The 2026 Land Investment Expo put farmland investing in a wider frame: regional production, return assumptions, portfolio fit, deal sourcing, ongoing asset management, and economic and policy forces all matter. These seven takeaways synthesize published coverage of the event; they are not an official seven-point list from the organizers, and the coverage does not establish a single expected return or investment strategy.
What was the 2026 Land Investment Expo?
The 19th annual Expo was scheduled for January 13, 2026, in Des Moines. The Land Report’s retrospective describes a program spanning farmland investment, policy, geopolitics, and farming, including breakout sessions and a farmland masterclass hosted by Dr. Bruce Sherrick and Dr. Craig Lemoine of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The preview and retrospective describe the program’s themes, not a standardized investment recommendation. (The Land Report’s event preview; The Land Report’s May 1, 2026 retrospective)
The seven points below are an editorial synthesis of that published coverage. They should not be read as an organizer-issued list, a ranking, or proof that any investment approach will perform well.
Seven takeaways for farmland investors
1. Analyze farmland by region, not as one market
The masterclass addressed regional agricultural production systems. That matters because farmland investments sit within specific production and operating contexts; a broad national label does not tell an investor what a particular property can support. Compare opportunities using region-specific assumptions rather than treating one market or crop profile as representative of all farmland. The event coverage identifies regional production as a topic but does not supply a region-by-region investment ranking. (The Land Report retrospective)

#1 Best Overall
- Large Screen:Large 3.2" sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability,even in bright sunlight
- Professinal Accuracy: Supports 6 satellite systems (GPS, Beidou, Galileo,GLONASS, NAVIC and QZSS ) for high presion measurement, area error < 0.002 acres, distance error < 5 ft
- 7 Measurement Modes: Supports area measurement of irregular and regular terrain such as ranches, garden; length measurement of straight and curved lines, height and slope measurement, and can also save the coordinate points of the current position (can only save coordinates, cannot be modified)
- Rugged With Long Battery Life: IP65-rated for superior durability; powered by internal 4000 mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery, up to 48 hours in continuous use
- TIPS!!!: The device needed to be held horizontal for taking measurements. Recommend to measure Area above 0.04 acres and distance above 328ft. The larger the measurement range, the smaller the error. The altitude data displayed on the device is GPS altitude, which fluctuates with changes in the satellite signals received. This is normal
2. Treat return assumptions as assumptions, not an Expo-endorsed forecast
Financial returns were one of the masterclass subjects, but the retrospective does not report an event-wide return figure or forecast. An investor should therefore distinguish a property’s modeled return from a general claim about farmland as an asset class. The Expo coverage provides no basis for assuming a particular rate of return or for treating attendance as validation of one. (The Land Report retrospective)
3. Decide what role land would play in a portfolio
The event preview listed portfolio construction among the masterclass themes. That gives investors a useful comparison question: how would a land holding fit alongside their other assets and financial goals? The coverage does not compare portfolio strategies or provide deal-level performance data, so the Expo themes are a framework for due diligence—not a ranked answer about how much land to own. 4. Acquisition takes a repeatable pipeline
The masterclass covered developing and executing acquisition pipelines. In practical terms, sourcing opportunities and carrying a prospective purchase through execution are part of the investment work; they do not happen automatically once someone decides to buy farmland. The published coverage identifies pipeline development as a topic but does not prescribe a specific sourcing method or acquisition process. (The Land Report retrospective; The Land Report preview)
5. Ownership includes continuing asset management
The preview also named asset-management best practices as part of the masterclass. That places oversight after the purchase alongside acquisition in the investment discussion. The source does not spell out particular management tactics, so investors should not mistake the program theme for a detailed operating playbook. (The Land Report preview)

6. Include economic and geopolitical conditions in the risk picture
The event preview described sessions on macroeconomic forces and geopolitical dynamics, along with farmland values, policy shifts, and real-world investment considerations. Those subjects can shape the setting in which farmland decisions are made, but their inclusion in a conference program is not a prediction of what will happen or a guarantee of investment results. (The Land Report preview)
7. Farm economics are connected to crop markets and policy
An Illinois Soybean Association account published in February 2026 summarized an Expo outlook by Farmer Mac chief economist Jackson Takach. It discussed global crop supply, support programs, biofuel-related demand, and inflation, illustrating how farm economics can connect to conditions beyond an individual property. The account reported inflation at around 2.7% and said U.S. soybean-crush capacity had nearly doubled over the preceding five to six years. Those figures describe what the dated account reported; they are not current readings or timeless market facts. The account is secondary reporting of a presentation, not a substitute for checking the underlying statistical series. (Illinois Soybean Association, February 2026 account)

How to use the Expo themes when comparing farmland opportunities
The coverage does not provide comparable deal results or declare a best strategy. Use its themes as questions to investigate for each opportunity:
- Regional production: What agricultural production context applies to the specific region and property?
- Return assumptions: What assumptions support the projected financial return, and which are uncertain?
- Portfolio role: How would the holding fit with the investor’s other assets and objectives?
- Acquisition process: How will opportunities be sourced and moved through the purchase process?
- Asset management: What ongoing oversight will the investment require?
- External conditions: Which economic, geopolitical, crop-market, or policy factors are relevant to the investment case?
These are comparison axes drawn from the program topics, not a substitute for property-specific analysis. The event sources do not provide a ranked strategy comparison, a universal return benchmark, or enough detail to evaluate a particular deal.

How the 2026 recap differs from current Expo information
The Land Report’s retrospective concerns the 2026 event. Separately, the official Expo site currently lists the 20th annual Expo for January 12, 2027, with an optional Farmland Masterclass on January 11, and describes in-person and virtual options. Its agenda page says the 2027 agenda is coming soon. Check the official Land Investment Expo site and its agenda page for current event details; those future-facing listings are not part of the 2026 recap. (Official Expo site; Official agenda page)
