For a U.S. buyer using a sub-$30,000 budget, the strongest used-SUV candidates depend on size and model year—not just the name on the tailgate. Published reliability evidence points to options including the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, Toyota Highlander, and Honda HR-V, but it does not support a universal ranking or guarantee a specific vehicle’s condition. Treat this as a shortlist, then compare local asking prices, mileage, maintenance records, and inspection results.

How to read a “most reliable used SUV” list

“Budget buyer” has no single dollar definition, so this shortlist uses two practical lenses: under $25,000 and under $30,000. The evidence is U.S.-market oriented, and local prices vary with location, mileage, trim, condition, and supply.

The sources measure different things. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide identifies selected 2015–2024 model years with above-average reliability and organizes them by price tier. iSeeCars ranks vehicles within price and size segments using its own analysis. J.D. Power’s dependability awards reflect owner-reported problems, while Edmunds offers an editorial synthesis. These approaches cannot be combined into one scientifically comparable top-ten order.

For a specific year, use the Consumer Reports 2026 guide as a year-specific screening layer, then use budget- and segment-specific rankings as additional evidence—not as a substitute for checking the individual vehicle.

10 used SUVs to put on a budget shortlist

The candidates below are grouped by size and use, not ranked from best to worst. The model-year leads are the years identified in the sources; they are not blanket endorsements of every trim or vehicle from those years.

SUV Model-year evidence Best fit and trade-off
Honda CR-V Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2024, including 2020–2021. iSeeCars ranks the 2021 CR-V first among small SUVs under $25,000, with an 8.0/10 reliability rating and a reported average used price of $24,788 on its 2026 page. A well-rounded compact choice. Check whether the exact year, mileage, and condition fit your local budget.
Toyota RAV4 Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2024. J.D. Power named the 2022 RAV4 its 2025 Compact SUV dependability winner. A compact contender for buyers who want a mainstream utility vehicle. Its popularity can affect asking prices, so compare local value rather than assuming it is the cheapest choice.
Mazda CX-5 Consumer Reports lists selected years including 2016–2019, 2023, and 2024. iSeeCars ranks the 2022 CX-5 second among small SUVs under $25,000, with an 8.0/10 reliability rating and a reported average used price of $24,204 on its 2026 page. A compact alternative in the under-$25,000 comparison. The ranking reflects iSeeCars’ method, not a guarantee about an individual car.
Subaru Forester Consumer Reports lists the 2021 and 2022–2024 Forester among its above-average used years. A compact option to consider when all-wheel-drive utility matters. Compare its price and condition with other compact SUVs in your area.
Toyota Highlander Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2022. iSeeCars identifies the 2020 Highlander as its under-$30,000 midsize SUV leader, with a 7.8/10 rating on its 2026 page. A larger family vehicle. Relative to a compact SUV, a budget buyer may have to weigh age, mileage, and purchase price carefully.
Lexus RX Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2021. A premium midsize alternative. Include it only if the purchase price and ownership costs fit your overall budget.
Toyota 4Runner Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2022. A midsize, body-on-frame option for buyers who specifically need its utility. It is not an economy-minded substitute for a compact crossover.
Lexus NX Consumer Reports lists selected years from 2015–2022. A smaller premium choice. Compare its purchase and upkeep costs with mainstream compact SUVs.
Honda HR-V iSeeCars identifies the 2025 HR-V as its under-$30,000 subcompact SUV leader, with an 8.4/10 rating on its 2026 page. A small-footprint option. Its result is specific to the subcompact segment and under-$30,000 price cap.
Subaru Crosstrek Edmunds’ 2026 roundup includes the 2023 Crosstrek and notes standard all-wheel drive and driver aids. A smaller SUV for buyers who value all-wheel drive and ground clearance over power or cargo room; Edmunds describes its base engine as underpowered.

Which used SUV is most reliable under $25,000?

In iSeeCars’ 2026 small-SUV results under $25,000, the 2021 Honda CR-V ranks first and the 2022 Mazda CX-5 second. Both receive an 8.0/10 reliability rating. The page reports average used prices of $24,788 for the CR-V and $24,204 for the CX-5; these are publisher-reported snapshots, not current quotes for a specific area or listing. That comparison is useful if you are shopping for a small or compact SUV, but it does not settle which is the better buy for you. A lower-priced example with incomplete maintenance records may be a weaker choice than a better-kept vehicle listed for more.

Which used SUV is most reliable under $30,000?

iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$30,000 page names different leaders in different size segments: the 2025 Honda HR-V among subcompacts, the 2023 Honda CR-V among small/compact SUVs, and the 2020 Toyota Highlander among midsize SUVs. Their reported ratings are 8.4, 8.0, and 7.8, respectively. These are separate segment results, not an apples-to-apples ranking across all three vehicles. See the iSeeCars under-$30,000 SUV results.

What model year should you buy?

Start with a model year that appears in a year-specific reliability source, then see whether that exact vehicle is affordable and sound. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists selected 2015–2024 vehicles with above-average reliability in price columns. Because those columns matter, do not assume that every listed year belongs to the same budget tier.

J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability results offer a different kind of evidence: the study draws on responses from more than 80,000 verified owners about problems experienced during the preceding 12 months in three-year-old vehicles. It named the 2022 Toyota RAV4 the Compact SUV winner. This is useful context about recent dependability, but it does not establish how a much older or poorly maintained used example will perform. J.D. Power explains its dependability awards and ratings methodology.

  1. Set your out-the-door ceiling. Leave room for taxes, registration, insurance, and any immediate maintenance rather than spending the entire budget on the asking price.
  2. Compare like with like. Check local examples with similar model years, mileage, trims, and condition. A published average or segment rank is not a local valuation.
  3. Review the vehicle history. Check for reported damage, title issues, ownership changes, and service entries. A clean history report is useful, but it is not a mechanical inspection.
  4. Ask for maintenance records. Look for evidence that routine service was done and investigate gaps or repeated repairs. Condition and upkeep matter even when the model year has favorable reliability evidence.
  5. Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific vehicle before purchase, especially if records are incomplete or the listing has signs of damage or neglect.
  6. Choose for your actual use. A subcompact such as the HR-V or Crosstrek prioritizes a smaller footprint; compact choices such as the CR-V, RAV4, CX-5, Forester, and NX serve a different space-and-cost balance; the Highlander, RX, and 4Runner are midsize alternatives.

What these reliability rankings can—and cannot—tell you

  • They can help narrow the search. Year-specific lists and segment rankings identify candidates worth comparing.
  • They are not interchangeable. Consumer Reports’ member-survey history, J.D. Power owner-reported dependability, Edmunds’ synthesis, and iSeeCars’ rankings use different evidence and methods.
  • They do not predict every repair. No cited score or award guarantees remaining service life or establishes the condition of a used vehicle for sale.
  • They do not make the list a universal top ten. SUV size, price ceiling, and use differ, so the right shortlist depends on the buyer.
