Online credit card scams often begin with a message or a shopping page that looks legitimate. Four patterns to watch for are phishing, fake online stores, digital skimming, and card-not-present fraud. They are not a ranked list: the first three can expose card details, while card-not-present fraud is a way those details may later be used.

How the four scams differ

These patterns can overlap. Phishing, fake stores, and digital skimming are ways criminals may obtain payment information; card-not-present fraud describes using stolen card details for an online purchase without the physical card.

Pattern How it reaches you What may happen next
Phishing or bank impersonation An email or text poses as a bank, card issuer, retailer, or payment service. You may be pushed to click a link, open an attachment, or disclose account or card information.
Fake online store or deceptive offer A bogus merchant page or implausible deal attracts a shopper. You may pay for goods that do not exist or do not match the offer, while exposing payment details.
Digital skimming Malicious code is placed on a checkout page. Payment details entered during checkout may be captured.
Card-not-present fraud Someone has already obtained card details by this or another route. The details are used to make an unauthorized online purchase without the physical card.

1. Phishing and bank impersonation

A scammer may impersonate a bank, card issuer, retailer, or payment service in an email or text. The message may claim there is a problem with your account or a transaction and urge you to act quickly. Its link may lead to a lookalike page designed to collect credentials or card details; an attachment may also be used to deliver harmful software. The FTC explains how these messages trick people into giving personal and financial information in its guide to recognizing and avoiding phishing scams.

Do not use the message’s link or phone number to verify the claim. Go to the organization’s known website yourself or call the number printed on your card. A familiar logo, urgent wording, or convincing sender name does not establish that the message is genuine. Visa gives similar advice in its guide to phishing and financial fraud.

2. Fake online stores and deceptive offers

A fraudulent seller may advertise goods that are never delivered, or present an offer that is materially different from what arrives. Deep discounts and polished pages can make a bogus merchant appear credible. Visa has warned about fake merchants using phishing websites and heavily discounted goods as lures in its holiday fraud alert.

Before entering payment details, check the web address carefully and consider whether you reached the store through an unsolicited message or unfamiliar advertisement. A padlock icon or HTTPS connection indicates an encrypted connection; it does not prove that the seller is honest or that the offer is real. The OCC’s credit and debit card fraud guidance also advises consumers to be cautious when shopping online.

3. Digital skimming at checkout

Digital skimming involves malicious code on a merchant’s checkout page that captures information a shopper enters, such as card details. The page may belong to a real merchant whose checkout has been compromised, so a familiar store name alone cannot rule out risk. Visa’s digital-skimming guidance recommends checking URLs, avoiding unsolicited links, using anti-phishing protection, and securing accounts with strong passwords and multifactor authentication where available.

These practices reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that a checkout page is safe. To lower avoidable risk, type a retailer’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, verify that the URL is the intended site before paying, and avoid entering card information after following an unexpected link.

4. Card-not-present fraud

In card-not-present fraud, someone uses stolen card details to make an online purchase without possessing the physical card. The OCC uses this term for unauthorized online purchases made with stolen card information. It is often the consequence of an earlier exposure—such as phishing, a compromised checkout, or a fake merchant—rather than a separate way the details were first stolen.

Review transactions through your issuer’s official app or website, and contact the issuer promptly about a charge you do not recognize. The issuer can explain how to dispute it and what protections apply to your account.

Steps that reduce your risk

  • Verify unexpected requests independently. Do not provide card or account details in response to an unexpected message or call. If an alert claims your account has a problem, use the known official website or the phone number on your card—not contact details supplied in the alert. The CFPB describes warning signs and ways to verify suspicious requests in its guides to common types of fraud and scams and warning signs of possible fraud and scams.
  • Avoid unsolicited links and unknown QR codes. Open the retailer or financial institution’s site independently rather than using a link or QR code in an unexpected message. The CFPB advises caution around suspicious links and QR codes.
  • Check the address before paying. Look for misspellings, unexpected domains, or an address that does not match the retailer you intended to visit. HTTPS alone is not proof of a legitimate merchant.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication. Where available, enable multifactor authentication and use a strong, distinct password for each account. Anti-phishing protection in your browser can add another layer, but none of these measures is a guarantee against fraud.
  • Do not let pressure replace verification. Scammers may use urgency, familiar branding, or caller ID to push a quick response. Pause and confirm through a contact channel you found independently. The FTC explains common pressure tactics in How To Avoid a Scam.

What to do if your card details may be exposed

  1. Contact your card issuer promptly. Use the number on the card or the issuer’s known official website. Explain what happened and ask what protective steps to take.
  2. Ask whether to cancel and replace the card. Review recent transactions and flag charges you do not recognize. The FTC recommends cancellation and replacement when card information has been given to a scammer, along with continued statement checks, in its cybersecurity guidance.
  3. Ask how to dispute suspicious charges. The issuer can explain its dispute process or whether a payment for a bogus service may be eligible for reversal. Do not assume every charge will be reversed.
  4. Change exposed or reused passwords. If you shared a password, change it on the affected account and anywhere else you reused it. Choose unique passwords for those accounts.
  5. Use official recovery and reporting resources if more information was exposed. If you disclosed broader personal or financial information, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps tailored to your situation. The FTC also explains how to report suspected phishing and fraud in its phishing guidance.
