The credit depended on the system’s efficiency ratings, the home’s use, and the installation date. The federal credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so an air conditioner installed in 2026 does not qualify under this credit.
Does a new central air conditioner qualify for a tax credit?
For 2025, a qualifying central air conditioner could be claimed under the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, Internal Revenue Code §25C. The credit was 30% of eligible costs, including certain installation labor, but no more than $600 for central air conditioning.
The $600 equipment limit sat within the $1,200 annual limit for applicable home-efficiency improvements. Certain heat pumps and biomass equipment had a separate $2,000 limit; that higher limit did not apply to a central air conditioner. If you claimed other eligible improvements in the same year, they could affect how much of the $1,200 limit remained available. See the IRS overview of qualifying expenditures and credit amounts.
What SEER2 rating qualifies for the 2025 tax credit?
The qualifying efficiency thresholds depended on whether the central AC was a split system or a packaged unit. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 guidance lists these minimums:

These thresholds apply to the qualifying system, not simply a brand name or an individual component. Check the ratings for the complete installed equipment combination and the applicable CEE tier for the year the system was placed in service. The ENERGY STAR central air conditioner tax-credit guidance provides the 2025 requirements; the IRS also directs taxpayers to Department of Energy tools for checking product performance.
Can I claim the air conditioner credit if it was installed in 2025?
For this credit, the relevant date is when the original installation was complete and the property was placed in service—not merely when you ordered the equipment or paid a deposit. The IRS says costs are treated as paid when original installation is complete. A system paid for in 2025 but not placed in service until 2026 does not meet the 2025 timing rule.

The IRS’s Instructions for Form 5695 (2025) state: “You can’t claim energy efficient home improvement credits for expenditures or property placed in service after December 31, 2025.” The IRS repeated the cutoff in Fact Sheet 2025-05, dated August 21, 2025.
Which homes and taxpayers could qualify?
The property had to be installed in a home in the United States that the taxpayer used as a residence. The rules could include a qualifying second home and certain improvements made by renters. A landlord generally could not claim the credit for a rental property the landlord did not use as a residence. Review the IRS and ENERGY STAR guidance for how residence use applies to your circumstances.

What records and tax forms do I need?
Use the 2025 Form 5695 instructions when preparing a 2025 claim. They call for a Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number (QMID) for specified property placed in service during 2025. The form also requests the QMID and qualifying amount for central AC and limits the credit entry to $600.
- Keep the itemized invoice and proof of payment.
- Keep documentation showing when original installation was completed and the system was placed in service.
- Save manufacturer documentation identifying the equipment configuration and its SEER2 and EER2 ratings.
- Obtain and retain the applicable QMID and check that it matches the property being claimed.
Include only costs that qualify under the 2025 rules. The IRS form and instructions govern how to report the claim; keep supporting records with your tax documents.

What if I am buying an air conditioner in 2026?
The federal §25C air-conditioner credit described here ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not assume that a 2026 purchase or installation qualifies for the expired credit. State, local, and utility incentives may differ by location and program; check the relevant program’s current terms before relying on an incentive.
