Among the documented individual-pair sales here, Michael Jordan’s game-worn Air Jordan XIII pair from the 1998 NBA Finals brought $2.2 million at Sotheby’s in April 2023. Those distinctions matter: the available results do not support a reliable ranking of ten individual pairs.
Why there is no defensible top 10 of individual pairs
A list titled “10 most valuable” implies ten comparable sales. The documented results do not provide that: they include a six-shoe collection sale as well as individual pairs, and the collection’s price was not broken down by shoe. Treating every shoe in that collection as an independently sold pair—or assigning each a share of the total—would misrepresent the auction.
The figures below are therefore the major documented results, not a complete ten-place ranking. They distinguish the collection from individual pairs and identify what each price represents.
Major documented Air Jordan auction results
| Result | What sold | Sale and context |
|---|---|---|
| $8,032,800 | The Dynasty Collection: six single-foot shoes, Air Jordans #6, #7, #8, #11, #12 and #14, sold together | Sotheby’s, 2 February 2024. The shoes represented championship-clinching games in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998. Guinness World Records lists the result as the most expensive game-worn sneaker collection sold at auction. Guinness World Records; Associated Press |
| $2,200,000 | A game-worn Air Jordan XIII pair | Sotheby’s, 11 April 2023. Jordan wore the pair in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals, then signed and gave it to a ballboy. Guinness World Records lists $2.2 million as the record for worn sneakers sold at auction on its consulted entry; that record description is date-sensitive. Guinness World Records; The Washington Post |
| $560,000 | A game-worn, autographed 1985 Air Jordan 1 pair | Sotheby’s, 17 May 2020. Sotheby’s described the shoes as materially different from public-release pairs: they were Mid rather than High or Low, with altered Swoosh proportions, different material and red laces. Sotheby’s |
| $482,600 | A signed, game-worn 1996 Air Jordan XI pair | Sold at Sotheby’s; reported by Sneaker Freaker on 16 April 2024. The pair had been given to a Seattle SuperSonics ballboy and his friend after Game 5 of the Finals. Sneaker Freaker |
Was the $8 million sale one pair or a collection?
It was a collection: six single-foot shoes sold together as one lot. Sotheby’s did not disclose an individual price for each shoe. The $8,032,800 is the collection’s result, not the price of one pair, and there is no supported per-shoe or per-pair allocation. The Associated Press reported the auction result, while Guinness World Records identifies the lot as a six-shoe collection. Associated Press; Guinness World Records

Why these Air Jordans command exceptional prices
These results concern specific collectible objects, not ordinary retail sneakers that happen to share an Air Jordan model name or colorway. The documented sales combine factors such as game use, Jordan’s signature, a connection to a significant game, unusual player-specific details and a traceable ownership history. The sources do not establish a universal formula for valuing a pair.
Game use and provenance
A link to a named game and a documented chain of ownership can distinguish an auction collectible from an otherwise similar shoe. For example, the XIII pair was connected to Game 2 of the 1998 Finals and its transfer from Jordan to a ballboy; the 1996 XI pair was linked to Game 5 and its recipients. Those histories are part of what buyers were bidding on, not merely details about the model.

Signatures and unusual construction
A signature may add to a shoe’s significance when it is tied to a compelling provenance. In the 1985 Jordan 1 sale, Sotheby’s also highlighted construction and design differences from the pairs released to the public. A retail version of the same model is not interchangeable with that game-worn, autographed example.

Before comparing two headline figures, check what the auction lot contained and how the reported price was calculated. Sotheby’s 2025 “Court Classics” catalogue included categories such as player samples and vintage retail models, which are not the same category as game-worn pairs. Sotheby’s says results displayed for that sale include its premiums and exclude applicable taxes and costs. Sotheby’s

- Real and synthetic leather adds durability and structure to the upper.
- Nike Air technology absorbs impact for cushioning with every step.
- Foam midsole adds lightweight cushioning.
- Rubber outsole gives you durable traction.
- Lot size: individual pair, single shoe or multi-item collection.
- Object type: game-worn pair, player sample, vintage retail shoe or unworn collectible.
- Price convention: hammer price or total including buyer’s premium; also note whether taxes and other costs are excluded.
- Provenance: documented game, signature, authentication and ownership history.
- Sale details: auction date and currency, so results are compared on a like-for-like basis.
Without consistent rules across all those points, a ranked list can create false precision. In particular, a collection total should not be compared as though it were the sale price of a single pair.
