What Marathe said about the expansion
Marathe’s February 2025 update outlined a possible first phase taking Elland Road to around 47,000 seats, followed by a later phase to around 53,000. The reported comments framed the challenge as increasing capacity while preserving the qualities supporters associate with the ground. Leeds All Over reported him saying: “Of paramount importance is to keep the cauldron and electricity of the stadium the same as it is today.” The report also attributed the phrase “a hurricane of noise” to him. What has changed since that update
On 8 January 2026, Leeds United announced that Leeds City Council had granted planning permission for expansion to a capacity of up to 53,000. The club described the approved scope as expansion of the West and North Stands, with targeted alterations to the South Stand. Leeds United’s planning-permission announcement.
The phases Marathe discussed in 2025 should therefore be understood as an earlier outline, not the latest planning milestone. The 2026 announcement confirms permission for the project’s stated capacity; it does not establish that the finished stadium will already have that capacity.

The club’s September 2024 announcement had already set out an ambition to expand to about 53,000 through a phased project, with improved general admission and hospitality facilities. It also stated a goal of retaining as much capacity as possible during construction. Leeds United, 23 September 2024.
Keeping Elland Road open and protecting its atmosphere
Leeds United said in January 2026 that Elland Road would remain open during the expansion. The club said enabling works would begin immediately and that major construction was scheduled to start after the 2025–26 season. Those are the club’s announced plans; the available information does not establish the project’s on-site status or whether the schedule has changed as of October 2026.

The club said the plans aim to improve seating comfort, sightlines, concourses, hospitality and accessibility while preserving the ground’s atmosphere and acoustics. These are stated design aims, not measured results. No independent published statistic establishes how a larger capacity would affect crowd-noise levels, so “a hurricane of noise” is best read as a description of the atmosphere Marathe wants to retain, not a guaranteed acoustic outcome.
