Check the couple’s registry, choose a gift you can comfortably afford, and send it according to their delivery instructions. Wedding-gift etiquette is a set of helpful customs, not a spending requirement: the couple’s preferences, your relationship, local tradition, and your own finances all matter.
1. Check the registry first, but treat it as a guide
A registry is a practical way to learn what the couple wants or needs. It may include household goods, luggage, gift cards, a cash fund, or a charity donation. Emily Post describes a registry as a convenience, not a mandate; you are not required to buy from it. See Emily Post’s guide to choosing a wedding gift and The Knot’s registry etiquette guide.
If you do shop elsewhere, use what you know about the couple’s taste and needs. Avoid replacing a particular registered item with a guess at what they might like, or buying something likely to duplicate a gift they have already selected.
2. Set a budget that works for you
There is no required amount, and you do not have to spend enough to “cover your plate.” Decide what fits your finances and relationship with the couple; attending the wedding does not create an obligation to spend beyond your means.

The Knot’s 2024 Guest Study reported an average wedding-gift cost of $150. Its reported averages were $160 for close friends, family, and wedding-party guests, and $140 for a casual friend. The study surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults ages 18–54 who had attended at least one wedding in person during 2024. These are descriptive survey results, not minimums, recommendations, or universal expectations. Read The Knot’s wedding-gift etiquette article.
3. Choose a gift that suits the couple and your budget
A registry item is an easy option if it is affordable and available. Cash or a check can also be appropriate, as can a gift-card or cash-fund contribution when that matches the couple’s stated preference. A thoughtful off-registry gift is reasonable when you know it will suit them.

The Knot reported that 75% of couples asked for cash in its 2026 Annual Registry Study. The finding came from an email survey of 1,759 members with wedding dates between April 2025 and December 2026, collected in May 2026. It describes those survey respondents; it does not mean every couple wants money. See The Knot’s article on giving money as a wedding gift.
4. Make group gifts easy to identify
Pooling money with friends or family for one larger gift is acceptable. Include every contributor’s name on the card so the couple knows whom to thank. If the card has limited space, add a separate note listing the group.

5. Present cash or a check with a card
Put the money or check in a card with a personal message, and make clear who it is from and who it is for. Lizzie Post, co-president of the Emily Post Institute, advises: “Make sure there’s a card and that it’s very clear who the money is from and who it’s for.” A registry cash fund or gift card can be a good alternative if that is what the couple requested. The Knot’s cash-gift etiquette article also quotes etiquette expert Heather Wiese Alexander: “If you’re giving money as a wedding gift, it’s a two-part play: Give both money and thoughtfulness.”

Send a gift before the wedding or soon afterward when possible. Emily Post gives three months after the wedding as the outer limit. Check the registry or wedding website for shipping details: the couple may prefer gifts sent to an address rather than brought to the event.

Bringing a present to the wedding can be appropriate where that is customary in the couple’s culture or community. If you are unsure, check the couple’s instructions or ask someone close to them rather than assuming there will be a convenient place to leave it. Thank-you notes are the couple’s responsibility, not an extra task for guests; Emily Post’s thank-you-note guidance addresses their side of that etiquette.
