Yes—a broken Rolex may still have value, but there is no reliable universal price. The amount depends on the exact reference, confirmed authenticity, damage, completeness and current demand. Before deciding whether to repair or sell it, get a professional assessment and written repair estimate, then compare those costs with a current valuation for the same watch in a comparable condition.
What determines whether a broken Rolex has value?
A watch that does not run is not automatically worthless, but the Rolex name alone cannot establish what a particular example is worth. A buyer or appraiser needs to know what the watch is, whether it is authentic, what is damaged and which components are present.
- Reference and material: Identify the model and reference number if possible. Different references and materials can have different markets.
- Authenticity and originality: Rolex says, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Do not treat a presumed model or original components as confirmed until the watch has been assessed.
- Damage and function: Record whether it runs, stops, has visible damage or has missing parts. A diagnosis matters more than the broad label “broken.”
- Completeness and history: Note whether the bracelet, box, papers and service records are present. Historical or personal significance may also matter, especially for vintage watches.
Rolex’s official service information does not publish an average broken-watch resale price, a percentage of broken watches that retain value, or a typical repair-to-resale ratio. Any dollar figure would need to be tied to the specific reference and condition, with current market evidence.
How to decide whether to repair or sell it as-is
- Document what you have. Photograph the watch and note its reference if known, visible damage, whether it runs, missing parts and accompanying documentation. Avoid presenting uncertain details as verified.
- Request an assessment and written estimate. Ask a Rolex Official Jeweler or Service Center about service, or consult a qualified watchmaker. Rolex says its watchmaker examines the watch and prepares an estimate; work begins after the owner approves it. The quoted cost depends on the service required and the watch’s condition.
- Get a separate, current resale valuation. Compare the estimate with indications for the same reference and similar damage, completeness and authenticity. A valuation for a working example is not a like-for-like comparison with a broken one.
- Make the choice using the net outcome and your priorities. Consider the expected sale proceeds after repair costs, the time involved, uncertainty in the valuation and any personal or historical significance. Do not assume service will increase resale value or that replacing original parts is always best for a vintage collectible.
Rolex describes its service process as examination, an estimate for approval, dismantling and inspection, replacement of parts that no longer meet its requirements, testing, and a two-year international service guarantee covering replacement parts and labour after service in a Rolex World Service workshop. Ask what work and guarantee apply to the proposed service before approving it.

What Rolex says about service time, cost and older watches
- Cost: Rolex does not list a universal repair price. Its FAQ says, “The cost will depend on the type of servicing required and the state of the watch”; the estimate follows examination.
- Turnaround: Rolex says a complete overhaul takes a minimum of four to six weeks, depending on the watch’s condition. That estimate is for a complete overhaul, not necessarily every repair.
- Routine maintenance: Rolex generally recommends periodic servicing approximately every 10 years, depending on model and real-life usage. This is routine guidance, not a rule for how quickly a damaged watch must be repaired.
- Older models: Rolex says parts and labour are assured for at least 35 years after a model leaves its catalogue. After that, unavailable parts may be recreated by its Restoration Atelier. This does not establish the cost of a particular repair or the watch’s resale value.
Is Rolex Certified Pre-Owned a valuation option?
No. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned concerns qualifying second-hand watches offered by participating Official Jewelers after authentication and service. Rolex does not say that a broken watch qualifies, and the program does not provide a general valuation for broken examples. It should not be treated as evidence of what a damaged watch will sell for.

Use the official Rolex watch care and service information to understand the process and find service guidance. For a sale decision, obtain a current assessment specific to the reference and condition; do not rely on estimates for a different model or a fully working watch.
