Tim Sherwood hopes Sheffield Wednesday can eventually return to the Premier League, but he is describing a personal aspiration—not announcing a club target. His remarks came after the takeover by David Storch and the Arise Capital Partners consortium, completed in May 2026. In the near term, Wednesday’s task is to rebuild in League One.
What Tim Sherwood said about Sheffield Wednesday
In an interview reported exclusively by The72 on 26 September 2026, Sherwood said: “I certainly want to see Sheffield Wednesday higher up and back in the top flight eventually. I made my debut there.” The former Wednesday player and manager, now a Sky Sports pundit, connected that hope to his own experience at the club.

He also recalled the atmosphere and the standard of opposition: “I remember going there and that crowd and that team you had to play against, incredible players there. If you had the opportunity to spend the money, if you had it, to pile it into that club, that is a huge football club and should be a Premier League club.” His comments about investment are conditional; they do not establish that the new owners have pledged a particular amount.
What the takeover changed—and what it did not
Sky Sports reported on 3 May 2026 that US businessman David Storch and the Arise Capital Partners consortium had completed the takeover. Storch said: “Sheffield Wednesday deserves stability, ambition and a clear direction. That is what we are here to deliver.”

The same report said the EFL waived an additional 15-point deduction and that Wednesday would remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons, signing players under an agreed business plan. Those were the reported terms at the time of the takeover; they should not be read as a guarantee that the arrangements will remain unchanged indefinitely or as evidence of unrestricted spending.
Why the Premier League is a long-term ambition
The72’s 26 September report described Wednesday as a League One club after relegation and administration during the 2025/26 season. It cast an immediate return to the Championship as the nearer-term goal, with a return to the Premier League a much longer-range hope. Sherwood’s view is not a confirmed club objective or a forecast that promotion will happen.

Storch’s statement sets out a broad promise of stability, ambition and direction, while the takeover report describes the EFL’s budget conditions. Neither establishes a specific promotion timetable or a commitment to spend a particular sum. Sherwood’s remarks are best understood as an endorsement of Wednesday’s potential, rooted in his connection to the club, rather than confirmation of the owners’ plans.
