Kittredge II, who founded Yankee Candle, died at age 67 on July 24, 2019, after a brief illness, The Boston Globe reported, citing a family statement. The family did not disclose details of the illness.
From a homemade candle to Yankee Candle
Yankee Candle dates its beginnings to Christmas 1969. In the company’s account, 16-year-old Kittredge made a candle from melted crayons for his mother. A neighbor wanted one, too; Kittredge sold it and used the money to buy wax.
The company says he began designing and handcrafting candles in his family’s kitchen the following year, then opened a small shop with help from his father. Employees moved to an old paper mill in Holyoke in 1973. Yankee Candle’s first scented apothecary jars arrived in 1974, according to its company history.
