For UK shoppers, the most useful way to choose Fairtrade tea is to check the certification on the specific pack, then look for additional evidence such as organic certification or stated support for growers. Fairtrade UK’s 2026 guide names products from seven of the ten brands below; the other three are included because the Fairtrade UK directory describes relevant tea ranges or practices. This is an evidence-based shortlist, not a ranking or a claim that every product from each brand is certified.
How to read the claims on a tea pack
Tea supply chains can involve many players, making it difficult to infer a worker’s conditions or a farm’s environmental impact from a brand name alone. Fairtrade says it works to improve fairness and transparency and has developed living-wage benchmarks for tea plantation workers in Kenya, India, Sri Lanka and Malawi. Those benchmarks are reference points; they do not establish that each worker is currently paid a living wage. Fairtrade’s overview of tea explains its work in the sector.
Certification scope matters. Under Fairtrade’s 2025–2026 sourced-ingredient guidance, all of an ingredient designated as Fairtrade must be sourced on Fairtrade terms. Tea may use mass balance, however, so the mark alone does not establish that the tea in a particular pack is physically traceable to a specific certified farm. Read the product wording and mark carefully; do not extend a claim about one ingredient or product to an entire company. See Fairtrade’s sourced-ingredient guidance.
Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance are separate certification schemes, not interchangeable versions of one seal. Rainforest Alliance describes tea-farm practices that include chemical use, treatment of workers and their families, soil protection and waste recycling. Those topics are useful comparison points, but a claim under one scheme should not be attributed to the other. Rainforest Alliance’s tea certification overview describes its approach.

A certification is evidence of a defined standard, not a guarantee of ideal conditions. Ethical Consumer notes scrutiny of certified plantations and cautions that no certification guarantees responsible sourcing. Fairtrade Finder also says its directory is incomplete and may rarely be inaccurate. Treat directories as starting points, then check the current package and product information.
Ten UK brands and the evidence to check
Fairtrade Foundation’s guide, published 22 April 2026, says more than 400 Fairtrade-certified tea products are available in the UK. That is a UK product count, not a count of brands. The products below are examples named in that guide; names, ranges, labels and stock may change, so verify the current pack and availability.

The product examples and brand descriptions come from the Fairtrade UK tea directory and product guide. They establish useful leads, not an independent, like-for-like sustainability audit of all ten brands. For the listed retailers and brands, the directory does not substantiate every comparison axis—such as farm-level environmental performance, packaging impact or worker outcomes—equally.
Choose a product, not just a brand name
- Find the exact tea and pack. Match the product name and format, such as bags, loose leaf, herbal infusion or iced tea, to the current listing and packaging.
- Check the mark and its scope. Confirm which ingredient or product the Fairtrade claim covers. Do not assume a brand’s certified product makes its whole range Fairtrade.
- Look for additional, specific claims. Organic certification, a stated smallholder programme or a named environmental practice can add useful evidence when the claim applies to that product or supply chain.
- Separate the schemes. If a product shows Rainforest Alliance rather than Fairtrade, assess it on that scheme’s own standards; do not treat the seals as equivalent.
- Recheck availability and wording. Product names and stock change, and a directory entry may not reflect the pack currently on sale.
What certification can—and cannot—tell you
Fair Trade USA’s shopper guide reports that worldwide tea production was 6.6 million metric tons in 2024. That global production figure gives context for the scale of the supply chain; it says nothing by itself about an individual brand’s performance. The same guide names US-market examples including Just Ice Tea, Numi Organic Tea, DAVIDsTEA, TAZO, Arbor Teas, Sarilla, Friendship Organics, 365 Whole Foods Market and Allegro Tea. They are not substitutes for the UK-focused examples above, and Fair Trade USA and Fairtrade International labels should not be treated as interchangeable. Fair Trade USA’s tea shopper guide provides its market context.

For a more informed comparison, use certification as a starting filter and then seek product-specific evidence about sourcing, worker standards, farming and packaging. Where a brand or directory does not establish a claim, regard it as unverified rather than assuming either good or poor performance. Neither the directory entries nor the product examples provide comparable, independently verified sustainability scores for all ten brands.
