing by a universal ranking or a low introductory price alone.

  • Sales model and channels: List where customers buy from you—your website, social platforms, marketplaces, or in person—and confirm the platform supports the channels and payment methods you need in your market.
  • Catalog and operations: Consider product count, variants, inventory workflows, shipping, and cross-border sales. More complex operations may benefit from built-in capabilities, but confirm the relevant features are included in the plan you would use.
  • Control and maintenance: Decide whether you want a hosted service that manages much of the technical stack or software you configure and maintain yourself.
  • Features and extensions: Compare what is native to the platform with what requires paid apps, plugins, or extensions. Add-on dependence can affect both cost and upkeep.
  • Customization: Decide how much control you need over the storefront and underlying setup, and whether your team has the skills to maintain that flexibility.

Compare the eight platforms by fit

The comparison below describes likely fit, not a universal ranking. Current plan-level details and equal-depth independent comparisons are not established for every candidate, so check providers’ current terms before making a decision.

Platform General fit What to weigh
Shopify Merchants seeking a dedicated hosted platform and multiple sales channels. The comparison describes online, social, marketplace, and in-person selling features, integrated payment options, and a large app ecosystem. Costs and payment terms depend on plan and geography; check which features and fees apply to your market.
WooCommerce Businesses that want a WordPress-based store and are prepared to manage more of the technical setup. The core plugin is free, but hosting and other services are separate. Flexibility and extensions come with responsibility for selecting, maintaining, and paying for the wider stack.
BigCommerce Growing businesses or stores with more complex needs to investigate. The comparison points to marketplace and cross-border capabilities. BigCommerce’s own guide emphasizes native features and scaling; treat its performance and ease-of-scaling statements as vendor claims, not independent test results.
Wix Businesses that want to combine a website builder with ecommerce tools. BigCommerce’s vendor-authored guide describes drag-and-drop simplicity and flags catalog and scaling limitations. Confirm that Wix’s current ecommerce features match your catalog and expected growth; the cited caveats are not independent test findings.
Squarespace Design-led businesses with smaller catalogs to consider. The comparison identifies ecommerce capabilities, but the available evidence does not establish a precise current plan-level recommendation. Verify the features and terms you need directly.
Adobe Commerce A candidate for businesses to assess if they need a more specialized commerce setup. The comparison names it but does not provide equal-depth evidence here to establish a current plan, cost, or specific best-fit profile. Research current requirements and terms before shortlisting it.
PrestaShop A candidate for businesses willing to investigate a less fully specified option. The comparison names it but does not provide equal-depth evidence here to establish current costs, features, or a specific best-fit profile. Verify the complete operating requirements.
GoDaddy A candidate to compare if you are considering a website-builder route. The comparison names it but does not provide equal-depth evidence here to establish current ecommerce capabilities, costs, or a specific best-fit profile. Confirm that its current offering supports your sales and operational needs.

Calculate the total cost, not just the subscription

A platform’s headline price is only one part of the operating cost. Build a monthly and annual estimate for your likely store setup, using provider terms that apply to your country and plan.

  • Subscription or hosting charges, as applicable.
  • Domain costs and any separate services needed to run the site.
  • Payment processing charges and any platform transaction fees that apply to your payment setup.
  • Paid apps, plugins, themes, and extensions needed for essential workflows.
  • Maintenance effort or technical help required to manage the store.

WooCommerce’s core plugin being free does not make a complete store free: hosting and other services are separate. For hosted platforms, check which capabilities are included at each plan level and whether the payment terms differ by plan or location. Prices, rates, features, and availability can change, so use the providers’ current terms for your target market rather than relying on old comparison figures.

Hosted convenience or self-managed control?

Hosted platforms

Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace are examples of hosted services in the options considered here. A hosted route can reduce the amount of infrastructure a merchant must arrange directly. The trade-off is that capabilities, customization, and costs depend on the provider’s plans and ecosystem. Check whether key requirements are built in or require apps.

WordPress with WooCommerce

WooCommerce runs as a WordPress plugin. It offers a WordPress-based route with a flexible extension ecosystem, while the merchant must arrange hosting and manage more of the technical stack. It can suit a business that values control and has the capacity to maintain its setup; include hosting, extensions, and upkeep in the budget.

Options needing closer investigation

The comparison also names Adobe Commerce, PrestaShop, and GoDaddy, but the available detail is not sufficient to make a reliable plan-by-plan comparison with the better-documented options. Before shortlisting any of them, confirm current requirements, service model, costs, included commerce features, and the technical work your team would own.

Make a shortlist for your business

  1. Write down must-haves. Specify your sales channels, payment needs, catalog complexity, geographic markets, and any operational workflows that cannot be compromised.
  2. Separate essentials from preferences. Identify which capabilities must be native and where you would accept a paid app, plugin, or extension.
  3. Choose your maintenance boundary. Decide how much hosting, configuration, and technical upkeep your team can take on.
  4. Price the actual setup. Compare the subscription or hosting, payment charges, platform fees, and essential add-ons for each candidate, using current terms for your market.
  5. Verify before committing. Check the provider’s current plan details, regional availability, and payment support against your requirements rather than relying on a general platform label.

If you are asking, “What is the best ecommerce platform for small business?”, begin with the size and needs of your own operation rather than assuming all small businesses need the same tool. A simpler storefront, a WordPress-based store, and a growing multichannel business can reasonably favor different platforms.
