Start with who you are, give a truthful reason for calling, connect it to one relevant business issue, and ask a focused question. These seven adaptable templates cover common situations; they are prompts for conversation, not proven formulas or guarantees. Replace every bracketed detail with accurate information, and leave out anything you cannot verify.
How to use these cold call scripts
Keep the opening brief and conversational. Identify yourself and your company, say why you chose this prospect, and ask one question that makes it easy to respond. If the person engages, listen before explaining your offer. If they decline, respect that answer.
- Personalize the role, business issue, and reason for calling.
- Use a trigger—such as a hiring announcement or a new location—only if it is real and current.
- Do not imply a referral, prior request, existing relationship, customer result, or deadline that does not exist.
- These examples are practical writing templates, not experimentally validated scripts. No reliable comparative evidence establishes that one opener here performs better than another.
Seven cold call script examples
1. Direct, permission-based opener
Script: “Hi [Name], I’m [Your Name] with [Company]. This is a cold call—I’m reaching out because we help [type of business] with [specific issue]. Could I take 30 seconds to explain why I thought it might be relevant, and then you can tell me whether it’s worth discussing?”
Personalize it: Name a concrete issue your offer addresses. The permission request gives the prospect an easy way to continue or decline; it is a conversational choice, not a guarantee of better results.

Personalize it: Choose a problem genuinely connected to the person’s role and your service. Avoid presenting a general industry pattern as a fact about this prospect; the question should let them correct your assumption.
3. Verified trigger or referral
Script: “Hi [Name], I’m [Your Name] with [Company]. I saw [accurate, specific trigger] and thought it could make [relevant issue] timely. We help [type of business] with [service]. Is [issue] something you’re working on?”

What to say if they are not interested
Do not treat a refusal as an objection you must overcome. A respectful response can be as simple as: “Understood. Thanks for your time—I won’t keep you.” If they ask not to be contacted again, acknowledge the request and make sure it is handled according to your organization’s process and applicable rules.
Cold calling compliance: what to check
Legal requirements depend on the call, recipient, location, and applicable exceptions. The examples above are not legal advice, and a business prospecting script should not be assumed to fall outside all telemarketing rules.
- The FTC says the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) provides consumer protections related to telemarketing and the National Do Not Call Registry. Its rule summary addresses disclosures, misrepresentations, call times, requests not to be called, and payment practices. Review the FTC’s TSR guidance for current scope and requirements.
- For an outbound sales call subject to the TSR, the FTC compliance guide says the caller must promptly and truthfully disclose the seller’s identity, that the purpose is to sell, and the nature of the goods or services before giving the pitch. The rule has exceptions; do not assume this disclosure requirement applies identically to every B2B call. See the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule compliance guide.
- The FTC says most calls to businesses made to solicit sales from those businesses are exempt from the TSR’s Do Not Call provisions. That limited exemption is not a blanket exemption from other federal, state, or local requirements. Consult the FTC guidance and relevant authorities for your campaign.
- The FTC compliance guide also warns that third parties helping create sales scripts, supply lists, or provide telephony services may violate the TSR if they knowingly or consciously avoid knowing that a seller or telemarketer is violating it. Script providers and callers should not facilitate deceptive or unlawful calls.
The FTC reported more than 2.6 million Do Not Call complaints and more than 258 million active registrations for FY 2025. The agency describes complaint data as unverified complaints, not a consumer survey; those figures indicate the scale of registrations and reports, not the population-wide rate of unwanted calls. See the FTC’s FY 2025 registry data. Rules and figures can change, so check official sources before relying on them for a current campaign.
