Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →January marketing can aim at two different outcomes: bringing in near-term sales and building demand for the next busy season. The ideas below offer practical ways to test both, from a post-holiday bundle to customer research and seasonal ad tracking. None is proven to convert for every business; choose based on your audience, margins, location, and capacity, then compare results with your own baseline.
How to choose a January marketing idea
Start with the problem you need to solve. A shop with holiday inventory to move needs a different campaign from a service business trying to fill future bookings. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recommends using the off-season for both current sales and longer-term work, including offers, customer feedback, alternative audiences, and next-season planning. Its September 27, 2018 article is a set of practical recommendations, not a measured trial: SBA guidance on marketing a seasonal business.
- Name the outcome: sales, bookings, referrals, repeat visits, useful customer feedback, or readiness for next season.
- Check the economics: account for discount depth, fulfillment costs, inventory, and staff capacity before setting an offer.
- Choose an audience and channel: existing customers, local residents, or another feasible group may respond through email, social media, partnerships, or paid search.
- Measure one result: track relevant inquiries, bookings, redemptions, or sales and compare them with a sensible baseline.
There is no general January conversion rate or typical sales lift established by the sources cited here. Treat “convert” as an aim to test, not a promised result.
Offers that can support near-term sales
Use a promotion only when it fits a real customer need and the numbers work. BBB guidance dated January 8, 2026, and Shopify campaign examples published December 9, 2025, describe approaches such as relevant offers, bundles, early access, subscriptions, and clearance. They are sources of ideas, not evidence that one offer will outperform another.

- Run a short post-holiday sale: discount in-season stock that still has a clear use, rather than marking down everything by default.
- Make a fresh-start bundle: combine items or services around a genuine customer task or goal.
- Try a flash offer: use a short window only when the deadline is real and the price remains profitable.
- Add a bonus instead of cutting the price: a useful extra may preserve more margin than a blanket markdown.
- Bundle proven pairings: bring together complementary products customers already tend to buy together.
- Offer a membership or subscription incentive: use this when recurring service genuinely suits the business and customer.
- Give returning customers early access: invite them to a new product, service, or next-season booking before a wider release.
- Encourage early payment or booking: consider a sustainable incentive for customers willing to commit ahead of the busy season.
- Clear holiday-specific stock: make the clearance event and eligible inventory clear, so customers understand what is actually limited.
BBB advises selecting first-quarter occasions that fit the business rather than forcing a holiday hook. Shopify likewise suggests using education and product-use ideas when constant discounting is not sustainable. See BBB’s post-holiday sales guidance and Shopify’s New Year campaign examples.
Retention and customer participation
Existing customers can be a practical audience to reach in a slow period. Keep the request relevant, make any reward sustainable, and seek permission where required before using customer details for marketing.

Useful content and email ideas
The SBA recommends lower-cost channels such as email, social media, and public relations for seasonal businesses with limited off-season budgets. Its guidance is to stay in touch rather than going dark; choose a cadence your business can sustain, and send marketing email only with appropriate permission. Constant Contact’s November 19, 2025 newsletter guidance includes gratitude, tips, polls, challenges, segmentation, and experiments. Its calendar references are year-specific, so check dates for the January you are planning: Constant Contact’s January newsletter ideas.
- Send a New Year thank-you: include one useful update rather than a string of generic seasonal messages.
- Share a practical checklist: use the business’s expertise to help customers complete a January task.
- Publish a tutorial: show how to use a product or service for a relevant early-year need.
- Segment messages: offer loyal customers a suitable next step and give newer subscribers a more appropriate welcome message.
- Test subject lines or send times: change one element at a time and compare clicks or conversions with your own prior sends.
- Share customer stories or preparation: show a customer experience or behind-the-scenes work, getting permission where needed.
- Promote a workshop or class: teach something useful in person or online, with a clear next step if attendees want more.
- Repurpose one guide: turn a useful article or checklist into a newsletter item and a few social posts to use limited time efficiently.
Local reach, new audiences, and next-season readiness
When regular traffic slows, consider whether a different audience, offer, or task is feasible—not simply whether it sounds promising. The SBA’s off-season guidance includes local residents, corporate customers, business partnerships, alternative services, new geographies, customer education, and planning for the next season.

How to test paid January search
For a paid seasonal campaign, Google Ads Help advises creating a separate campaign, targeting relevant locations, and tracking conversions so you can see which searches and ads produced outcomes. Its illustrative restaurant example says the keyword “New Year’s Eve dinner” led to 76 contacts from potential customers; that figure is an example from one campaign, not an expected result or industry benchmark. See Google Ads Help on seasonal campaigns.
