In March 2024, Dell said fully remote employees would not be considered for promotions or internal role changes under a planned policy taking effect in May. The reported path to career advancement was to reclassify as hybrid onsite. That is a time-specific account, not proof of the promotion rule Dell applies to every employee today: later reporting described a broader office mandate, while public sources do not establish a current, globally uniform eligibility rule or all exceptions.
What Dell told remote employees in March 2024
On March 18, 2024, Ars Technica reported that Dell planned to bar fully remote employees from promotions and internal role changes starting in May. The report said Business Insider had seen an internal memo. As quoted in the coverage, the memo said: “For remote team members, it is important to understand the trade-offs: Career advancement, including applying to new roles in the company, will require a team member to reclassify as hybrid onsite.” Ars Technica’s March 18, 2024 report and Business Insider’s report, hosted by Yahoo provide the reporting; the complete memo is not publicly reproduced there.
Dell confirmed to Ars Technica that hybrid employees would need to be in an approved office for at least 39 days per quarter. The outlet described that as approximately three days per week. The quarterly minimum is the more precise figure; it applies to the hybrid requirement reported in 2024, not necessarily to every later office arrangement.
Dell’s public explanation at the time was: “In today’s global technology revolution, we believe in-person connections paired with a flexible approach are critical to drive innovation and value differentiation.” That states the company’s rationale; it does not independently demonstrate that office attendance improves collaboration or promotion outcomes.

How the reported policy changed in 2025
In January 2025, Dell announced a five-day office expectation for employees who lived near an office, with the change reported as beginning in March. Employees living far from an office could continue working remotely, according to Business Insider coverage hosted by Yahoo. This altered the office-policy context, but does not by itself establish that every remote employee had to commute or that the 2024 promotion restriction remained unchanged.
A June 2025 Business Insider report said enforcement varied by role and manager, based on interviews with 10 Dell employees at US offices. That is evidence of reported employee experience, not a comprehensive published company rule. Neither that reporting nor the earlier announcement settles the precise promotion criteria and exceptions now applied across Dell’s roles and regions.

What Dell’s public policies do—and do not—confirm
Dell’s accessible flexible-work policy describes Connected Workplace arrangements, eligibility, leader approval, and roles that may require onsite work. It is useful context for how Dell describes flexible work, but it does not independently confirm the later restriction on promotions or specify its exceptions.
Dell AS’s FY25 report described a planned five-day office policy for that Norwegian entity. This is country-specific evidence, not confirmation of a global rule. Taken together, public sources document a 2024 reported advancement restriction and subsequent office-policy changes, but do not establish the exact promotion rule currently applicable to every Dell worker.

What a Dell employee should verify before making a decision
Because the public record does not settle an individual employee’s present eligibility, someone weighing a remote arrangement against a career move should get the applicable terms in writing from HR or their manager. Ask specifically:
- Whether the employee’s current classification is fully remote, hybrid, or onsite, and whether a proposed role has different location requirements.
- Whether remote status affects applying for an internal position, promotion consideration, or both.
- What office attendance is required for that role and location, and whether any approved-office or distance exception applies.
- When a classification change would take effect and whether it changes eligibility for a particular opening.
These questions distinguish the reported 2024 policy from an employee’s current, role-specific terms; the answer should come from current internal guidance rather than an assumption based on older public coverage.

Why older comments do not settle today’s policy
In the March 2024 article, Ars Technica also cited a September 2022 LinkedIn post in which Michael Dell said 90 percent of team members reported having an opportunity to develop and learn new skills. That was a company-reported perception result, not an independently audited measure of promotion outcomes. The article also quoted his earlier criticism of forced office attendance: “If you are counting on forced hours spent in a traditional office to create collaboration and provide a feeling of belonging within your organization, you’re doing it wrong.” Those earlier remarks provide context, but neither establishes Dell’s current promotion policy.
