How to Make Money as a Student: 101 Side Hustle Ideas

A practical menu of 101 ways students might earn money, with steps for comparing fit, checking Work-Study, and avoiding common legal and scam pitfalls.

The most practical way to make money as a student depends on what you can reliably offer: scheduled hours, a skill, or time for occasional tasks. For a predictable paycheck, start with campus or local employment; to fit work around a changing class schedule, consider tutoring or a small service; if you need cash quickly, selling items you already own may be simpler than building a new side business. Check age and local rules, costs, and the actual terms before accepting work—none of these options guarantees a particular income.

Choose a kind of work that fits your situation

Path What it can look like What to check first
Employee job Campus dining, library, retail, event shifts, or a local part-time role Eligibility, schedule, pay, hours, and whether the employer can accommodate exams and classes
Independent service Tutoring, editing, design, or another service arranged directly with a client Whether you have the skill and equipment, how you will find clients, payment terms, and whether you are actually an employee or self-employed
Task-based or platform work Short assignments or services arranged through a platform Age and location eligibility, platform terms, fees, expenses, payment timing, and tax recordkeeping
Selling personal belongings Selling clothes, books, or other items you no longer need Safe transactions, shipping or meeting costs, marketplace rules, and whether you are selling personal items or operating a business

Use the ideas below as a menu, not as promises of demand, easy money, or a certain rate. Your school, community, age, skills, transport, and available time determine which are realistic. Federal Student Aid says Work-Study can provide work experience, but what you learn depends on the role.

101 student money-making ideas, grouped by fit

Ideas involving an employer are marked employee-style; services arranged directly with customers are generally self-employed-style, though the actual legal classification depends on the working relationship. Some activities may be unsuitable or unlawful for minors, and local rules can differ. Confirm the requirements before you start.

Scheduled work and campus opportunities

  1. Apply for a Federal Work-Study position, if you have an award and your school has an opening.
  2. Work in a campus library. Employee-style.
  3. Work in campus dining or a café. Employee-style.
  4. Staff a campus bookstore. Employee-style.
  5. Help with campus event setup or guest check-in. Employee-style.

  10. Apply to a local shop or retail store. Employee-style.
  11. Work at a restaurant or café near school. Employee-style.
  12. Look for seasonal retail shifts during school breaks. Employee-style.
  13. Apply for seasonal work at a local attraction or recreation venue. Employee-style.
  14. Staff a community or sports event. Employee-style.
  15. Apply for a permitted youth job, if you meet the age and occupation rules. Employee-style.

  15. Make custom labels, stickers, or other small designs if you have suitable tools.

Resale and low-commitment experiments

  15. Try a small freelance project in a skill you already use, with scope and payment agreed in writing.
  16. Offer a one-time workshop in a subject or craft you can teach competently.

How to compare your options before committing

Pick two or three ideas and assess them against the same questions. A flexible job can still be a poor fit if it consumes study time, requires costly equipment, or leaves payment unclear.

  • Schedule fit: Can you work during class weeks as well as exam periods? Ask about required shifts, deadlines, and the process for changing availability.
  • Eligibility: Check age, state and local rules, school requirements, and platform terms before investing time or money.
  • Predictability: An employee role usually has scheduled shifts; client or task work can depend on finding assignments. Ask how and when payment is made rather than assuming steady work.
  • Startup cost and risk: List any transport, equipment, supplies, fees, or insurance you actually need. Do not buy equipment or pay a platform simply because someone claims it will guarantee work.
  • Skills and experience: Prefer work you can do well and that may build useful experience, while keeping expectations about future benefits realistic.
  • Worker status and records: Keep the offer, payment terms, hours, income, and work-related expenses. The label on a contract does not alone decide whether you are an employee.

Federal Work-Study: how to check whether it fits

Federal Work-Study is need-based aid administered through participating schools. You must submit the FAFSA and receive a Work-Study award, but an award does not guarantee a job or funding in every year. Federal Student Aid states, “Work-study funding and jobs aren’t guaranteed each year.” Positions are limited and part time. Schools may arrange hours with academic progress in mind; students generally still need to find openings, apply, and interview.

  1. Submit the FAFSA and review your financial aid award to see whether Work-Study was offered.
  2. Contact your school’s financial aid or student employment office to confirm your award status, available positions, and application process.
  3. Ask the office about the role’s wage, hour limits, schedule, and paycheck timing before accepting.
  4. Apply for positions that fit your skills and class schedule. Some placements may be on campus; certain nonprofit placements can be in the community.

For most college and university student employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor says minimum-wage and overtime protections generally apply. It describes possible exceptions for certain graduate teaching assistants whose primary duty is teaching, some supervised research relationships, and residential assistants receiving room, board, or tuition benefits under specified conditions. The role and facts matter, so ask your school about the position rather than assuming every student job is treated alike.

Age and wage rules can change what is available

Federal youth rules restrict the hours and occupations available to workers younger than 16, and state law may be stricter. The Department of Labor lists tutoring among jobs permitted for 14- and 15-year-olds under federal conditions; that is not blanket permission for every tutoring arrangement or a substitute for checking state rules. For people 18 and older, the Department of Labor’s youth-rules page says federal youth provisions allow work on any job at any time, while other workplace requirements and state rules may still apply.

The Department of Labor’s adult youth-rules page gives $7.25 an hour as the federal minimum wage and notes that state rates may be higher. This is a federal baseline, not a prediction of student pay or a guarantee that every worker and job is covered. For covered, non-exempt employees, overtime is generally due after 40 hours in a workweek; special rules and exceptions can apply. Check current federal and state requirements for your situation.

Employee, freelancer, or gig worker? The label is not the test

A company cannot settle FLSA worker status simply by calling someone an independent contractor or issuing a Form 1099. The Department of Labor describes a multiple-factor “economic reality” assessment of the whole working relationship. Factors include opportunity for profit or loss, investment, permanence, control, whether the work is integral to the business, and skill and initiative. Its Fact Sheet 13 page also flags litigation concerning the 2024 rule and a proposed 2026 rule, so the applicable guidance can change; check the current Department of Labor material for your circumstances.

That classification question is separate from whether you have federal or state tax obligations. Gig and self-employment income can bring tax duties even when you are a student. Keep records of income and expenses and consult the IRS Gig Economy Tax Center and self-employment tax guidance for current rules that apply to you. Do not assume student status or a small amount of income automatically removes filing or payment obligations.

A one-week plan to get started

  1. Day 1: Write down the hours you can work in a normal week and the hours you need to protect for classes, commuting, sleep, and exams.
  2. Day 2: Check your school’s student-employment listings and, if relevant, ask the financial aid office whether you have a Work-Study award.
  3. Day 3: Choose one employee job to apply for and one low-cost skill or service you could offer without buying new equipment.
  4. Day 4: Verify age and local eligibility, actual pay or payment terms, schedule, expenses, and who is responsible for providing supplies.
  5. Day 5: Submit a focused application or make a small, clearly scoped offer to a person or organization you can verify.
  6. Day 6: Review any response for scam warning signs; do not pay to be hired or share sensitive information before verifying the employer.
  7. Day 7: Set up a simple record of hours, income, and expenses, then reassess whether the work fits your studies before taking on more.
