Elon Musk’s tariff dispute with Peter Navarro was a public disagreement over trade policy, not proof that Musk had broken permanently with Donald Trump. In an April 7, 2025 report, Futurism said Musk attacked Navarro’s defense of tariffs and his academic credentials, while advocating zero tariffs and a U.S.–Europe free-trade zone. Navarro countered that Musk was defending his car business. The reporting did not establish how much the tariffs would affect Tesla or whether the exchange marked a lasting political rupture.
What Musk said about Navarro and tariffs
After Trump announced a sweeping tariff package, Musk publicly criticized Navarro, then a senior adviser on trade and manufacturing. Futurism reported Musk’s remarks as: “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing.” He followed with: “Results in the ego/brains>>1 problem.” The quotations are attributed here to Futurism’s account; the outlet’s linked X post was not independently accessible for verification.
Musk also argued for freer trade. Speaking by video to Italy’s Lega party, he called for a “zero-tariff situation” and a free-trade zone between Europe and the United States. Futurism quoted him saying: “If people wish to work in Europe or wish to work in North America, they should be allowed to do so, in my view.”
How Navarro responded
Navarro said Musk’s position reflected his business interests. Business Insider quoted him: “Look, Elon, when he’s in his DOGE lane, he’s great. But we understand what’s going on here. We just have to understand. Elon sells cars.” Navarro also said there was no rift between them.
#1 Best Overall
In another interview, Navarro characterized Tesla as a car assembler and pointed to its internationally sourced components. That was Navarro’s argument in the dispute; the reports do not quantify Tesla’s sourcing or establish the size of any tariff-related cost to the company.
What the tariff announcement meant at the time
Business Insider reported on April 7, 2025, that Trump’s announcement covered more than 180 countries and set a 10% baseline tariff rate. Those figures describe the announcement as reported at that time, not current tariff rates. The public clash followed that announcement and pitted Musk’s call for zero tariffs and freer movement of workers against Navarro’s defense of Trump’s tariff strategy.
Why Tesla’s interests entered the argument
The exchange linked a policy debate to an obvious business question: how tariffs might affect a car company that sources components internationally. Navarro used Tesla’s business model to suggest Musk had a commercial reason to oppose tariffs. The reporting supports describing international sourcing as part of the argument, but it does not provide a verified estimate of tariff effects on Tesla’s costs, sales, or share price. Any claim that the tariffs produced a specific business outcome would go beyond what these reports establish.

Not on the evidence in these reports. “Breaks rank” captures the visible disagreement between political allies over tariffs; it does not establish that Musk and Trump had ended their alliance. Futurism treated the relationship’s future as an open question, while Navarro explicitly denied a rift between himself and Musk.
