Where is the reported 1,000-tonne gold deposit?
The Wangu goldfield is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, China. On November 23, 2024, Xinhua reported that the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province had announced a superlarge deposit there. The report described exploration using three-dimensional geological modelling and noted gold finds from drilling in peripheral areas. How much gold was reported in Hunan?
The headline number and the shallower figure refer to different depth scopes. According to the 2024 report, more than 1,000 tonnes was estimated within the area explored to 3,000 metres, while more than 40 detected veins within 2,000 metres were reported to contain 300 tonnes.
- To 3,000 metres: more than 1,000 tonnes estimated.
- Within 2,000 metres: 300 tonnes reported across more than 40 detected veins.
These figures should not be merged: the 300-tonne figure is not the full 1,000-tonne estimate, and the deeper estimate is not a statement that all the gold occurs in the shallower veins. The source describes exploration estimates, not a final independently classified reserve. It also quotes prospecting expert Chen Rulin saying, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” That observation does not establish the deposit’s average grade, the amount that can be recovered, or its commercial viability. Is Wangu the world’s largest gold deposit?
That global ranking is not established by the available reports. A later official Chinese report, published by the China Geological Survey on November 14, 2025, identifies Dandonggou in Liaodong as China’s first thousand-tonne-class deposit and the largest single gold deposit discovered domestically since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It does not call Dandonggou the world’s largest. China Geological Survey report.
The Dandonggou figures also use a different scope and reporting basis from Wangu’s 2024 depth-based estimate, so the numbers alone do not make a like-for-like global ranking:

Ore tonnage and contained gold metal are different quantities: Dandonggou’s 2.586 billion tonnes is the mass of ore, while 1,444.49 tonnes is its reported gold-metal content. Neither figure is mined output. The China Geological Survey describes Dandonggou as low-grade and says development-use economic analysis had been completed with expected benefits; that does not mean a mine is operating or that the reported metal has been produced. What did the 2024 report’s 600-billion-yuan valuation mean?
Xinhua reported a value of 600 billion yuan, then approximately US$83 billion, for the Wangu estimate in 2024. This is a contemporaneous valuation quoted in that report—not a current gold-price calculation, independently verified asset value, or forecast of revenue from recoverable or mined gold. Does a 1,000-tonne estimate mean the gold can be mined?
No. An exploration estimate describes gold thought to be present within a defined geological scope. It does not, by itself, show how much can be extracted, whether extraction would be profitable, or whether production has begun. The Wangu report supplies no evidence that its estimated gold is being produced or that the entire estimate is economically recoverable.
