There is no defensible, like-for-like global top 16 in the available figures. The rankings cover different seasons and count different things: audited costs for all club employees, estimates of first-team salaries, and weekly wage estimates are not interchangeable. A list that combines them would imply a precision the data does not support.
Why there is no reliable global top 16
A club’s place in a wage-bill ranking depends on the period measured and what the source counts. A completed financial year in audited accounts is different from a current-season estimate. And first-team base salaries do not measure the same costs as annual wages and benefits for a club’s entire workforce.
The available sources provide useful snapshots, but they do not supply one consistent set of 16 clubs with comparable figures. Some are limited to Champions League participants or Europe’s top five leagues; none of the cited material establishes a current, worldwide ranking on a single accounting basis.
What the available rankings actually measure
| Source | Period and scope | Measure and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Deloitte Football Money League 2026 | Financial year ending in 2025, corresponding to 2024/25; clubs covered by Deloitte’s Money League | Deloitte ranks revenue, not wage bills. Its wage-cost definition is broad: wages, salaries, signing-on fees, bonuses, termination payments, social security contributions and other employee benefits for players and technical and administrative employees. |
| SalaryLeaks | 2025/26 Champions League; 36 clubs | Estimated first-team base salaries. Bonuses and coaching or other staff salaries are excluded. |
| Planet Football, using FBref figures sourced via Capology | 2026/27; European top-five leagues | An estimate, not a global audited ranking. The reported Inter Milan figure appears anomalous and should be checked against the cited upstream data before relying on it. |
| Retained List | Tracked figures labelled verified October 2026 | Weekly first-team wage estimates, not audited annual costs for all employees. |
| UEFA European Club Finance and Investment Landscape | European clubs; reported aggregate figures for 2023 in the 2025 report | UEFA’s report summary says wages at the 20 clubs with the largest wage bills grew 1.9% in 2023 and the average wage-to-revenue ratio was 64%. These are aggregate context, not a list of 16 clubs; the underlying tables are needed to validate the figures and their definitions. |
What counts as a club’s wage bill?
Annual accounts and broad employee costs
Deloitte’s definition illustrates why an accounting wage bill can exceed the sum of player salaries. It includes employee costs beyond players’ pay, as well as bonuses, signing-on fees, termination payments, social charges and benefits. Its Football Money League 2026 report also records €12.4 billion in cumulative revenue for Money League clubs in 2024/25. That is revenue context, not a wage-bill total or ranking.

First-team salary estimates
Salary tables that count only first-team base salaries answer a narrower question: what players are estimated to earn before bonuses and without coaching or other staff costs. They can help compare squads within the table’s stated competition and season, but they should not be labelled audited club wage bills.
Weekly estimates versus annual costs
A weekly estimate is not directly comparable with an annual figure unless the source’s scope and method are known and the time period is converted consistently. Multiplying a weekly figure by 52 would not resolve differences in coverage, bonuses, benefits, or whether the estimate reflects a full season.

How to judge a claimed highest-wage-bill ranking
- Check the season. Make sure every club is measured over the same season or financial year.
- Check the scope. A Champions League list, a top-five-league list and a worldwide list cover different populations.
- Check what is counted. Look for whether the figure includes only first-team base salaries or also bonuses, staff, benefits and social charges.
- Check the source type. Audited annual accounts, regulatory submissions and third-party estimates should be clearly distinguished.
- Check currency and period. Weekly estimates, annual totals and figures converted between currencies need a stated method before comparison.
- Check the underlying data when a figure looks unusual. The Planet Football 2026/27 table’s Inter Milan figure is a case where an apparent anomaly makes upstream verification especially important.
What a wage bill can—and cannot—tell you
A large wage bill indicates substantial spending on employee compensation under the source’s definition. By itself, it does not establish sporting success, financial distress, or how affordable that spending is for the club. For financial context, wage costs can be compared with revenue, but only when the numerator and denominator cover the same period and use compatible definitions. UEFA’s reported 64% average wage-to-revenue ratio for the 20 clubs with the largest wage bills in 2023 is a group statistic, not a ratio for every club or every league.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So which 16 clubs pay the most?
The available evidence does not support naming a definitive global top 16 without mixing estimates, accounting periods and definitions. A responsible ranking would need one source with a clearly stated season, worldwide club coverage, consistent wage-cost scope, currency and methodology. Until figures meeting those conditions are available, a list of 16 names presented as a single ranking would be misleading.
