10 Best Meal Delivery Services for 2026: Kits, Prepared Meals, and What They Cost

Marley Spoon, Home Chef, EveryPlate and CookUnity serve different needs. Compare meal formats and full delivered costs before choosing a subscription.

There isn’t one best meal delivery service for every household. If you want to cook, Marley Spoon is a strong meal-kit pick; Home Chef offers flexibility for families; EveryPlate is a budget candidate; and CookUnity is a leading option when you want prepared meals you only need to heat. The right choice depends on how much cooking you’ll do, the full delivered price, and whether the service covers your address and dietary needs.

The distinction matters: meal kits send ingredients and recipes, while prepared-meal services send food that is ready to heat. The comparison below draws on recent editorial testing and current company information; prices and operating details can change, so check your ZIP code and checkout total before subscribing.

How to choose the best meal delivery service

Start with effort, then compare cost. A meal kit can reduce planning and grocery shopping, but you still cook. A prepared meal trades that cooking for reheating and usually arrives as an individual portion. Home Chef spans both ends with conventional kits as well as Oven-Ready and Fast & Fresh options. Bon Appétit’s 2026 guide puts the distinction simply: “A meal kit is to a meal delivery service as a square is to a rectangle—which is to say, every meal kit is a meal delivery service, but not every meal delivery service is a meal kit.”

  • Choose a kit if you want to cook and control the final preparation.
  • Choose prepared meals if minimizing hands-on time is more important than cooking.
  • Compare the delivered order, not just the advertised per-serving price. Include shipping, add-ons, the number of servings you’ll actually eat, and the price after any introductory offer ends.
  • Check fit before subscribing: weekly menu, household size, diet and allergy disclosures, delivery coverage, skip or cancellation deadline, and storage window.

Recent reviewers do not agree on a single winner because they make different trade-offs. WIRED’s September 2026 update names picks by use case after its author, Matthew Korfhage, tested major services over two years. Bon Appétit and NBC Select also divide their recommendations by format and need. These are publication judgments, not a controlled head-to-head ranking.

CookUnity Prepared meals with minimal cooking Chilled, single-serving meals ready to heat. Plans range from 4 to 16 meals weekly, according to CookUnity. CookUnity lists delivery at $9.99 or $11.99 depending on ZIP code.

What each top pick is best at

Marley Spoon: for people who want to cook

WIRED and Bon Appétit both choose Marley Spoon as their leading meal-kit option. That makes it a sensible place to start if your priority is a cooking experience rather than a heat-and-eat dinner. Bon Appétit’s guide puts typical recipe preparation at 30–40 minutes, so it is not the fit for someone seeking near-zero kitchen time.

Home Chef: for flexibility across a household

Home Chef has more than one level of effort: standard kits, Oven-Ready meals, Fast & Fresh options, and quicker recipes. Its official menu lists 35+ weekly choices and protein swaps, which can help when household members want different meals. The advertised starting price is not the complete bill; check shipping and your selected plan at checkout.

  • 【Leakproof & Stackable】: These food prep containers come with tight sealed lids, you can easily stack them and won’t worry that the food would leaks or spills.

  • 【50 Value Package】: This value package includes 50 pack (100-Piece) 24 oz meal prep containers with lids. They are the perfect choice for your daily meal preparation.

EveryPlate: for keeping kit costs down

EveryPlate is a budget-oriented pick in both WIRED and NBC Select. Its listed plan structure covers two, four, or six people and three to five meals each week, and the company says most recipes take about 30 minutes with basic kitchen tools. Calculate the box total: the current listed $5.99-per-serving figure is accompanied by $10.99 shipping, and promotional prices vary by plan.

Green Chef and Sunbasket: for specific food preferences

Green Chef is highlighted by WIRED for dietary needs and by Bon Appétit for organic ingredients. Sunbasket is Bon Appétit’s healthy-kit pick. Those editorial labels can help narrow a search, but they do not establish that a meal is medically appropriate or free from cross-contact. Check the ingredients, menu filters, and allergen statements for the specific meals you intend to order.

CookUnity: for ready-to-heat dinners

CookUnity is a prepared-meal service, not a meal kit: it ships chilled dishes with heating instructions. WIRED and Bon Appétit select it for prepared meals, and NBC Select also names it its best prepared-meal option. The company lists weekly plans of four, six, eight, 12, or 16 meals, generally one serving per meal. Delivery is listed at $9.99 or $11.99 based on ZIP code.

Other useful matches

Factor is another prepared option; NBC Select highlights its variety. For a lower-cost kit alternative, Bon Appétit picks Dinnerly, though its cited guide does not state a current price. Purple Carrot is the plant-based choice in Bon Appétit’s guide and NBC Select’s vegan-cook pick. HelloFresh is a conventional kit option with portioned ingredients and step-by-step recipes; its US delivery excludes Alaska and Hawaii according to its official page.

How to compare the real weekly cost

Per-serving prices are only a starting point. Your actual food budget depends on how many meals you order, the number of people eating, shipping, add-ons, and whether the displayed rate applies after an introductory promotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the plan you would genuinely use. Match servings and meals to your household rather than comparing a two-person plan with a larger order.
  2. Add mandatory delivery charges. EveryPlate currently lists a flat $10.99 shipping fee. CookUnity lists $9.99 or $11.99 depending on ZIP code. Other charges should be checked at the address-specific checkout.
  3. Separate introductory offers from recurring prices. Promotions vary by plan and can change. Use the post-promotion price when deciding whether the subscription fits your monthly budget.
  4. Compare cost per dinner you will eat. Divide the full box total by the number of servings you expect to use. A lower headline price is not a saving if portions or delivery frequency do not suit you.
  5. Account for waste and convenience. A prepared single serving may be more expensive per meal but can avoid unused ingredients or takeout. A kit may offer more cooking value if you would otherwise buy groceries for the same recipe.

Diet, allergies, and delivery coverage

Menu labels and filters are not a substitute for reading meal-specific ingredients and allergen information. EveryPlate says its facilities handle common allergens and advises people with severe allergies to use caution. That is important for anyone who cannot safely rely on a general dietary filter.

Neither statement guarantees service at every address. Enter your ZIP code before committing, and check the delivery day and cutoff for the specific box.

Storage, scheduling, and cancellation

Refrigerated shelf life

For CookUnity, the company says each meal carries a use-by date and describes typical refrigerated shelf life as about 3–7 days. NBC Select gives a typical range of about 4–7 days. Use the date on the individual label, keep meals refrigerated, and plan your order around when you will eat them.

Skipping or canceling a delivery

Subscription services can have deadlines before the next box is prepared. HelloFresh’s US page says a pause or cancellation must be made by 11:59 p.m. Pacific five days before the next delivery to avoid that charge. Check the service’s current account terms and cutoff before relying on a skip; operational rules and promotions can change.

Which service should you choose?

Choose Marley Spoon if you want a meal kit that reviewers favor for cooking; Home Chef if you value a wider mix of preparation styles; EveryPlate if you want a lower advertised kit price and can account for shipping; Green Chef or Sunbasket if their current menus match your preferences; or CookUnity if reheating is the level of effort you want. If you are comparing Dinnerly, Factor, Purple Carrot, or HelloFresh, use the same checks: fit, full checkout cost, current menu, delivery coverage, and terms.

For a personal-finance decision, the best service is the one whose recurring delivered cost you can sustain and whose portions and schedule replace food spending you would otherwise make. Treat a first-box discount as a trial price, not the subscription’s long-term budget.
