The available figures do not establish that American Airlines’ cancellations “skyrocketed worse than the government shutdown.” The shutdown figures are largely industry-wide, while the later American Airlines rate covers January–July 2026; the periods and measures do not provide a like-for-like comparison. The data do show a sharp rise in staffing-related cancellations across Airlines for America’s member airlines late in the shutdown, and American said the shutdown affected hundreds of thousands of its customers.
What the cancellation figures actually compare
A cancellation count is the number of flights called off. A cancellation rate divides cancellations by scheduled flights. Comparing one period’s count with another period’s rate—or comparing different date ranges—cannot show which disruption was worse. Passenger impact is another measure: a flight count does not reveal how many travelers were affected or whether they reached their destinations later.
There is also a carrier-attribution issue. Airlines for America (A4A) reports figures for its member airlines, not American Airlines alone. And flights sold under a major airline’s brand may be operated by a regional carrier, so a carrier comparison needs a consistent rule for assigning flights.
What happened during the 2025 shutdown
The U.S. government shutdown lasted 43 days. In its reopening update, American Airlines called it “the longest government shutdown in U.S. history” and said the disruption caused widespread delays and cancellations around the country, including cancellations required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The airline said hundreds of thousands of its customers were affected, but the statement did not give an American-only cancellation total.

A4A’s member-airline figures show that staffing-related cancellations accelerated late in the shutdown. They are not a breakdown for American Airlines:

The FAA’s reduction directive and an observed cancellation rate are not interchangeable. The directive required airlines to reduce flights; the cancellation figures describe flights that were canceled. In his Senate testimony, Sununu warned that “a cancellation rate of 6 percent for several consecutive days” for air traffic control staffing reasons alone would be highly disruptive. That was a warning about the potential operational effect of the directive, not a claim that American Airlines had a 6% cancellation rate.

What the 2026 American Airlines rate can—and cannot—tell you
AirAdvisor’s aggregation of Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data reports a 2.84% cancellation rate for American Airlines for January–July 2026. The same aggregation reports 2.31% across carriers for January–July 2026 and 1.72% across carriers for January–July 2025. These are secondary figures covering January through July, not a full-year result.
The American Airlines figure is not a shutdown-period rate. The all-carrier comparison figures also do not provide a matched American Airlines rate for the same shutdown dates. So they cannot establish that American’s cancellations during a later period were worse than its shutdown performance, or explain why flights were canceled. BTS data is the official starting point for a comparison; the Department of Transportation (DOT) says its consumer report’s delay tables use BTS data.

Why the financial and winter-storm figures are different
American Airlines estimated that the 2025 shutdown had a negative revenue impact of $325 million. That is a company estimate of lost revenue, not a cancellation count, cancellation rate, or passenger total. CEO Robert Isom said the shutdown “hit us harder than others,” as quoted by Skift, and said bookings returned after the shutdown ended. His comment describes the company’s reported business impact; it does not establish that American had more shutdown cancellations than other airlines.
American also reported more than 9,000 cancellations from Winter Storm Fern in 2026, which it called its largest weather-related operational disruption. That figure concerns a later storm, not the government shutdown, and should not be used as a shutdown comparison.

How to judge a claim that one disruption was worse
A reliable comparison needs the same kind of measure on both sides. Check each of these before treating a headline’s “worse” claim as established:
- Matching dates: Compare periods of the same length and identify whether they cover the shutdown itself or a later disruption.
- Same metric: Keep cancellation counts separate from cancellation rates, revenue impacts, and passenger totals.
- Comparable denominator: For a cancellation rate, use cancellations divided by scheduled flights for the same carrier and period.
- Consistent carrier attribution: Identify the operating carrier, including regional flights, rather than relying only on the airline brand shown to passengers.
- Cause coding: Distinguish weather, airline-controlled issues, and national aviation system causes such as air traffic control staffing constraints.
- Passenger impact: Flight totals alone do not show how many people were affected or how long their journeys were delayed.
What to do if your American Airlines flight is canceled
For a canceled or significantly changed flight, DOT says you are entitled to a refund if you choose not to travel or accept a credit, voucher, or other compensation. The refund rule applies regardless of the reason for the disruption. The distinction matters if you are deciding whether to accept another form of compensation: under DOT’s notice, service-plan commitments to mitigate inconvenience apply to airline-controlled disruptions, while the refund entitlement is not limited to those causes.
