Knighthead affiliate Shelby Companies Limited (SCL), rather than Wagner personally, acquired control of the club: it held 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited after completing a full takeover in November 2025. Here are four useful facts about Wagner’s career, the ownership structure, his ambitions for the club and Birmingham, and the club’s updates on his health.
1. Wagner co-founded Knighthead and previously worked at Goldman Sachs
A 2023 announcement naming Wagner chairman of Birmingham City described him as a co-founder and co-CEO of Knighthead Capital Management and said he had previously worked for Goldman Sachs. The announcement does not establish his full career history, his Goldman Sachs job title, or how long he worked there. The 2023 appointment announcement supports those concise career details, but not a fuller account of his wealth or investment history.

2. Knighthead’s affiliate took control in stages
Wagner is often described as Birmingham City’s owner, but the acquiring company is Shelby Companies Limited, a Knighthead affiliate. The distinction matters: Wagner is the club’s chairman and a Knighthead co-founder, while SCL is the entity that bought the shares.
| Date | Ownership event | Reported stake |
|---|---|---|
| July 2023 | SCL completed its initial transaction in Birmingham City Limited. | 45.98%, as reported by BBC Sport in July 2023. |
| 7 November 2025 | SCL completed its full takeover, acquiring the remaining 51.1% of shares. | 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited, as reported by BBC Sport in November 2025. |
Birmingham City Limited owns the club. The club said SCL would continue to be solely responsible for club operations after the takeover. So, when describing the ownership precisely, SCL holds the reported controlling stake; Wagner’s public role is chairman.

3. The Premier League and Sports Quarter are ambitions, not completed outcomes
In a BBC interview published on 4 June 2025, Wagner said promotion to the Premier League in 2026–27 was “certainly the goal.” That is an ambition he stated at the time, not a guarantee that Birmingham City would be promoted.
Wagner also described a proposed east Birmingham Sports Quarter, with a target of opening by 2030. The plans he discussed included:

- A recreational soccer ball with a resilient butyl bladder for casual games
- SOFT AND DURABLE: Machine-stitched construction ensures a soft touch and high durability
- KEEPS ITS SHAPE: Butyl bladder for best air retention
- REQUIRES INFLATION: Ships flat, pump not included
- A proposed 62,000-seat stadium.
- A 20,000-seat arena.
- A hotel and club training facilities.
Wagner called the stadium a vision; the interview is evidence of the proposal, not proof that it has been approved or built. He said the broader development was expected to involve £2–3 billion in planned private investment. Separately, the interview reported a government commitment of £2.4 billion for transport links. Those figures refer to different sources of funding and should not be treated as one project budget. BBC Sport’s 4 June 2025 interview reported the targets and figures.

On 11 February 2026, Birmingham City said Wagner had suffered a stroke, received rapid medical intervention and was making a good recovery. The club said he would step back from daily responsibilities for a period and that its plans and operations would continue as normal under its leadership. BBC Sport reported the club’s statement.
