TD Ameritrade was a legitimate US brokerage, not a scam. However, it is no longer an independent broker accepting new customers. Charles Schwab acquired TD Ameritrade and completed the migration of client accounts in 2024. The practical question today is therefore whether a website, email or person using the TD Ameritrade name is connected to the former business—or is impersonating it.
If you are being asked to send money to “TD Ameritrade” now, stop and verify the contact through Charles Schwab’s official website. Do not assume that a familiar name, logo or copied registration number proves legitimacy.
What happened to TD Ameritrade?
Charles Schwab acquired TD Ameritrade in 2020. The two businesses operated separately for a period while Schwab moved TD Ameritrade customers, accounts and services onto Schwab’s platform. The conversion was completed in 2024.
That means old TD Ameritrade reviews can be misleading. They may describe a platform, fee schedule or customer-service arrangement that no longer exists. TD Ameritrade was a genuine brokerage, but its former standalone consumer platform is not the same thing as a currently operating independent broker.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Existing customers were generally directed to Charles Schwab after the transition. A legitimate modern account-related message is therefore more likely to come from Schwab than from a new, separate TD Ameritrade operation.
Was TD Ameritrade a legitimate broker?
Yes. The genuine TD Ameritrade business was a major US brokerage regulated through the normal US securities framework. Its brokerage operations were associated with registration and oversight involving the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC).
That regulatory status did not guarantee profitable investments. It meant the firm was subject to rules covering areas such as customer assets, financial reporting, trade execution, supervision and conduct. Shares, funds, options and other investments could still fall in value.
Following the acquisition, the relevant firm and protection details should be checked against Charles Schwab’s current disclosures rather than relying on an old TD Ameritrade page or a registration number supplied by a caller.
Why are there “TD Ameritrade scam” complaints?
There are two different issues that often get mixed together:
- The former broker’s normal disputes: customers may have complained about trading losses, platform outages, margin calls, account restrictions, fees or the Schwab transition. A complaint does not by itself show that a broker is fraudulent.
- Impersonation scams: criminals can use the TD Ameritrade name, old branding and copied website content to solicit deposits, personal information or remote access.
A scammer may claim to be an account manager, recovery agent, compliance officer or investment adviser. Common pitches include guaranteed returns, private trading opportunities, cryptocurrency profits and urgent requests to “unlock” or “verify” an account.
Red flags that a TD Ameritrade contact is fake
| Red flag | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Unsolicited WhatsApp, Telegram or social-media contact | A genuine brokerage should not require a private chat channel to manage your account or solicit an investment. |
| Guaranteed or unusually high returns | Brokerages cannot guarantee that shares, options or other market investments will make money. |
| Payment by cryptocurrency, gift card or wire to an individual | These payment methods make recovery difficult and are common in investment fraud. |
| A demand for a “tax”, “release fee” or “withdrawal charge” before returning your money | This is a classic advance-fee pattern. Paying usually produces another demand. |
| A login link in an unexpected email or text | The link may lead to a credential-stealing copy of a brokerage website. |
| Pressure to act immediately | Urgency prevents you from independently checking the firm and the payment instructions. |
| Requests for a password, one-time code or remote computer access | These details can allow criminals to take over an account or bypass security. |
How to check whether a message is genuine
- Do not use the contact details in the message. Do not click its links, call its number or reply to the sender.
- Open the official Charles Schwab website manually. Type the address into your browser or use a bookmark you created previously. Be careful with sponsored search results and lookalike domains.
- Log in through the official site or app. If the account is genuine, important notifications should normally be visible inside the secure account area.
- Call the number shown on an official Schwab statement, card or website. Do not use a number supplied by the person who contacted you.
- Check the firm and individual on FINRA BrokerCheck. This can show whether a broker or adviser is registered and disclose relevant disciplinary or customer information.
- Check SEC or state-regulator information where appropriate. Registration does not prove that a particular caller is genuine, but it helps identify the legal entity and its permitted activities.
A copied FINRA number, SEC logo or former TD Ameritrade address is not enough. Scammers routinely copy real regulatory details while replacing the phone number, email address and bank account.
What happened to customer investments during the transition?
The 2024 migration was an account-platform conversion, not evidence that TD Ameritrade disappeared with customer assets. Customers received information about the move, and brokerage accounts were transferred to Schwab’s systems under the applicable account agreements and regulatory arrangements.

