That distinction helps explain a history shaped by engineering bets, brand acquisitions, financial rescues and changes of ownership. In 2026, Chrysler is an active Stellantis brand, not a standalone automaker.
When was Chrysler founded, and what company did it start as?
The first Chrysler-branded automobile, the Chrysler Six, debuted at the 1924 New York Auto Show. The corporation came a year later: on June 6, 1925, Walter P. Chrysler reorganized the Maxwell Motor Company, established in 1904, as Chrysler Corporation. The Detroit Historical Society likewise traces the corporation to the ailing Maxwell Motor Corporation. So 1924 marks the car’s debut, while 1925 marks the formation of the company.
Before taking on troubled automakers, Walter P. Chrysler had worked in railroads and risen to senior management at Buick and General Motors. His first Chrysler model helped establish the company’s engineering identity. Chrysler’s official history says the Six had a high-compression six-cylinder engine and standard four-wheel hydraulic brakes, as well as aluminum pistons, replaceable oil and air filters, full-pressure lubrication, tubular front axles, shock absorbers and indirect interior lighting. These are features highlighted by the manufacturer, not a claim that the car led every competitor in every respect. (Chrysler’s official history; Detroit Historical Society)
How Chrysler grew into a multi-brand automaker
Chrysler expanded in 1928 through both new brands and acquisition. It created Plymouth to compete in the lower-price market and DeSoto for the middle-price market, then acquired Dodge Brothers. The purchase added foundries, truck operations and a distribution network, helping Chrysler reach more buyers and build a broader industrial base. Plymouth, DeSoto and Dodge are important to the company’s history; that does not mean they are all part of Chrysler’s current brand lineup. (Detroit Historical Society)
The Airflow: a bold design with a difficult launch
Introduced in 1934, the Chrysler Airflow embodied an ambitious interest in aerodynamic design. Its streamlined body was developed with wind-tunnel testing, but the car also faced production delays and mechanical problems, and its styling failed to attract many buyers. The Airflow illustrates a recurring challenge for automakers: technical ambition does not guarantee commercial success. (Detroit Historical Society)
Postwar models and Chrysler’s growth
Across the decades, Chrysler’s model history included the 300 line, Newport, New Yorker, LeBaron, Town & Country, PT Cruiser and Pacifica. Chrysler’s official timeline says its sales had increased 65% by 1965, moving the brand from 11th to ninth in national rankings. The timeline does not provide the underlying data or methodology, so the figure is best understood as the company’s own historical account rather than an independently documented comparison. (Chrysler’s official timeline)
In 2017, Chrysler introduced the Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid. The company described it at the time as America’s first and only plug-in hybrid minivan. That was a manufacturer claim tied to the 2017 launch, not a description of today’s market. (Chrysler’s official history)
Why did Chrysler need federal loan guarantees in 1979?
Facing a severe financial crisis, Chrysler sought $1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees on September 7, 1979, according to the Detroit Historical Society. The distinction matters: the amount refers to guarantees requested to help the company avoid bankruptcy, not a $1.5 billion cash grant. The episode became a defining example of government support for a major U.S. automaker. (Detroit Historical Society)
What happened to Chrysler after Daimler?
Daimler-Benz and Chrysler announced a merger in 1998, creating the company commonly known as DaimlerChrysler. The combination brought together a German automaker and a U.S. automaker, but Daimler later reduced and then ended its ownership of Chrysler. Mercedes-Benz Group’s corporate history records the sale of majority stakes in Chrysler Group in 2007 and Daimler’s relinquishment of its remaining 19.9% stake in April 2009. How Fiat returned Chrysler to operation
In April 2009, Chrysler sought Chapter 11 restructuring and a new operating company was formed. The former Chrysler LLC and the reorganized Chrysler Group LLC were distinct entities: a Stellantis annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says the new FCA US, then called Chrysler Group LLC, acquired the principal operating assets of the former Chrysler LLC through a government-sponsored North American restructuring.
Fiat’s alliance with the new Chrysler Group began operations in June 2009. Fiat contributed platforms and technology and increased its ownership over time, reaching 100% by 2014. This was a restructuring and ownership transition, not simply a continuation of the old company under an unchanged corporate structure. How Chrysler became part of Stellantis
Fiat organized Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) as a global parent company. FCA and Groupe PSA completed their merger on January 16, 2021; the combined company adopted the Stellantis name and governance the following day. Chrysler became one marque within the larger group rather than a separately listed automaker. (Stellantis merger announcement)

Who owns Chrysler now, and what does the brand sell?
As of October 2026, Chrysler is a Stellantis brand. Stellantis’s May 2026 strategy identifies Chrysler as one of its regional brands, alongside Dodge, Citroën, Opel and Alfa Romeo, and says these brands will focus on core markets while drawing on shared global assets and pursuing stronger differentiation. The current Chrysler brand page centers its story on the Pacifica and identifies a refreshed 2027 Pacifica. In 2025, Stellantis previewed a refreshed Pacifica for 2026, a new crossover after it and a third product inspired by the Halcyon concept. Those were plans announced at the time; the current page confirms the 2027 Pacifica, but does not establish that the other proposed vehicles have launched.
