What happened on Polymarket
On October 18, 2024, Gizmodo reported that four accounts had placed roughly $30 million in pro-Trump bets over recent weeks and that the buying had shifted the winner-market odds toward Trump. Gizmodo relayed the Wall Street Journal’s account that Arkham Intelligence assessed the accounts were probably controlled by one person. Those are reported account links and market movements, not direct proof of wallet ownership presented by Gizmodo.
The $30 million figure describes reported stakes across accounts and pro-Trump markets. It is not a verified cost to move odds by a particular amount, nor evidence that the full sum went into one contract.
What the odds showed—and what they did not
Polymarket contract prices are market prices at a particular time. Orders can move them, especially when they meet limited available liquidity. A price movement by itself cannot establish why someone traded, whether the movement was durable, or whether voters were affected.

These are dated snapshots, not current odds. The contracts asked different questions and even pointed to different leaders in that snapshot. Neither price is a poll result or, by itself, a validated forecast.
What later reporting said about the trader
Later reporting described the accounts as belonging to one French trader using the pseudonym Théo. Fortune’s November 2, 2024 account relayed statements from his interview with the Wall Street Journal and said Polymarket had contacted him. Fortune characterized him as having extensive trading experience and a financial-services background.

Fortune reported that Théo said he was seeking financial profit. It attributed to him the statement, “My intent is just making money,” and reported his email denial: “I have absolutely no political agenda.” These are his stated explanations, not independently established motives. Fortune also said it could not verify his claim that he used his own money.
According to Fortune, he built the position with many smaller transactions to avoid pushing up his own entry price. The outlet reported that account Theo4 made more than 450 bets during one 10-hour period, ranging from $5 to tens of thousands of dollars. That account of trading is not proof that the odds were deliberately faked or that the trades had a political purpose.

Why headline volume needs context
Volume figures can describe different kinds of activity. In a 2026 preprint, Tsang and Yang explain that Polymarket’s on-chain records can include matched exchange trades as well as share minting, burning, and conversion. Aggregating all such flows as if they were conventional trading turnover can overstate how much was actually traded between market participants.

These study figures cover a different period and use different measurement concepts from the reported $30 million position; they should not be compared as though they were the same measure. The preprint also says its analysis of the October large-account episode relies on public reporting rather than direct identification of the trader’s wallets.

What the episode establishes about manipulation
The reports support a narrower conclusion: large pro-Trump buying was associated with a contemporaneous shift in the market’s displayed odds. They do not establish that the trader intended to manipulate prices, that the market’s odds were otherwise accurate, or that the trades changed anyone’s vote. Account attribution and motive remain claims attributed to media reports and the trader, rather than independently settled facts.

On January 3, 2022, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced an order and settlement with Blockratize, Inc., doing business as Polymarket. The agency said the company offered off-exchange event-based binary options contracts without designation as a designated contract market or registration as a swap execution facility. The order imposed a $1.4 million civil penalty and required the wind-down of noncompliant markets. That historical enforcement action does not, on its own, establish the present legal status of every Polymarket product.

Polymarket’s transparency page describes Polymarket US and Polymarket International as separate platforms operating under different rules. It says users in restricted jurisdictions, including the United States, may not trade on the international platform, and that manipulation, wash trading, spoofing, and self-dealing are prohibited and monitored. These are the platform’s descriptions of its own policies, not an independent audit; access rules and legal treatment may change.
