Good Housekeeping’s September 30, 2026 guide names eight mattresses for children and teens, based on its own lab evaluation and at-home consumer testing. Those are Good Housekeeping’s findings—not tests by The Finance Base or our readers’ children. Use the shortlist to compare design and fit, then verify current specifications, price and return terms with the manufacturer before buying.
Eight kids’ mattresses named in Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guide
The categories and product details below reflect Good Housekeeping’s guide, which says its Textiles Lab evaluated materials, features and prices and gathered feedback from at-home consumer testers using the mattresses with their children. It reports testing more than 20 models. The category labels are that publisher’s editorial judgments, not clinical rankings.
| Good Housekeeping category | Mattress | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Saatva Youth Mattress | Two-sided design described as firmer for ages 3–7 and softer for ages 8–12; 10-inch profile. Check clearance for a bunk or trundle. The guide reported a 365-day trial and a $99 return fee when checked; confirm current terms. |
| Best value | Brooklyn Bedding Kids Mattress | Foam construction, 6-inch profile and a spill- and stain-resistant cover. The guide says it suits many bunks and trundles, but it cannot be flipped. Its listed price may change. |
| Best organic | Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress | 7-inch latex-and-coil hybrid, available in Twin, Twin XL and Full, with organic-material certifications described by the guide. It is not flippable. |
| Best waterproof | Helix Kids Mattress | Two-sided coil-and-foam design with a waterproof lining; 8-inch profile, Twin and Full sizes. The guide describes a firmer side for ages 3–7 and a softer side for ages 8–12. |
| Most versatile | My Green Mattress Kiwi Organic Mattress | Not designed specifically for children, but the guide highlights zoned pocketed coils, an 8-inch profile and seven sizes from Twin to California King as reasons it may suit older children, teens and young adults. |
| Best for bunk beds | Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids Mattress | The guide reports a 6-inch trundle version and 7-inch Twin and Full versions. One side is waterproof and the other quilted. Check the exact bed’s mattress-height and guardrail requirements. |
| Best flippable | Birch Kids Natural Mattress | Reversible design with firmer and plusher sides described for different age bands; 8-inch profile in Twin and Full. The guide reports GREENGUARD certification. |
| Best for pressure relief | Nolah Nurture Kids Mattress | More cushioning than the firmer picks, with foam, individually wrapped coils and handles, according to the guide. Some testers reported an initial odor. A WIRED tester found the Twin too short for one particular frame, so measure your own setup. |
These are not interchangeable products: profile, size availability, cover protection, reversibility, construction and return conditions may matter more to a particular family than a category award. See Good Housekeeping’s 2026 kids’ mattress guide for its testing descriptions and product listings.
How to choose based on the bed and the child
Measure the frame and check height limits first
Confirm the mattress dimensions and profile against the bed manufacturer’s specifications before comparing comfort features. This is especially important for bunk beds and trundles: a mattress that is too tall can affect guardrail coverage, while a mattress that is too short or narrow can leave a gap. A low profile can help with clearance, but the bed’s stated limits—not a general rule—determine fit. WIRED’s report of a Twin mattress leaving an 8-inch gap in one tester’s frame is a frame-specific experience, not proof of a universal sizing problem.
#1 Best Overall
- Waterproof & Air Permeable Protection This twin mattress protector features a leak-proof TPU backing to shield your mattress from spills, sweat and all liquid stains, effectively extending your mattress service life. The silent waterproof barrier enables proper air circulation and heat dissipation to maintain a dry, comfortable sleeping surface all night long.
- Silent & Luxuriously Soft Feel Crafted with plush terry fabric top for outstanding softness and ventilation. Our premium flexible elastic TPU waterproof layer eliminates crinkling and plastic rustling noises, delivering quiet undisturbed rest unlike noisy generic mattress covers.
- Stretch Deep Pocket Fit Constructed with highly stretchable mesh fabric skirt, this cover easily fits mattresses with heights ranging from 14 to 18 inches, compatible with most standard twin size mattresses.
- Full Surround Elastic Secure Fit 360° continuous elastic band wraps around the entire mattress for full top and side coverage. The tight secure fit stays in place during sleep, and the flexible design allows simple removal for convenient washing.
- Versatile Household Essential This fitted mattress pad creates a cozy, clean sleeping space for all household users. It works well for daily home use and offers reliable liquid protection for everyday living scenarios.
Do not assume that every Twin mattress fits every Twin frame perfectly. Check the frame’s usable interior dimensions and the mattress maker’s dimensions, and look for a snug fit without unsafe gaps.
Choose construction for practical tradeoffs, not a blanket “best” type
- Foam: Often easier to move. The Brooklyn Bedding Kids is a 6-inch foam option, while its cover is described as spill- and stain-resistant rather than waterproof.
- Hybrid: Combines foam with coils. The reviewed guides discuss airflow and edge support as possible advantages, but construction alone does not establish that a mattress will sleep cooler or suit every child.
- Reversible: Can offer two surfaces in one mattress. Saatva Youth, Helix Kids and Birch Kids Natural are described as having different firmness levels by side. Treat age-band descriptions as product design guidance, not a medical prescription; some Helix testers did not notice a large comfort difference between sides.
Distinguish waterproof from water-resistant
Built-in waterproof lining, a water-resistant cover, and a spill- or stain-resistant treatment are different claims. The guide describes Helix and one side of the Naturepedic 2-in-1 as waterproof, and the Brooklyn Bedding cover as spill- and stain-resistant. If the mattress does not provide the protection you want, a separately purchased, correctly sized protector is an option; the reviewed sources did not test a particular protector.

