Re:

Do 10 Supercars Really Depreciate Rapidly? What the Data Shows

The evidence does not support a current top-ten ranking of rapidly depreciating supercars. Historical examples explain why launch price, model, market, and measurement period matter.

There is not enough comparable, current evidence to name ten supercars that depreciate fastest. Hagerty’s May 2021 comparison offers useful historical examples and explains why values vary, but its published summary does not include a complete ranked table. Newer figures available from iSeeCars cover five-year depreciation across vehicle categories and identify cars that retain value—not a supercar top ten.

Why a reliable top-ten list is not available

A meaningful ranking needs the same market, purchase-price basis, and ownership period for every car. The available sources do not provide that. Hagerty’s 2021 study combined UK and US data, while the newer iSeeCars figures reported by The Car Guide concern US vehicle transactions from March 2025 through February 2026 and do not rank rapidly depreciating supercars.

Hagerty’s analysis covered Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. It generally examined models priced from $100,000 (£70,000) to below $500,000 (£350,000), excluding optional extras. The company said it combined more than 24,000 policy quote data points with information from AutoTrader UK, Premier Financial, and Woodside Credit, grouping vehicles by marque, model, sub-model, model year, body style, and engine.

That is useful context, but the accessible summary does not reproduce a full ranked list with comparable values for ten specific cars. Filling in the gaps by mixing markets, vehicle ages, and valuation methods would create a misleading ranking.

What the historical figures actually show

In its 2021 comparison, Hagerty reported typical depreciation of about 6% after one year and 20% after three years for the cars in its studied set. These are sample-level historical figures, not a current rate for every supercar.

  • Ferrari 488 Pista Coupe: Hagerty’s example was about 6% above value one year after launch, then about 7% below by year three. This illustrates how launch demand can temporarily lift values before depreciation takes hold.
  • Porsche 911 GT2 RS: Hagerty reported a decline of about 30% since launch in the comparison.
  • Aston Martin and McLaren: In Hagerty’s sample, cars from these marques depreciated by roughly one-fifth to one-quarter over three years.
  • Ferrari and Lamborghini: The study found that these marques tended to depreciate less than the German marques it examined during that period.

These findings describe Hagerty’s sample and period; they are not lasting brand rules or current estimates for an individual car.

Why one supercar can lose value faster than another

The starting price changes the apparent loss

Depreciation depends on the price used as the starting point. A buyer who pays a dealer markup or speculative launch price may record a larger loss when reselling than someone who bought at list price, even if both cars later sell for the same amount. Hagerty notes that unusually strong launch demand can lead to temporary appreciation followed by a sharper-looking decline.

Model, trim, body style, and market matter

Hagerty found differences not only between marques, but also among models, variants, body styles, and geographies. In its accessible-set comparison, convertibles generally depreciated less than their coupe counterparts, with exceptions for the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and Porsche 911 Turbo. It also found more depreciation in Porsche 911 GT3 variants than in Turbo coupes, which it associated with speculation, and more modest depreciation for the Lamborghini Huracán than for the Audi R8 5.2 V10.

Those are study-specific observations, not a basis for predicting every convertible, GT3, Huracán, or R8. Model year, condition, mileage, and local demand can also make an individual car differ from a broad comparison.

Depreciation needs a defined clock

“Since launch,” “after three years,” and “five-year depreciation” are not interchangeable measures. A result also changes depending on whether it compares MSRP with resale value, actual transaction prices, asking prices, or estimated values. Any useful ranking should state its market, vehicle age, price basis, and valuation method alongside each percentage.

How newer retention figures fit—and why they are not a supercar ranking

The Car Guide’s report on iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis says it covered more than 950,000 five-year-old vehicle transactions in the United States from March 2025 through February 2026. It reported average five-year depreciation of 41.8% across vehicles. Its figures for EVs (57.2%), trucks (34.2%), and hybrids (35.4%) are broad category comparisons, not supercar results.

The report’s low-depreciation examples are useful as a contrast, not as fast-depreciating cars:

Vehicle Reported five-year depreciation What the figure represents
Porsche 718 Cayman 9.6% Strong value retention in iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis, as reported by The Car Guide
Porsche 911 11.1% Strong value retention in iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis, as reported by The Car Guide
Chevrolet Corvette 18.7% Strong value retention in iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis, as reported by The Car Guide

These five-year US figures should not be merged with Hagerty’s 2021 UK-and-US comparison to produce one ordered list. The analyses differ in date, scope, and comparison basis. The Car Guide also quotes iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer: “It’s interesting to note that the two Porsches, plus one Lexus coupe, are the only luxury models to make the top 25 ranking for retained value.” That statement concerns the retention ranking, not the fastest-depreciating supercars.

How to assess depreciation before buying a used supercar

  1. Compare the exact car. Match model year, sub-model, engine, and body style; a marque-wide average can conceal large differences between variants.
  2. Establish the real starting price. Separate MSRP from the amount the first owner actually paid, including any launch markup. The two bases can produce very different apparent losses.
  3. Use one market and one time period. Compare vehicles from the same geography at the same age, rather than combining launch-to-date figures with fixed five-year estimates.
  4. Check what the value represents. Determine whether a figure reflects completed transactions, asking prices, policy quotes, or an estimate. They are not equivalent measures of what a specific car will sell for.
  5. Inspect the individual example. A market average cannot tell you whether a particular car’s condition, history, mileage, or maintenance needs justify its asking price.

Hagerty describes a tool for checking current and historical vehicle values; use it to investigate the exact model and year, not as a forecast of a particular car’s future price. Early depreciation also does not prove that a model will never become collectible: Hagerty cautions against treating early value loss as evidence for or against future collectability.
