A car with a high odometer reading may still have useful life ahead, but no model name can guarantee that a particular used car will keep going. The available current evidence does not verify a definitive list of ten cars, so naming ten as proven picks would be misleading. What it does show is how to evaluate high-mileage cars: compare the specific model year and configuration, check its history and condition, and budget for maintenance and repairs.
What the evidence says about cars with 200,000 miles
Cars can regularly reach 200,000 miles and beyond, according to Consumer Reports’ high-mileage guidance. That is a possibility, not a forecast for every vehicle. An odometer reading by itself does not tell you how much useful life remains; maintenance, condition, model year, and the way the car was used all matter.
Consumer Reports’ analysis, “12 Long-Lasting Cars Proven to Get to 200,000 Miles and Beyond,” updated June 9, 2026, identifies models that most often reached 200,000 miles or more without problems reported in the prior 12 months, based on member surveys. Its accessible results do not provide the complete model list. The analysis also cautions that reliability and other ratings can vary by model year. Why a historical ten-car list is not a current buying guide
Consumer Reports reported an iSeeCars study in 2014 that analyzed listings for 30 million advertised vehicles from the preceding year. It ranked models from 1981–2010 by the share of advertised examples that had passed 200,000 miles. The ten models, in order, were:

How to assess a high-mileage car before buying
Compare the exact year and configuration
Use model-level reliability information as a starting point, then narrow the comparison to the particular year and configuration for sale. Check that the vehicle’s safety equipment and features meet your needs; a long-lived reputation does not settle whether a specific car is a suitable or safe choice. Review more than one history report
Ask for the service records and review vehicle-history information from multiple sources. Consumer Reports recommends checking more than one history report because a single source may omit information. Look for gaps, inconsistent mileage records, and evidence of regular maintenance rather than treating a clean report as proof that the car is trouble-free. Arrange an assessment of the actual vehicle
Have the specific car assessed before purchase, including its mechanical condition and expected near-term needs. A code reader can reveal diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot establish overall condition or predict remaining service life on its own. Give inspection findings more weight than a model’s reputation.

Estimate costs against your budget
Compare the purchase price with likely maintenance and repair needs, and leave room in your budget for unexpected work. Expensive maintenance items may come due at or shortly after 100,000 miles, but that does not mean the car is necessarily at the end of its life. A lower-priced vehicle can still be costly if it needs major repairs soon after purchase. Consumer Reports’ advice on high-mileage cars

- Follow the owner’s manual. Use the maintenance schedule and fluid specifications for that exact vehicle; oil formulations and service intervals are not universal.
- Keep records. Save receipts and note completed maintenance so you can track what is due and show the car’s history to a future buyer.
- Address small problems early. A developing issue can become more expensive if ignored. Consumer Reports chief mechanic John Ibbotson describes the trade-off as “pay now or pay more later.”

Choose the car that fits your use, not just its mileage reputation
Space, comfort, fuel needs, safety equipment, and the kind of driving you do belong in the decision alongside reliability and repair costs. A model that often reaches a high odometer reading may still be the wrong fit—or a poor buy in weak condition. Compare the candidate cars you can actually inspect, and choose based on the evidence for those specific vehicles.
