On U.S. turkey packages, words such as “natural,” “organic” and “free-range” describe different things—and none is a universal grade of quality. Five claims have clear support in the USDA materials summarized here. The title’s sixth claim is not identified by an authoritative source, so this guide does not invent one. Compare each exact phrase and its qualifier with what the label actually establishes.
What do marketing claims on turkey labels tell you?
Some claims describe ingredients and processing; others concern how the bird was raised or identify a certified production system. They are not interchangeable. A useful label-reading question is: What does this wording establish, and what does it leave unanswered?
| Claim | What it describes | What supports it or limits it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural | Ingredients and processing | USDA’s turkey guide defines the term narrowly as no artificial flavoring, coloring ingredients, chemical preservatives or other artificial or synthetic ingredients, and no more than minimal processing. USDA FSIS, Turkey Raised by the Rules (revised September 2011). | Organic status or a particular diet, antibiotic policy or raising method. |
| No antibiotics added / raised without antibiotics | Antibiotic use during production | USDA says producers must sufficiently document to FSIS that antibiotics were not used in feed, water or intramuscularly. FSIS’s 2024 guidance recommends routine sampling and testing or third-party certification that includes testing for negative claims. USDA FSIS, Constituent Update, August 30, 2024. | A guarantee about every conceivable test for residues. |
| No hormones added | A claim about hormones in poultry raising | Federal regulations do not permit hormone use in poultry; USDA’s turkey guide says the claim must be accompanied by a statement that federal regulations do not permit hormones in poultry. USDA FSIS, Turkey Raised by the Rules. | A special production advantage over other poultry raised under the same federal rules. |
| Organic | A defined, certified production and labeling system | USDA organic labeling rules set ingredient thresholds and rely on accredited certification, inspections and records. USDA AMS, Labeling Organic Products. | That the turkey is pesticide-free or that the word “natural” alone means organic. |
| Free-range | An animal-raising claim | FSIS requires substantiation and approval for meat and poultry label claims and encourages third-party certification. USDA FSIS, Constituent Update, August 30, 2024. | A particular minimum amount of outdoor access; the cited guidance does not establish a turkey-specific duration. |
What does “natural” mean on a turkey label?
“Natural” is about the product’s ingredients and processing, not how the turkey was raised. USDA’s turkey guide describes a natural meat or poultry product as having no artificial flavoring, coloring ingredients, chemical preservatives or other artificial or synthetic ingredients, and as being no more than minimally processed.
So the word alone does not tell you whether the turkey was raised organically, without antibiotics, on pasture or with a particular feed. Those are separate claims that need to be evaluated on their own terms.

What does “no antibiotics added” mean?
The claim concerns a production practice: antibiotics were not used in the bird’s feed, water or by intramuscular administration. USDA’s consumer guide says producers must provide sufficient documentation to FSIS to support the claim. In its August 30, 2024 update, FSIS recommended routine sampling and testing or third-party certification that includes testing for negative antibiotic claims.
This wording should not be read as a promise that every possible test will find no residue. In the same 2024 update, FSIS discussed a cattle study—not a turkey study—in which approximately 20% of samples tested from the “Raised Without Antibiotics” market had evidence of antibiotic use. Those samples came from cattle at 84 slaughter establishments in 34 states. The figure is context for substantiation concerns, not a result about turkey products.

Is turkey with “no hormones added” actually different?
Not in the way the front-of-package phrase may suggest. Federal regulations do not permit hormone use in poultry. USDA’s turkey guide says a poultry label making a no-hormones claim must also state that federal regulations do not permit hormones in poultry. The claim is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a distinctive advantage over other turkey raised under the same rule.
What does “organic” mean on turkey?
“Organic” is a defined labeling and certification system, not a synonym for “natural.” USDA Agricultural Marketing Service guidance says a product labeled “organic” must contain at least 95% organic ingredients, excluding salt and water. A product labeled “made with organic” must contain at least 70% organic ingredients and has different display restrictions. These thresholds concern ingredient labeling; consult the package and its exact wording rather than treating the two phrases as equivalent.

What does “free-range” mean on a turkey label?
“Free-range” is an animal-raising claim, so it needs support and agency review on a meat or poultry label. FSIS strongly encourages third-party certification for animal-raising claims. The cited FSIS guidance does not state a turkey-specific minimum duration or amount of outdoor access, so the phrase alone should not be converted into a precise promise about time outdoors.
How should you compare claims when choosing a turkey?
- Read the complete claim. Note qualifiers and accompanying statements, not just the largest words on the front.
- Identify what kind of claim it is. “Natural” addresses ingredients and processing; “no antibiotics added” and “free-range” concern raising practices; “organic” identifies a regulated certification system.
- Look for the relevant support. Organic labeling is tied to accredited certification. Negative antibiotic claims require documentation, and FSIS recommends testing or certification that includes testing. Free-range claims require substantiation and label approval.
- Do not treat a claim as proof of something else. Natural does not establish organic status or raising practices, and a no-hormones phrase does not distinguish a turkey from poultry raised under the same federal restriction.
The FTC explains that advertising can convey express and implied messages through its overall context, and that advertisers must have proof for claims consumers take from an ad. Its guidance is available in Advertising FAQ’s: A Guide for Small Business. For meat and poultry labels, FSIS handles the label-review context.

Which sixth claim belongs in a “six marketing claims” list?
The title alone does not identify one, and the cited official sources do not publish a definitive six-claim list for turkey. “Fresh,” “frozen,” “kosher” and other wording might appear on a particular package, but the available sources do not establish which one the title intends. In particular, they do not define “fresh” or provide its temperature threshold. A sixth claim should be named only after checking the specific package and current authoritative guidance.
