High Plains Processing held its grand opening south of Mitchell on September 9, 2025. The roughly $500 million facility began processing soybeans the following month, according to an industry report published in December. Its 35-million-bushel annual capacity is a design target—not a measure of how much it was processing as it ramped up.
What does the Mitchell soybean plant produce?
High Plains Processing turns soybeans into soybean meal, used in animal feed, and soybean oil. The oil can be refined on-site into vegetable oil or renewable diesel, according to South Dakota Searchlight.
The facility was built to switch among multiple oilseed crops. That capability does not establish which crops it is currently processing; the available operating report describes soybean processing but does not specify its current crop mix.
When did High Plains Processing start operating?
The plant’s September 9, 2025 event was its grand opening, not the start of crushing. Processing Journal reported on December 11, 2025, that soybean processing began in October and production was ramping toward the plant’s annual goal. That report does not establish current throughput in 2026.

How much can the plant process?
South Dakota Searchlight reported a designed soybean-crushing capacity of about 35 million bushels a year. For scale, the publication, citing USDA data, reported that South Dakota produced about 238 million bushels in the prior year. These figures describe capacity and statewide production, respectively; they do not mean all of the state’s crop is available to or processed by this plant.
High Plains Processing is managed by South Dakota Soybean Processors. A December 2025 Processing Journal report identifies BP Products North America Inc., a BP plc subsidiary, as the joint venture partner.

What could the plant mean for farmers and Mitchell?
Company representatives and local coverage presented the facility as a nearby source of soybean demand that could support markets and reduce transportation costs. Those are expected benefits, not independently measured outcomes. No post-opening measurement in the cited coverage establishes changes in farm prices, farm income, transportation costs, tax receipts or realized employment impacts.
At the September 2025 opening, Mitchell Now reported estimates of 85 full-time jobs and about $5.5 million in annual payroll. These were announced estimates, not verified current employment or payroll figures.

South Dakota Soybean Processors CEO Tom Kersting told South Dakota Searchlight, “If it wasn’t for demand sources like this facility, it’d be very, very tough out there.” He also said, “There’s great demand for soybean oil from the renewable fuels industry.” Those comments explain the company’s rationale for the investment; they are not independent assessments of the plant’s effects.
