Dated announcements connect Richelieu Dennis to both companies in different ways: Essence Ventures announced its acquisition of Essence Communications in 2018, while Unilever announced an agreement to acquire Sundial Brands in 2017. Those records do not establish that Dennis currently owns both businesses.
What the dated records say
| Business | Documented event | Dennis’s documented role |
|---|---|---|
| Essence Communications and the ESSENCE brand | On January 3, 2018, ESSENCE announced that Essence Communications was under new ownership by Essence Ventures LLC, which it described as an independent African-American-owned company. | ESSENCE’s 2018 coverage of the New Voices Fund launch identified Dennis as CEO of Essence Ventures. It described the ESSENCE brand as having returned to 100% Black ownership at that time. |
| Sundial Brands | On November 27, 2017, Unilever announced an agreement to acquire Sundial Brands. | Unilever’s announcement identified Dennis as Sundial’s founder and CEO at the time of the transaction announcement. |
The difference matters: a founder or executive role at the time of a transaction is not the same as current ownership. Nor does a dated description of Essence’s ownership establish its present ownership structure.
What the Sundial transaction covered
Unilever’s 2017 announcement described Sundial as a hair- and skin-care company founded in 1991 and listed SheaMoisture, Nubian Heritage, Madam C.J. Walker, and nyakio among its brands. The announcement establishes the agreement to acquire Sundial; it does not establish Dennis’s current ownership or role.
What is known about the Essence relationship
ESSENCE’s January 2018 announcement named Essence Ventures LLC as the new owner of Essence Communications. In its 2018 New Voices Fund launch coverage, ESSENCE identified Dennis as Essence Ventures’ CEO and described the ESSENCE brand as having returned to 100% Black ownership. That is a report about the period, not a current ownership breakdown.
#1 Best Overall
The same 2018 coverage reported the New Voices Fund’s launch amount as $100 million. That figure describes the reported launch, not the fund’s current assets or balance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “owner of both” is not a verified current claim
The records support a historical connection to each business, but they do not provide a current beneficial-ownership breakdown or confirm present operating control of Essence Ventures, Essence Communications, or Sundial Brands. It would therefore be inaccurate to present Dennis as the verified current owner of both companies on the strength of these dated announcements alone.
In connection with Unilever’s 2017 transaction announcement, Dennis said he wanted Sundial to inspire other minority-owned companies by showing that a business could achieve excellence, create social impact, and succeed on a world stage. That statement expresses his view at the time; it is not evidence of current ownership.
