A list of companies is not a list of open jobs: hiring, waitlists, eligible countries and available tasks change. The 16 names below are leads to check on their official sites, not 16 confirmed vacancies.
What online transcription work involves
Transcriptionists turn recorded speech into text. Depending on the role, you may also create captions, add speaker labels, follow verbatim or edited-text instructions, or work with specialized material such as legal recordings. The job is remote in many cases, but that does not necessarily mean employee status, fixed hours or guaranteed work.
Transcription pay is often quoted per audio or video minute—not per hour you spend working. The time needed to listen, research unfamiliar terms, format, proofread and revise affects what a quoted rate works out to for your time.
16 companies to investigate
Indeed’s guide, updated June 16, 2026, names the following companies. Except for the specific details noted for Rev and GoTranscript, their current openings, rates and terms were not independently confirmed here. Treat each as a starting point and check its official recruiting page before applying.

For comparison, look at whether a platform accepts your country and language now, the test and experience required, task type, compensation unit, work availability, payout method and timing, deadlines, and how it reviews corrections or quality. A test pass does not mean that assignments will be plentiful.
How to apply when you have no experience
Some companies accept applicants without transcription experience if they pass an assessment. Other roles—especially in specialized fields—may prefer experience, credentials or familiarity with technical vocabulary. No single typing-speed threshold is established as a universal qualification.

- Choose a role and check eligibility. Confirm that the company is recruiting for your language and location and that you meet the role’s stated requirements.
- Read the instructions before testing. Learn the platform’s style rules, including how it handles speaker labels, punctuation and verbatim versus edited transcription.
- Complete the assessment and sample yourself. Rev describes choosing a role, taking an assessment and submitting a sample. GoTranscript asks applicants to choose a language, read its guidelines, pass a language-specific test and wait for review.
- Proofread against the recording. Accuracy is not just typing speed. Rev’s version 4.0.2 style guide organizes its expectations around accuracy and formatting, including speaker attribution and following the requested transcription style. That guide was published September 13, 2019, and describes Rev’s rubric rather than a universal industry standard; see the Rev Transcription Style Guide.
- Wait for the result and assess the terms. Passing or submitting an assessment is not a promise of acceptance, regular assignments or a particular income.
How transcription pay works
Rev’s freelancer page lists the following vendor-stated ranges per audio or video minute. They are not hourly wage estimates or guaranteed take-home earnings. The page also says applicants complete an assessment and sample, and currently notes a waitlist.
| Rev role | Listed rate |
|---|---|
| Transcriptionist | $0.40–$1.10 per audio/video minute |
| Captioner | $0.54–$1.10 per audio/video minute |
| Legal transcriptionist | $0.55–$2.00+ per audio/video minute |
| Subtitle translator | $1.70–$4.00+ per audio/video minute; varies by language |
GoTranscript says compensation varies by language, audio length, difficulty, turnaround and quality. It pays completed files per audio minute and says payouts are weekly, with payment options depending on region. Check its current terms for your language and location before estimating income.

- Broad Software Compatibility – Designed to work with most major dictation and transcription software platforms, making it a dependable choice for professional transcription environments (software not included).
- Ergonomic & Fatigue-Reducing Design – Engineered for comfort during extended use, the pedal’s thoughtfully contoured layout supports natural foot positioning to help minimize strain and fatigue.
- Professional-Grade Performance – Ideal for medical, legal, insurance, and public safety applications, this USB foot pedal provides consistent responsiveness and durability for daily transcription workloads.
- Reliable Warranty Coverage – Backed by a 1 year Mail-In Parts/Labor Warranty for added confidence and long-term reliability.
To judge whether a per-minute rate suits you, consider the full time needed for a typical file: listening, replaying unclear passages, researching names or terminology, formatting, proofreading and handling revisions. A rate per recorded minute does not tell you how much you will earn per working hour.
Equipment: start with the basics
You do not need an expensive setup to begin. Indeed and GoTranscript describe a computer, reliable or high-speed internet, word-processing software and headphones as basic equipment; GoTranscript also recommends a quiet workspace. Software that slows or controls playback can make listening easier. A foot pedal can let you control playback without taking your hands from the keyboard, but it is optional in the cited guidance and not a universal requirement.

- Professional-Grade Reliability with Warranty – Engineered for consistent performance in professional transcription environments and backed by a 1 year Mail-In Parts/Labor Warranty.
- Start with equipment you already own if it produces clear playback and a reliable connection.
- Consider a USB transcription foot pedal only if it suits your workflow; check compatibility with the platform or software first.
- Choose comfortable headphones if you need an accessory, but no specific model has been established as necessary.
- Equipment does not guarantee acceptance, more assignments or higher pay.
Check the terms and avoid scams
Rev’s service agreement describes its service providers as independent contractors and conditions payment on work meeting accuracy and quality standards. That is Rev’s contract language, not a rule for every platform. Review the agreement for each role so you understand whether you are a contractor or employee and what the platform expects.
Before sharing personal information or beginning an assessment, use the company’s official website and check the application process, payment terms and account rules. Indeed advises looking for clear application steps and payment plans. GoTranscript says applicants should apply directly and never buy or sell an account.

What to expect as a beginner
Online transcription can be a way to pursue flexible remote work, but the practical barriers are the assessment, the time required to produce accurate work and uncertainty about task availability. Apply through official channels, compare the role’s actual payment unit and terms, and treat company lists as leads until you confirm an opening.
