6 Ways to Use a Crypto Exchange Aggregator to Save on Crypto Swaps

A crypto aggregator can find routes across DEXs, but savings are not guaranteed. Compare output, minimum received, gas and fees before signing.

A crypto exchange aggregator can search multiple decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and sometimes split a trade across routes to find a better quote. It cannot guarantee savings. To see whether a swap is actually cheaper, compare the expected output and minimum received with all fees and gas for the same token pair, amount, network and wallet mode.

1. Compare the full quote, not just the headline rate

Look beyond the displayed exchange rate. Check the expected output, minimum received, network gas, pool or swap fees, and any aggregator, integrator or interface fee. These are separate costs: a promising rate can still produce a worse overall result after fees. Ethereum.org recommends making key swap costs visible in DEX interfaces: Ethereum.org’s DeFi overview.

For a fair comparison, use the same token pair, input amount, network, wallet mode and approximate time. Quotes and gas estimates can change quickly, so treat them as snapshots rather than lasting savings claims.

2. Compare routes for your exact pair and trade size

Aggregators may source liquidity from several protocols or divide a trade among routes. That can improve the quoted output, but the result depends on the available liquidity and the size of your trade. A quote for a small amount does not reliably predict what a much larger swap will receive.

Review the route and number of hops alongside the output. A route with more steps is not automatically worse, but it is worth understanding what you are authorizing and whether the quoted result justifies the route’s costs.

3. Understand what “fast” means in a quote setting

Some services offer choices that trade off how a quote is produced. Uniswap’s API documents BEST_PRICE and FASTEST; in that API, “fastest” means the quote is returned more quickly. It does not mean the resulting on-chain transaction will settle faster. This behavior is specific to Uniswap’s API, not a universal aggregator setting: Uniswap Aggregator API documentation.

4. Check whether your selected mode covers network gas

Do not assume gas is included because an interface describes a swap as gasless or resolver-assisted. The cost can depend on the product, network, token and trade size. For example, 1inch’s guidance says Pro DEX aggregator users pay network gas, while its Swap interface generally uses resolver-covered gas, subject to exceptions such as some networks, native-token swaps and small trades routed through its DEX aggregator. Confirm the terms for the mode you are using: 1inch’s swap-fee guidance.

Also account for any approval transaction your wallet requests. Approving a token and executing a swap can be separate transactions, each with its own network cost.

5. Set slippage tolerance deliberately

Slippage is the difference between the quoted price and the price at execution. The market can move while a transaction is pending, and larger trades or thin liquidity can increase the chance of a worse result. Your slippage tolerance determines how far the execution may move from the quote before the swap is rejected; for a typical exact-input AMM swap, the minimum received is the lower output bound implied by that tolerance.

Uniswap Developers explain: “If the execution price ends up outside of the accepted slippage range, the transaction will fail, and the swap will not occur.” A failed transaction may still consume network gas. Raising the tolerance can permit a worse execution, so do not increase it reflexively to force a swap through. See Uniswap’s swap documentation.

6. Review the route and approval before signing

Before you authorize a transaction, verify the token contract, network, route, expected output, minimum received and fee fields in the interface and wallet. Check what the wallet approval allows as well as what the swap will do. An aggregator does not remove smart-contract or token risks, and transaction ordering can expose a swap to maximal extractable value (MEV), including sandwich attacks that worsen execution.

Protection against MEV is provider- and mode-specific; do not treat it as a guarantee offered by every aggregator. If a transaction fails, inspect the wallet and transaction details before retrying or changing your tolerance.

How to compare quotes fairly

  1. Enter the same token pair and input amount on each service, using the same network and wallet mode.
  2. Record the expected output and minimum received for each quote.
  3. Identify pool or swap fees, provider or integrator fees, estimated gas, and any separate approval cost.
  4. Inspect the route and number of hops, then compare the total expected cost and execution conditions.
  5. Make the comparison close in time to execution; quotes and gas estimates are volatile.

Fees differ by product and can change. Uniswap says its API is free to use, but integrators may charge a fee in a quote. Its FAQ permits an integrator fee of up to 5% of swap value; that is a vendor-specific API ceiling, not a typical fee or a general aggregator rate: Uniswap’s aggregator fee guidance. A September 25, 2026 Uniswap changelog entry says the integrator-fee field accepts up to four recipients, with a combined cap of 500 basis points for applicable router versions: Uniswap Aggregator API changelog.

1inch likewise describes fees as dependent on trading mode, including infrastructure fees and differences in how swap surplus is handled across interfaces and API-provider layers. Its guidance is specific to its products; it should not be reduced to a claim that 1inch swaps are free: 1inch’s swap-fee guidance.
