In a statement on April 29, 2025, the company clarified that its Amazon Haul team had considered listing import charges on some products, but the idea was never approved. That is narrower than an earlier report describing a planned display across Amazon: the company’s statement did not establish an approved plan for its main store.
What Amazon said about the tariff-price report
On April 29, 2025, Punchbowl News reported that Amazon planned to show how much of an item’s price came from tariffs beside its total price, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter. Amazon then issued a direct clarification, published by Amazon Staff: “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen.” Amazon’s statement addressed a Haul-only consideration, not an approved rollout on Amazon’s main site.
The two accounts differ on three important points:
- Scope: The initial report described a display beside Amazon product prices; Amazon’s statement referred only to certain products in its Haul store.
- Status: The report described a plan, while Amazon said the idea was considered but never approved.
- Attribution: The initial account relied on an anonymous source; the denial was an attributable company statement.
How the White House responded
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the purported move “a hostile and political act,” according to the Associated Press’s April 29, 2025 report. AP said the administration’s tone changed after Amazon clarified its position and described the White House response as based on a misinterpretation of internal plans. Leavitt’s phrase was a reaction to the reported proposal, not an established finding about Amazon’s intent.
Did Amazon add a tariff charge to product listings?
The available statements and reporting do not establish that Amazon added tariff labels or a tariff surcharge to US product listings. Nor do they provide a per-product tariff amount or a share of any listed price attributable to tariffs. The report’s claim and Amazon’s clarification should not be treated as evidence of a completed change to prices shoppers saw.

Import charges are not the same as a US tariff-price breakdown
Amazon UK’s help documentation says import charges may apply to some cross-border orders and can vary with factors such as destination, product category, price, and shipping method. Those charges relate to customs handling for cross-border purchases. They are a separate, region-specific process and do not show that Amazon implemented tariff breakdowns beside US product prices.
