Those, too, are attributed accounts, not a verified measure of how often these outcomes occur or what passengers generally pay. How can you book an extra seat in advance?
Southwest’s online booking instructions say to book the number of seats needed as adults and enter “XS” in the extra-seat passenger’s middle-name field. The extra seat must be the second passenger in the booking.

- Choose the total number of seats, including the additional seat, as the number of adults.
- Enter the passenger’s details for the primary seat.

Booking the adjacent seat in advance follows Southwest’s recommendation and avoids relying on whether an adjacent seat remains available at the airport. The airline’s published policy does not promise that a complimentary seat will be available if you wait until travel day.

What if Southwest determines an extra seat is needed at the airport?
If you did not book an extra seat and Southwest determines one is needed, the airline says it will provide a complimentary seat only when an adjacent seat is available. AOL also quotes Grace Simpson describing an interaction with a supervisor: “The supervisor who approached me was clearly uncomfortable and embarrassed to single me out and discuss my body,” followed by, “In many ways, it felt unfair to both of us.” These are the passengers’ accounts as reported by AOL, not independent findings about how Southwest employees generally apply the policy.
