Airbus won the 2024 commercial-aircraft race on deliveries and net orders. The manufacturers reported 766 and 348 deliveries respectively, and 826 and 279 net orders. That is a clear lead on those two measures—not an overall verdict on aircraft quality, safety, customers, or either company’s future prospects.
How Airbus and Boeing compared in 2024
The figures below cover calendar year 2024 and come from each manufacturer’s full-year disclosures. They are company-reported totals.
| Measure | Airbus | Boeing | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial-aircraft deliveries | 766 | 348 | Airbus delivered 418 more aircraft, a difference calculated from the reported totals. Its total was about 2.2 times Boeing’s, also a calculation. |
| Net commercial-aircraft orders | 826 | 279 | Airbus led after cancellations were accounted for. |
| Gross commercial-aircraft orders | 878 | not stated (The Boeing Company, 2025) | Gross orders are not directly comparable with net orders. |
Airbus reported delivering aircraft to 86 customers. Its delivery totals were 75 A220s, 602 A320-family aircraft, 32 A330s, and 57 A350s. Boeing’s 348 deliveries were down from 528 in 2023, according to its full-year results release. Airbus’s 2024 orders and deliveries announcement; Boeing’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 results.
Why net orders matter—and why gross orders differ
Net orders account for cancellations, making them a useful way to compare the orders remaining after those cancellations. Airbus reported 878 gross orders and 826 net orders; those are two distinct measures, not competing versions of the same figure. Boeing reported 279 net commercial-aircraft orders for 2024. On this after-cancellation comparison, Airbus led by 547 orders, calculated from the reported net totals. Airbus; Boeing.

Backlogs provide context, not a clean head-to-head score
Airbus reported a year-end commercial-aircraft backlog of 8,658 aircraft. Boeing’s January 2025 results release described a total-company backlog of $521 billion, including more than 5,500 commercial airplanes. Those figures differ in both scope and unit: one is an aircraft count, while the other is a dollar value covering the total company.
Boeing’s SEC filing separately reported a Boeing Commercial Airplanes backlog valued at $435.175 billion as of December 31, 2024. That is still a dollar-value measure, so it cannot be directly compared with Airbus’s aircraft count. Boeing’s filing also explains that cancellations and ASC 606 adjustments affect backlog accounting, another reason not to treat orders and backlog figures as interchangeable. What the result does—and does not—mean
If “won” means delivered the most commercial aircraft and recorded the most net commercial-aircraft orders in calendar 2024, Airbus was the winner. Those measures do not establish which manufacturer has safer or better aircraft, happier customers, stronger overall financial performance, or better long-term prospects; the figures here do not compare those dimensions.
Airbus executive Christian Scherer, CEO Commercial Aircraft, characterized the year in Airbus’s January 9, 2025 announcement: “2024 confirmed sustained demand for new aircraft. We won key customer decisions with most important customers and saw phenomenal momentum for our widebody orderbook, complementing our leading position in the single aisle market.” This is Airbus’s own executive perspective, not an independent assessment.
