On 13 September 2024, Reading head coach Ruben Selles said he expected the proposed takeover to happen, but stressed that he did not know when. The sale had not been completed: prospective buyer Rob Couhig and owner Dai Yongge were still negotiating, according to BBC Sport.
What did Ruben Selles say about the takeover?
Selles told BBC Sport: “I expected the takeover to be done two months ago.” He added: “I want it to happen and everything inside indicates to me that it will happen but how long will it take? I don’t know.”
His remarks expressed hope and a belief that the deal would proceed, alongside clear uncertainty about timing. They were not confirmation that the parties had agreed or completed a sale.
What was the deal’s status on 13 September 2024?
BBC Sport reported that Couhig and Yongge were still negotiating. Selles’s comments came while the proposed transaction remained incomplete; his expectation that it would happen should not be confused with an announcement that it had happened.

What happened to Reading FC’s ownership after the comments?
The later record gives important context, but it describes separate moments in the ownership story:
- September 2023: A petition statement reproduced in the House of Commons said the Dais had expressed openness to selling Reading. The same petition text, recorded in a Commons debate on 10 March 2025, said no sale or commitment had yet taken place at that point. UK Parliament Hansard, 10 March 2025.
- By the May bank holiday weekend of 2025: In a Commons debate on 8 July 2025, a Reading MP said the club had been sold by then. UK Parliament Hansard, 8 July 2025.
That later parliamentary statement establishes that a sale had gone through by the stated 2025 date. It does not establish that the eventual sale was the same transaction Selles discussed in 2024.
