Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center laid off an undisclosed number of employees during the week before May 1, 2025. The center attributed some job losses among staff connected to HIV-related grants to reduced federal grant funding, but said its IT layoffs were part of a planned reorganization unrelated to federal funding. The May 2025 reports did not establish an overall layoff count.
How many Fred Hutch employees were laid off?
Fred Hutch did not disclose a total number in reports published by GeekWire and KUOW on May 1, 2025. KUOW quoted former business systems analyst Andrea Galvan estimating that about 30 people in her IT department were laid off. That was her estimate for one department, not an official count for Fred Hutch as a whole.
GeekWire reported that Fred Hutch employed more than 5,700 people; that figure describes the workforce scale cited in its 2025 article, not a current headcount. It does not establish what share of employees lost jobs.
What reasons did Fred Hutch give for the layoffs?

Fred Hutch spokesperson Christina VerHeul told the outlets that some staff tied to HIV-related grants lost their jobs because of reduced federal funding. GeekWire reported that HIV-related work represented about 20% of the center’s federally funded research. That is a share of federally funded research—not a share of all research, grants, or employees.

VerHeul described the IT cuts separately, as part of a strategically planned reorganization “not related to federal funding.” The reports therefore do not support attributing every layoff to federal funding uncertainty.

That was a projected impact, not a realized loss. The article also reported that a U.S. District Court judge had granted an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order against the cap.
- GeekWire reported that the administration had ordered federal health agencies to cut contract spending by 35%. At a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, Sen. Patty Murray said nearly 800 NIH grants had been canceled, removing more than $1.1 billion for research and trials, and that NIH had blocked approximately $2 billion owed to grant recipients. Those figures were Murray’s statements as reported by GeekWire, not independently audited totals.
- Fred Hutch said it ran more than 450 treatment trials in its last fiscal year, many with NIH support, according to GeekWire. The article also reported uncertainty around a long-running women-focused health initiative coordinated by the center: after a proposed termination, HHS told media the program would be spared following public backlash, but Fred Hutch said it had not officially been informed of the reversal at the time.
Did the layoffs affect patient care?
KUOW reported Fred Hutch’s statement that patient care would not be affected. The May 2025 reporting conveys the center’s assurance; it does not independently establish whether patient care was affected later.

The story also described her anxiety about searching for work amid hiring freezes. GeekWire quoted an unnamed laid-off IT employee who, when asked about possible disruption to the institute’s work, said, “I’m worried that it will.” These accounts convey individual experiences, not the views of every affected employee.
