7 Underrated European Classic Cars to Consider Buying Now

Seven European classics—from the Porsche 912 to the Alfa Romeo 2000 Veloce—offer distinctive character, but condition and ownership costs matter more than a headline guide value.

Seven European classics stand out in Hagerty’s recent UK market coverage for combining distinctive driving character with more approachable guide values than some better-known alternatives. They are not a definitive Europe-wide top ten, and “underrated” is a value judgment—not a promise of appreciation. The prices below are UK guide snapshots, not guaranteed sale prices; local markets, condition and specification can change the calculation.

What “underrated” means—and what these prices tell you

Here, underrated means a car offers an appealing mix of driving character and ownership interest relative to its price and reputation. Hagerty’s Bull Market selections are annual value-and-driveability picks, not forecasts that every car will rise. The 2026 list says its data were correct as of 11 January 2026 and uses a collectability score based on more than 20 weighted factors (Hagerty’s 2026 Bull Market list).

The figures below are UK Hagerty Price Guide values for specified variants and condition bands. A guide value is not a quote for a particular car or evidence of what it will sell for. Hagerty’s 2025 UK analysis covered more than 3,000 models and drew on insured values, public and dealer sales, and other data; compare like-for-like and check recent local transactions (Hagerty’s 2025 Bull Market list; Hagerty’s 2025 UK market analysis). Nearly 80% of values in its UK guide had fallen or remained static in 2025, and only its Hot Hatch and RADwood UK indices showed meaningful growth compared with December 2024. That is a reminder to buy for the car, not a projected return.

The selection spans older classics and modern classics, including cars from the 1990s and 2000s. The source evidence is strongest for the UK, so these are candidates to investigate rather than a ranking of bargains across Europe.

Which classic European cars are still good value?

1. Porsche 912 (1965–69)

The 912 has much of the early 911’s body, interior, suspension and electrical architecture, paired with a four-cylinder engine. That gives it a different character from a six-cylinder 911, while retaining the early car’s shape and layout. Hagerty’s 2025 UK list puts an excellent-condition (#2) example at £57,800, down from a mid-2022 peak of £60,620. These are condition-defined guide values, not sale guarantees. Most UK examples are left-hand drive imports; right-hand-drive cars command a premium, so compare steering side and originality as well as condition.

2. Alfa Romeo 147 GTA (2002–05)

A compact hatchback with Alfa Romeo’s 3.2-litre Busso V6, the 147 GTA offers a characterful alternative to more familiar performance classics. Hagerty’s 2025 UK guide gives it a #2 value of £16,100, while the best advertised examples in the same coverage were in the mid-£20,000s. Guide value and asking price are different measures, and neither establishes the price a car will actually sell for. The standard differential struggled to transmit the engine’s power; some cars have been upgraded with aftermarket Quaife or Q2 differentials. Inspect the sills closely: owner Alex Leathley’s specific advice, quoted by Hagerty, is “You have to check the sills aren’t bent,” which can happen through improper jacking.

3. Maserati Ghibli Cup and the Biturbo family

The Ghibli Cup brings Gandini styling, high specific output and rarity to the wider Biturbo family. Hagerty reports that 26 UK Ghibli Cup cars were built, with 23 believed to survive. Its 2025 list gives a Ghibli Cup-equivalent value of £36,800, while base Biturbos with middling mileage were described as available below £10,000. Those are very different versions and condition propositions; the lower figure does not make a base car an equivalent substitute for a Cup. Maintenance can be costly, some parts are scarce, and certain engine work may require removing the engine. As Hagerty writer Nathan Chadwick advises, “When buying one of these cars, work out what you need to replace and factor the price of those parts into the deal.”

4. Peugeot 106 Series 1 Rallye (1991–96)

The early Rallye’s 1.3-litre engine was designed for homologation, and its straightforward mechanicals make it an engaging lightweight classic. Hagerty’s 2025 UK list puts an excellent-condition (#2) Series 1 at £12,400—about 45% below the 205 GTI 1.9 in its comparison. That relative gap is not proof that either model is mispriced. Check for corrosion and modifications, and assess originality: standard airboxes can be hard to find. Hagerty also flags difficult wheel-bearing work and gearbox sensitivity to the correct oil. A cheap car needing scarce or time-consuming repairs may be poor value.

5. Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk II

The Mk II GTI pairs practical hatchback usability with the brisk, nimble character Hagerty highlights in its 2026 UK list. The guide gives an 8-valve example a value of £15,300 and a 16-valve one £16,600; its cited Mk I GTI 1600 comparison is £21,500. These figures are guide values, not direct comparisons between cars of identical condition or specification. Identify which engine version you are considering, then weigh originality and condition against the Mk I premium rather than assuming every Mk II is a bargain.

6. Porsche 911 (996) C2 3.4 coupe

The 996 is a way into a water-cooled 911 with a 3.4-litre flat-six and everyday usability. Hagerty’s 2026 UK list gives a C2 3.4 coupe a guide value of £17,800. It also identifies intermediate-shaft bearings, bore scoring and coolant pipes as issues buyers should investigate. These are inspection prompts, not evidence that every car has a fault. Prioritize documented, meticulous specialist maintenance, investigate the car’s mileage and matching-numbers status, and have a Porsche specialist assess its mechanical history and condition before purchase.

7. Alfa Romeo 2000 Veloce

The 1970s 2000 Veloce offers twin carburettors, a usable interior, larger tyres and a larger boot than earlier roundtail cars. Hagerty’s 2026 UK list gives an excellent-condition example a guide value of £21,200. Verify the actual car’s condition and specification: a guide figure cannot account for the quality of an individual restoration, mechanical work or corrosion repairs.

What should I check before buying a classic car?

Price the whole ownership proposition, not just the purchase. Hagerty’s buying guidance gives servicing, insurance, tax and MOT as costs that can consume £1,000 annually before other maintenance, depending on the car. Treat that as a historical guide example, not a universal current budget. Get insurance quotes and investigate parts supply and club or specialist support for the exact model and variant before committing.

  1. Establish the car’s identity and history. Confirm the variant, specification and available documentation. Ask the seller about length of ownership, maintenance, use and crash history; compare the answers with records and the car itself.
  2. Inspect known model-specific weak points. Look for bent sills on a 147 GTA; corrosion and non-original parts on a 106 Rallye; and documented specialist attention to the 996’s identified mechanical concerns. For other models, ask a marque specialist what to inspect on that specific example.
  3. Get an independent inspection. Hagerty recommends using a specialist or MOT station where appropriate. An inspection is especially valuable when a repair could involve scarce parts, substantial labor or engine removal.
  4. Build a realistic first-year budget. Include the work the inspection identifies, parts, servicing, insurance and applicable taxes and testing costs. Use those estimates to negotiate or walk away—not an assumption that a classic will appreciate.

A general Haynes used car buying guide can help with general checks, but it is not a replacement for an inspection by someone familiar with the specific model.

Are classic cars a good investment?

Not reliably enough to make investment return the buying case. Hagerty’s lists select cars for value and driveability; they do not promise appreciation. The UK market evidence also varies by model and period: nearly 80% of guide values fell or stayed static in 2025, while only two of Hagerty’s UK indices showed meaningful growth against December 2024. A car can be enjoyable and still cost more to maintain than its value changes. Buy the example you want to drive, and treat any future price movement as uncertain.
