Older V8 cars can make compelling projects or daily drivers, but “under $10,000” is a shopping target—not a promise that a sound example is available at that price near you. The CarCody Team’s March 6, 2026 list suggests candidates across muscle cars, sedans, luxury cars, trucks, and an SUV. It repeats the Pontiac GTO and Chrysler 300C, however, so it does not provide 15 distinct models. The models below are deduplicated from its recommendations; their inclusion is not a verified current-price listing.
For a personal-finance decision, compare the asking price with likely repair exposure, fuel, insurance, and the car’s actual condition. A cheap purchase price can be offset by deferred maintenance, especially on older luxury models.
How to read the under-$10,000 list
CarCody’s article is a set of recommendations, not a dated survey of listings or transaction prices. It does not establish that every model—or a clean, unmodified example—is currently available below $10,000 in any particular market. Treat the budget as a search filter and check local listings before choosing a target. The source also gives horsepower and ownership-cost figures that are not independently substantiated there, so they are not repeated as verified specifications here.
The recommendations below are grouped by what they may suit. Model years and engine descriptions are those named by CarCody; verify the exact powertrain and equipment on an individual vehicle by its VIN and documentation.

Muscle cars and performance coupes
Ford Mustang GT (2005–2010; 4.6-liter three-valve)
A modern-enough Mustang GT choice in the source’s performance group. Inspect for modifications, clutch wear, suspension condition, and driveline noise; age and prior use matter as much as the badge.
Ford Mustang GT (2011–2012; 5.0-liter Coyote)
CarCody also points to the early Coyote-powered GT. The source offers no evidence that a sound example is routinely available under the budget, so treat it as a stretch search rather than a dependable bargain.
Ford Mustang GT (1996–2004; 4.6-liter two-valve)
An older Mustang option that may appeal to buyers comfortable assessing age, maintenance, and modifications. Check the clutch, suspension, and driveline, and do not assume a lower odometer reading means lower wear.
Chevrolet Camaro Z28 / Pontiac Firebird Formula (1998–2002; LS1)
These related performance-car candidates offer a V8-focused alternative to the Mustang. Look closely at modifications, clutch and suspension wear, and evidence of hard use.

Chevrolet Corvette (1992–1996; C4)
The C4 Corvette is the source’s two-seat sports-car option. Its age makes a careful check of the drivetrain, suspension, cooling system, and electrical equipment important before purchase.
Pontiac GTO (2005–2006; LS1/LS2)
CarCody recommends the GTO as another performance choice. It repeats this model in its article, but it is one distinct entry for purposes of this deduplicated list. Confirm the vehicle’s engine and condition rather than relying on a listing’s headline.

V8 sedans and sleepers
Dodge Charger R/T (2006–2010)
A four-door option for buyers who want a V8 sedan rather than a coupe. Check maintenance records, warning lights, transmission behavior, suspension, and signs of modifications.
Chrysler 300C (2005–2010 or 2005–2008)
The source gives two overlapping year ranges for the 300C and repeats the model in separate sections. Verify the particular car’s year, engine, and service history; the conflicting ranges are not a basis for assuming every version is equivalent.
Chevrolet Impala SS (1994–1996)
CarCody includes this full-size sedan among its sleeper choices. For a car decades old, inspect for rust, suspension wear, cooling issues, and drivetrain problems rather than treating its reputation as a substitute for records.
Ford Crown Victoria / Mercury Grand Marquis (1998–2011)
These full-size sedans are the comfort-oriented choices in this group. A specific car’s use history and maintenance matter; check for rust, suspension wear, warning lights, and transmission concerns.
Older luxury V8s: lower purchase price, more to assess
The source’s luxury picks may look inexpensive to buy, but its recommendation does not establish their total cost of ownership. More complex equipment can mean more repair exposure, and a low asking price does not show whether maintenance has been kept up.
Lexus LS400 (1995–2000)
CarCody’s comfort-focused luxury sedan candidate. Review service records and inspect the cooling system, suspension, electronics, and transmission condition.

BMW 540i (1997–2003)
This V8 sedan is a higher-complexity choice than a basic older car. The source flags cooling and timing-chain wear as inspection prompts, not proven failure rates; have a qualified mechanic assess the individual vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG (1999–2003)
CarCody includes the E55 AMG as a performance luxury sedan. Its age and equipment make service documentation, electronics, suspension, and drivetrain checks particularly relevant.
Jaguar XJR (1998–2003)
A powerful luxury-sedan option in the source’s list. Assess cooling, suspension, electronics, and maintenance history, and budget for the possibility that repairs will be less straightforward than on a simpler car.
Infiniti M45 (2003–2005)
The M45 is another less-common V8 sedan candidate. Check the transmission, cooling system, suspension, and availability of a credible service history before making an offer.
Trucks and an SUV
Chevrolet Silverado SS (2003–2006)
This expands the search beyond cars to a performance-oriented pickup. Inspect its condition, modifications, cooling, transmission, suspension, and evidence of demanding use.
Ford F-150 SVT Lightning (2000–2004)
CarCody says a clean Lightning under $10,000 is becoming rare, but supplies no listings to establish current availability or pricing. Treat that as the article’s assessment, not a market statistic, and scrutinize modifications and use history.

BMW X5 4.4i / 4.6is (2001–2006)
The X5 brings V8 power in an SUV body, with the repair complexity associated with an older luxury vehicle. Check cooling, transmission, suspension, electronics, and maintenance records.
What to check before buying
CarCody’s broad buyer advice is more useful than choosing by horsepower claims: buy the condition and maintenance history of the individual car. For any candidate, arrange a qualified independent pre-purchase inspection and ask the inspector to evaluate the systems relevant to that model and its symptoms.
- Review maintenance records and ask about recent repairs, warning lights, and unresolved faults.
- When possible, observe a cold start; note unusual noises, smoke, rough running, or warning lights.
- Check for drivetrain noise and have the transmission and differential assessed for leaks, abnormal behavior, or neglected service.
- Inspect the cooling system, suspension, brakes, and underbody for wear, leaks, or rust.
- Ask what modifications have been made and whether the work is documented. Non-original parts or tuning can affect reliability, insurance, and future repairs.
- Compare the full ownership picture—not just the asking price—including fuel use, insurance quotes, immediate maintenance, and a repair reserve. The source provides no consistent model-by-model fuel or insurance data.
A generic OBD-II code reader may reveal stored diagnostic codes on a compatible vehicle, but it cannot establish overall mechanical condition or replace an inspection. A clean dashboard reading is not proof that a car is sound.
Choose by intended use and repair tolerance
For a coupe or sports car, start with the Mustang, Camaro/Firebird, Corvette, or GTO, then judge whether the specific example has been modified or worn hard. For a four-door, compare the Charger, 300C, Impala SS, Crown Victoria, or Grand Marquis. The Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Infiniti add luxury equipment and potential repair complexity. The Silverado and Lightning offer pickup utility; the X5 is the SUV option.
Before traveling to see a car, confirm its title status, VIN, engine, service records, and asking price. Set aside money for an inspection and initial repairs rather than spending the entire budget on the purchase. If a seller will not allow an inspection or the records do not support the car’s condition, move on: the V8 badge does not make an uncertain example a good financial choice.
