CoinGecko Research’s year-end 2025 figures give one notable meme-coin return—FLOKI’s 420.2%—in a table of large crypto assets, while its separate top-gainer ranking contains no meme coins. That is a retrospective result, not evidence of what will gain next.
What the 2025 figures do—and do not—say
CoinGecko Research examined the 300 largest crypto assets by market capitalization on December 18, 2025, comparing performance from January 1, 2025, or from the earliest available data when an asset lacked a January 1 figure. In its table for that universe, FLOKI’s return was 420.2% through December 18.
That figure should not be confused with a dedicated ranking of the year’s hottest meme coins. CoinGecko says no meme coin appeared in its 2025 top-gainer ranking. The two statements can both be true: FLOKI’s return is reported in a table of large assets, but the report does not identify it—or any meme coin—as one of the year’s top gainers.
The figure describes a past measurement window. It does not predict a future return, establish what an investor could have earned after trading costs, or show that a coin remains attractive at a later price.

Why this is not a substantiated list of six coins
The supplied title names FLOKI and Simon’s Cat but does not identify the other four picks or define the “wildcard.” The available figures do not establish a six-token shortlist, so naming four more coins would mean choosing them without a stated selection rule or evidence that they belong on this list.
A defensible comparison would first define its universe and cutoff date, then apply the same measures to every token. Relevant measures include:
- Return period and calculation method, with the start and end dates stated.
- Market capitalization and liquidity on the same date, rather than market capitalization alone.
- Circulating supply and maximum supply, with the source and observation date.
- Chain and contract identity, particularly where a ticker can refer to more than one asset.
- Documented ecosystem activity, kept separate from evidence of price performance.
Without those choices, a “six hottest” ranking can mix different time periods, asset identities, or selection standards and appear more comparable than it is.
How to interpret the market backdrop
CoinGecko Research estimated that total memecoin market capitalization reached $150.6 billion in December 2024, then stood at $47.2 billion in November 2025. These are estimates for those specific dates, not current market values. They illustrate how sharply the sector’s aggregate value had contracted from its reported peak; they do not show how every token performed.
Rank #3
In a separate update revised June 16, 2025, CoinGecko co-founder Bobby Ong described a 32% decline in category market capitalization and a 72% decline in volume compared with the February 3, 2025 peak. Those percentages use that earlier peak as their comparison point and should not be presented as current declines.

What the named projects tell an investor
FLOKI
CoinGecko describes FLOKI as a token on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain and identifies Valhalla as one of its uses. Its 2025 report also discusses gaming, DeFi, and NFT applications in the FLOKI ecosystem. These are project and ecosystem details, not proof that the token will appreciate; the reported 420.2% return is a separate historical measure with a defined end date.
Simon’s Cat
CoinGecko’s profile identifies Simon’s Cat as CAT and lists BNB Chain and Solana. The profile’s circulating-supply and maximum-supply figures are volatile data, and no current supply figure is established here. A ticker by itself is not enough to verify a token before a transaction; check the correct chain and contract address against an authoritative project or exchange source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before treating a meme coin as an investment
Meme coins are speculative assets. A token’s market-cap rank, historical return, or announced utility cannot establish its future value. Before committing money, an investor should independently verify the asset identity and date-stamped market data, understand whether the amount at risk can be lost, and avoid treating a past winner as a forecast.
Quick Recap
- Identity: Confirm the chain and contract address, not just the ticker or project name.
- Market quality: Check whether reported trading volume is accompanied by enough liquidity to enter and exit at a reasonable price.
- Supply: Distinguish circulating tokens from maximum or future supply, and date the figures.
- Time window: Read the start date, end date, and comparison universe behind any percentage return.
- Risk: Consider the possibility of rapid losses and whether the investment fits your financial situation; ecosystem features do not remove market risk.