Match features to the likely years of use
A two-sided mattress may be useful if the child’s preferences change, but it does not guarantee that a single mattress will remain appropriate through adolescence. Consider the child’s current size, bed dimensions, available replacement budget, and whether the model offers a size that will still work as the child grows. The Kiwi’s broader size range may be relevant for a teen or young adult, while the Saatva Youth and Helix Kids are explicitly described with child age bands.
What mattress certifications do—and do not—tell you
Certification names refer to particular standards or materials; they are not a blanket declaration that every component of a finished mattress is chemical-free, risk-free or medically superior. The reviewed guides mention CertiPUR-US for certain polyurethane foams, GREENGUARD for emissions-related testing, GOTS for organic textiles and GOLS for latex. Check the actual product’s certification and which component it covers rather than relying on a general “certified” label.

- KEEP YOUR MATTRESS DRY - Helps protect against fluids, urine, perspiration and anything else that might stain your mattress!
- QUIET & BREATHABLE - Quiet breathable twin mattress protector that will allow a full night sleep while protecting your mattress
- PROTECT YOUR MATTRESS - Perfectly fitted twin mattress cover that protects against unwanted creatures
- BEDDING ESSENTIALS - Airbnb Essentials for Hosts, Essential for first home and/or new apartment
- MACHINE WASHABLE - Machine washable on cold and tumble dry once cleaned
The Avocado guide entry refers to GOTS- and GOLS-related organic material certifications; the Birch entry reports GREENGUARD certification. Those descriptions do not establish that every part of either mattress carries the same certification. For a mattress marketed as organic, read the current product documentation to identify the certified materials.
Firmness advice depends on age
Infant safe-sleep guidance should not be turned into a universal firmness rule for older children. The American Academy of Pediatrics says, for infants, “Use a crib, bassinet or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet.” Its recommendations also call for keeping loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers and other soft items out of an infant’s sleep space. These are infant-specific recommendations, not an official firmness prescription for school-age children or teenagers. See the AAP’s safe-sleep guidance.

- Unique Style: Stand out with our classic quilted design. It locks in filling for even support and helps regulate temperature—stylish and practical
- 100% Waterproof: Don't stress over spills or accidents. The upgraded TPU layer fully blocks liquids, offering reliable protection for all
- Ultra-Soft & Noiseless: Experience luxuriously soft, breathable comfort. The noiseless twin waterproof mattress protector fabric ensures peaceful sleep, even when you move
- Deep Pocket Fit: The 360° elastic skirt fits mattresses up to 18" deep for a secure, slip-free fit all night long
- Easy to Clean: Machine washable and dirt-resistant. For best results, tumble dry on low—no ironing or bleaching needed
WIRED says strong research and official guidance establishing one ideal firmness for older children are limited. A mattress label assigning a firmer side to one age band and a softer side to another is therefore a product description, not proof that every child in those age ranges needs that firmness. Consider fit, comfort and the child’s needs rather than treating a category or age label as medical advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Crib mattresses have separate U.S. requirements
Crib mattresses are not simply smaller versions of Twin or Full mattresses. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s guidance distinguishes crib and play-yard mattresses from ordinary children’s beds. For crib mattresses manufactured after May 3, 2026, it lists ASTM F2933-25 with modifications; for those manufactured from August 15, 2022, through May 3, 2026, it lists ASTM F2933-21 with modifications. CPSC says manufacturers and importers must certify compliance in a Children’s Product Certificate citing 16 CFR part 1241. These rules should not be generalized to standard kids’ beds. See the CPSC crib-mattress business guidance.

Check the details that can change before ordering
- Verify current sizes, dimensions and mattress height on the product page.
- For a bunk or trundle, compare the exact model’s height with the bed maker’s limits and guardrail instructions.
- Confirm the current trial period, return fee, delivery terms and any exclusions; Good Housekeeping’s stated Saatva terms were reported at the time of its guide, not guaranteed future terms.
- Read the current cover description carefully: waterproof, water-resistant and stain-resistant do not mean the same thing.
- Review certification documentation for the covered material or component.