Investors should still distinguish between custody protection and investment performance. A brokerage normally holds customer securities separately from the firm’s own corporate assets, subject to applicable law and recordkeeping requirements. That does not stop a share price from falling, an option from expiring worthless or a leveraged position from generating a loss.
SIPC protection is not insurance against market losses
US brokerage accounts may qualify for SIPC protection if a member brokerage fails and customer securities or cash are missing, subject to SIPC rules and limits. The standard SIPC protection limit is generally $500,000 per customer, including a maximum of $250,000 for cash claims.
SIPC does not cover:
- Losses caused by falling stock, fund or ETF prices.
- Poor investment decisions or unsuitable trades.
- Normal trading losses.
- A fraudulent investment scheme that was never held in a covered brokerage account.
- Every type of financial product or every type of loss.
Some brokerages purchase additional private insurance, but that does not turn a risky investment into a guaranteed one. Check the current Schwab disclosures for the exact account and coverage arrangements.
Fees and platform claims in old TD Ameritrade reviews
TD Ameritrade historically became known for commission-free online trading in many US-listed stocks and ETFs, a broad fund and options offering, thinkorswim trading tools and substantial educational material. Those were genuine features of the former platform, but they should not be treated as current TD Ameritrade terms.
Today, pricing and services should be checked on Charles Schwab’s current fee schedule. Online US-listed stock and ETF commissions, options contract charges, margin rates, mutual-fund transaction fees, broker-assisted trades and international trading costs can differ. “Commission-free” also does not mean cost-free: bid-ask spreads, fund expenses, regulatory fees, margin interest and option-contract charges may still apply.
| Claim in an old review | How to interpret it now |
|---|---|
| “Open a new TD Ameritrade account” | Outdated. New customers should check Charles Schwab’s current account-opening process. |
| “TD Ameritrade thinkorswim” | The thinkorswim platform is associated with Schwab after the acquisition. |
| “$0 trades” | Check what transaction is covered and whether other costs apply. |
| “TD Ameritrade customer service” | Use current Schwab contact information, not a number from an old article or unsolicited message. |
| “TD Ameritrade is accepting deposits” | Treat this as suspicious unless verified directly through an official Schwab channel. |
What to do if you already sent money
- Stop communicating with the suspected fraudster. Do not pay a further “recovery” or withdrawal fee.
- Contact your bank, card issuer or payment provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be recalled or frozen.
- Change your email and financial-account passwords from a clean device. Do not reuse passwords.
- Contact Charles Schwab using independently verified details if you supplied credentials or believe a brokerage account was targeted.
- Report the incident to the FTC, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the relevant regulator or local law-enforcement agency.
- Save screenshots, wallet addresses, emails, phone numbers, receipts and chat logs. Do not edit the originals.
Speed matters, particularly for bank wires and cryptocurrency transfers, although no recovery method is guaranteed.
Advantages and disadvantages of the former broker
| Advantages | Disadvantages or limitations |
|---|---|
| Established US brokerage with regulatory oversight. | TD Ameritrade is no longer an independent consumer broker. |
| Strong educational resources and trading technology. | Old reviews and fee comparisons are now potentially obsolete. |
| Broad range of securities and account types. | Options, margin and leveraged products can produce rapid losses. |
| Customer accounts were migrated to Schwab rather than abandoned. | Some users may dislike changes to interfaces, statements or service arrangements. |

Does TD Ameritrade still have customer accounts?
Former TD Ameritrade customer accounts were migrated to Charles Schwab during the 2023–2024 transition. Contact Schwab through independently verified channels if you need help with an old account.
Does SIPC protect me if my investment loses money?
No. SIPC protection generally addresses missing customer cash or securities after a covered brokerage failure, subject to its rules and limits. It does not cover normal market losses or poor performance.
Is a WhatsApp message from TD Ameritrade genuine?
Treat it as suspicious. Do not send money or personal information. Verify any account issue by logging in through the official Schwab website or calling a number from an official statement or website.
What is the safest way to verify a TD Ameritrade email?
Do not click its links or use its phone number. Visit Charles Schwab directly, check secure in-account messages and contact Schwab using independently sourced details. Also check relevant registration information through FINRA BrokerCheck or the SEC.

The Bottom Line
TD Ameritrade was a legitimate broker, not a scam, but the standalone business no longer operates as it did in older reviews. Charles Schwab completed its acquisition and migrated customer accounts in 2024. Treat any new request to deposit money, share codes or pay a withdrawal fee under the TD Ameritrade name as a possible impersonation scam. Verify through official Schwab channels before taking action.
